About to trade in my 1994 540i E34 - what is a reasonable value?
Bandit replied to larry26's topic in General Discussion
We have owned BMW's since 1976 in New Zealand (And the UK) and must say that we have enjoyed exemplary service from the BMW main dealer network, including Jerry Clayton in Takapuna, McMillian BMW in Auckland, Coombes Johnston in Hamilton and Christchurch BMW. The owner have substantial investment in their business and the brand, and deserve support from posters on this forum not the continual "slagging off" that happens far too often Showing our age here, aware that most of the outlets named above have been rebranded, but you get the drift surely?đ -
Yes OP6 and I knew the owner very well. Its all very sad really. He died a horrible death about 2018 and his affairs were in a frightful mess.
-
@LeonF correct, that is the sister car to the silver one. @driftit, both cars were LHD, as was the 3.0 coupe donor car for the body and suspension bits. The owner certainly did the conversions correctly. all the bits were available then more quickly than they are now. There is quite a bit more info, not all of it good but as the car is still for sale I'm gonna zip my lips. Most unlike me âšī¸ Actually thought the current owner had sold it. Coming back to this having read the listing. All the statements the owner makes on the listing are false. The history of the cars and the ensuing saga is common knowledge among M coupe owners here in NZ. I knew one of the cars was flagged on import and the blue one was it. How some of the unrealistic sellers of interesting cars can sleep at night I just don't know. Ignorance is no excuse . .
-
"Written off" is not the terminology in use today. It is flagged as "damaged" on import or at border inspection. The silver car discussed above, FHQ678 seems free of any notations checking Carjam but we certainly didn't pay the fee for a full report. The estoril car was registered in 2002 or 3 after the repair and steering change, all the suspension dash etc came from BMW, the two cars were completed almost side by side. The silver car and the tub were pushed aside and the owner enjoyed it for about a year, then lost interest and moved onto other things, like 1930's Ford V8's.

Actually the importer was a true collector / hoarder. Crikey he had well north of a hundred cars. He was a smart fellow too, one of the first guys to recognise automotive accessories could be a lucrative business, , he chose to specialise in wheels and tyres. Deceased now, his memory lives on in the Mag n Turbo brand. It was around 2001-2 ish, from memory, he imported all 3 and put the estoril car together first, switching to RHD. The damaged Z3 coupe tub, and parts thereoff, and the damaged silver car hung around for ages, sale proof until migrating to the City of Fails and Chancers around 2008 or 9.

There is a real story behind this silver car, and an estoril one, recently for sale in Christchurch. At $90k a bargain. Apparently. There was also a Z3 3 litre shell, all 3 LHD imported together about ohhh (idly scratching my kardashian whilst gently ruminating) about 2002. From the three bitzers emerged the silver car and the estoril car in RHD. As to worth being $100k, evidently not. đ

Is This Where The E30 Market Is Now..?
Bandit replied to E30 325i Rag-Top's topic in TradeMe discussions
Ahh, si, Manuel from Espana. -
I'll play. Similar to a cardigan, overlarge with leather elbows. Usually dark blue, green or burgundy. Three overlarge buttons to the front. Shaggy wool construction, extremely warm and comfortable to wear. Slight dribble marks and some serious stain evidence to lower left front. Comes with a characteristic odour of old engine oil with a suggestion of WD40, and slight overlay of aged cask whisky or bourbon. Best removed before the aged aunt or grandmother visits as it may create an offence, causing the wearer to be written out of the will.

Unfortunately quite a few Christchurch BMW owners are not FB cognisant Gaz....

Because it's not a re-shell of an M325i into a 318i shell with the appropriate LVVTA plate, it's a concerted attempt to hide and obfuscate the cars history Sorry don't see any concerted attempt to hide and obfuscate the cars history at all. Both the seller, and a previous owner posting in the imgur link above are quite upfront and open about this car having been reshelled. There no suggestion at all to alleged "Ringing" Neil whatsoever. There is probably 3 or 400 Falcon Gt's, Holden Monaro's various Lotus Porsches Austin Healey's and dare I suggest several BMW E30 and E36 M3's on the road today in NZ that have been reshelled as this car might have been. And like this 325 they are registered and carry current WOF's The car is for sale on the open market, warts and all. As Leon F says above, caveat emptor, buyer beware. Given the reshell may have taken place some considerable time ago, before the sellers ownership, lets let the guy get on with his auction. -

TBH not quite sure what all the fuss is about with this car. All the Lotus Cortina's and Ford Escorts that enjoyed successful race careers and probably 80% of the road cars here in NZ have all been rebodied, yet carry the original tags. Same with other brands too, Alfa Romeo, Austin Healey Jaguar and Porsche. Has it affected the values? Not one jot. Lets face it, none of the high km multi owner 325 MTech 1 or 2's will ever be collector cars, and this car falls into this category too, this is just the car for an enthusiast to acquire, and put his personal stamp on, as Sammo is doing with his. The seller is not trying to hide anything, and is making the sale as transparent as he can do, and kudos to him. $1 reserve, its on the market, put up or shut up đ -

Just like to point out a) Today $40k ish is the market value for an E46 M3 and b) until a sale occurs lets forget about a potential 20k return on his investment, as, it is yet to be earned đ Could be, one blink and you have missed it Twistee...........

Is This Where The E30 Market Is Now..?
Bandit replied to E30 325i Rag-Top's topic in TradeMe discussions
Expensive way to buy a car. Hammer price plus 15% plus GST on the 15% đ¯ Most of the cars in Webbs current catalogue have been exposed to the marketplace for some time. Plus a few re-runs too. -
Either/ or, when we bought the car in 2011 it had a promptly removed chrome buttoned Blaupunkt Modena fitted. Need something more kosher to fill the hole really. Never have the radio or stereo on anyway whilst driving. Thanks for the reply Dave

Given the amount of your "hard earned" invested in your project Sammo, you have to say what you have posted. đ -

Bandit replied to E30 325i Rag-Top's topic in TradeMe discussions
There is a tremendous difference with all this hyperbole around "asking" price, "market" price, and nett received price. From memory the last 325MTech 2 to sell for strong money was the white coupe that hung around Auckland for ages ohh 18 months or two years ago, went down into the South Island, then came back up to Auckland, sold for the buy now $35k. And there was a lovely red Mtech2 in the Wellington region, low kms, owners and largely original sold for quite strong money, may have been just over 50k, think this car started all the chatter, and there was a cosmos black or delphin gray car too. Subsequent cars marketed on TradeMe are / have all fallen short of the sellers expectations, a classic example is the largely original 2 or three owner MTech 1 in silver that has sat at Arrow Toys for nearly a year, and slid in asking from $69990 down to $48950, still unsold. Of course there may be cars changing hands off market, we rarely hear about these. In the writers opinion the E30 is just not in 2022 worth anywhere the money that some of the posters above believe is "fair" market value. Within the BMW brand there are three or four models that, by comparison to the E30, give far more "bang" for your motoring buck. When I was growing up way down south, a well worn family saying, always directed to me because of my proliferate ways, (especially concerning fast cars) " A fool and his money are soon parted" And when I gaze at a E30 325i on the market at more than $20k, this always springs to mind đ Discuss..... -
