Tony is familiar with both...

Bored texting girl come with it?

Sounds plausible. Might give it a whirl. Good thinking, Scott! Let me know how the trial goes... But bear in mind that 2 tonnes of E31 needs a lot room to 'coast to a halt'!

A young guy with a cap on backwards screamed into a park outside our house in this at the weekend... and missed: If you're a member, it's a nice car. Sh*t parking though (although not quite as sh*t as the courier who drove over the 'berm')

So I need to resync the dk motors (electronic throttle bodies). In order to do this the 850i repair manual says: Step 1 - Run engine to operating temperature Step 2 - In 1st gear run the engine up to 5000 rpm and then let it coast down (still in 1st) down to idle and let it idle for 10 seconds Step 3 - Do Step 2 two more times for a total of three times Step 4 - Place the car in neutral or park Step 5 - Idle for at least 5 minutes Step 6 - Shut the engine off for 10 seconds Step 7 - Restart the engine Result: Both DK motors should now be synchronized and the adaptive system engaged Can anyone recommend a stretch of road long enough and quite enough to do this near Auckland? Or maybe they'll let me try it on the dyno on Sat morning?

Good idea, I'll be able to afford the conversion by Xmas.

Insurance happy with it though. As always cars are worth what people will pay for them. -
Goal will always be to fit the S62 and manual but that could be some time away so I'd like the V12 running as it should in the meantime.

Redbook says they're worth: $21.5K as new $20.3K in v good condition $18.5K in good condition $14.5K in average condition $11.7K in fair condition $9.5K in poor condition James' reserve isn't that far out and I know he'd let it go for less. There are certainly others listed that are asking too much. -
Had a spare 30 mins this afternoon so thought I'd replace the O2 sensors... Unfortunately didn't bank on a sensor that was just about welded in and I couldn't get it to budge with limited space under the car before I ran out of time. Interestingly, the performance again has taken a great leap with just one of the sensors replaced (admittedly on the side running super-rich - cylinders 7-12). Idling better and throttle response is greatly improved. Can't wait to see what happens when I can get the other sensor out. So nice to feel the car improving incrementally but doing each bit of maintenance one at at time... It'll be fantastic when it's all done.

As Martin says, intake manifold gasket is an easy fix but definitely do a smoke test first as the leak could be from a number of other places and you don't want to throw cash at parts until you know exactly what's wrong. Could also be PCV for example. Good write up on symptoms and tests for PCV here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=534005

Ha! Didn't check... One seemed to be pretty blocked.

Replaced the fuel filters this arvo and the difference was night and day. Idle improved, fuel consumption improved and the smell of unburnt fuel seems to be less. Didn't get a chance to drive it for long but it definitely seemed significantly better.

All the usuals: plugs, coils, vac leaks, etc. Would be good to identify which cylinder/s are misfiring as it will help pinpoint the issue. I had a big leak from a worn intake manifold gasket on my 540. Completely eliminated rough idle when replaced. Ray did double vanos for me too which helped immeasurably but yours don't sound like bad vanos symptoms. I'd start by unplugging coil packs to see if any are at fault... If you unplug one and it makes no difference to idle it's probably bad. Think I've got a spare pack you can have if needed and have a full set of new plugs should you decide to replace. Sort the rough idle and see if gearing issue goes away.

Schmiedmann used to sell them but can't see it on their website currently. I think the plus side is you don't get the ugly "GTR" vents and fitment will be perfect because you're fitting to your OE bonnet not an aftermarket CF one. Probably a fair bit cheaper. I seem to remember they dome and vent was about $300 + shipping from Schmiedmann. I thought about it for my E39 but decided it was a bit OTT but for your project, perfect!

You might as well go all out with the ute and get a power dome for the bonnet too:

Tyres are sold. Also have 8 brand new NGK Iridium BKR6EIX spark plugs - recommended and quality upgrade to M62TUB44 plugs (amongst probably a lot of other applications). $75 for four or $140 for all 8 (RRP is around $30 ea). Also have a virtually new set of 12 x NGK 3741 Spark Plug - Laser Platinum - bought them as recommended for the M70 only to discover it doesn't like platinum plugs. They were installed for 6-7 days only. As a result, they're yours for $25 a pack (of 4) or $80 if you take the lot. OP updated.

2.25" inner diameter should be perfect.

Perhaps I'd spend some of it on one of these... http://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/photos/10304938/Meet-the-fully-operational-Darth-Vader-car

Yep, you're bang on as far as I can tell, Will. Two engines stuck together. Twice the problems but neither particularly complicated. I was going on the advice of BM Workshop who said they didn't think it was worth doing anything else (even compression and smoke tests) until the diagnostics were functioning properly. Josh and I will have a crack at it this weekend... If we can get it down his drive.
