was it overheated while moving very slowly ?? could be the viscous fan not working properly. or a failing thermostat (staying shut) or water pump empellor spining on the shaft also check for coolant leaks , around water pump , hoses , radiator and coolant tank and any plastic coolant pipes and fittings i would suggest you get all these things checked/replaced and dont drive it some info here

spray some engine start or crc etc down the intake and see if it fires on that. check if you have 12volts at the fuel pump when cranking. you could put 12volts there and see if the pump runs and fuel coming out at the fuel rail etc
-
the fuse link wont effect the starter.i would say you just have a faulty starter motor , they do fail every now then .
-
also check your engine temp sensor , if broiken , not connected or faulty resistance readings. if its not working it will over fuel your engine , causing black smoke etc
-
i have researched this , and it requires many mods to make a bmw v8 fit you will need a gearbox from a bmw v8 to suit the bmw v8 , or get some other gearbox adapated etc. requires custom mounts , custom sump and oil pump , pick up etc. custom headers , exhaust etc alpina did the B8 with a 4.6l v8 . also hartge did a 5l v8 conversion . just google "bmw e36 v8" plenty of info

coils are very reliable so i dought that , normally they will have no spark when there is no signal from teh crank shaft sensor , so you need to check that first . also check the wiring and plugs from the sensor all teh way back to the ecu . dry solder joints in the ecu or cooked ecu. faulty or intermitant ecu relay or alarm wiring etc. check the dizzy and rotor if rotor has cracked fallen off inside etc .
