  1. If you fancy a bit of reading http://www.motoiq.com/tech/the_ultimate_gu...n_handling.aspx
  2. No it would not be worthwhile. The chip you are buying has a generic tune on it. Chips can be good value for money but it is a bit of a gamble. This is because the tune isn't based off what your engine wants. Being that the tune is also for an m20 hopefully it will be close To get 12-15hp you'd be advancing the timing towards and possibly leaning it out towards the dangerous edge. I'm assuming m20's aren't still making power at 500rpm above the original rev limit Getting a chip tuned especially for your engine will give your engine what it wants. But comes at a price My opinion is to do everything you can that will change the volumetric efficiency(headers, cams) then go for a tune. +1 for crunchy being a great asset to the forum. Was a bit gutted that your e34 turbo build has vanished.
  3. There has been a bit of e36's on the forum so thought i'd better try keep up Cars been stuck at tec. Luckily i've got the engine wiring to hack up and attach to the link loom. The current state of that is less then exciting. On Monday some mates and I pulled apart the m50b25. Original plan was to just take off the head and give it a clean up while I have access to the tools at tec. Everything came apart way too easy so we continued. Here is a video of it all unfolding Will get more of the important photos up. This will be an experimental engine. As a result things might be a little dodgy I have a rotating assembly from an m54b30 that i'd like to put in it. I will get new big end and main bearings. Now comes the dodgy part. New rings are going to set me back $93 US each set. And I wont be paying that much http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/smart/...20Each%20%20%20 I haven't yet found any other suitable rings for a moderate price. I'd even considered going with forged pistons but that is taking me way away from an experimental motor. So if all measures up ok i think i'll be re-using the m54b30 rings. I'll be pushing my luck as the m50b25 pistons are the same bore as the m54. If that doesn't work i'll be looking into piston options from other cars I've heard a few people mention strokers on here. I'd be grateful to hear any knowledge you have on the subject
  4. Looks good. Would like to see more

    E36 Freshen up

Would be keen for a cap if I can't find an e36/46 housing. The caps are a bit pricey when you add in a thermostat. I have given up on the idea of tapping into the housing. Too many layers in the casting and alternator being in the way was what put me off
  6. I personally skate as much as I can(still no good at it), and know how noisey it is. Especially with wood and metal ramps. Being that it is one day a week I think your fighting a hard arguement. Go fishing/drinking/build junk on friday arvos. Heaps better then giving your money to a lawyer Good luck
  7. If you really need a filter go for a panel filter that slots into the factory slot. You will not get any noticable power from modifications that far from the engine. Anything that has a proper benefit will need a tune to suit it. I'd be spending the money on headers, cam and tune if you want more power. Good luck either way
  8. Getting a loan to modify a car is a stoopid idea. If you have to pay someone to do all the work you aren't going to get much at all for your dollar. Buy tools(there are enough people on here that will give you advise on how to use them) or buy a different car edit: or Jon
  9. With out money you need luck, skill and time If you look up 13's for 1300 you might get some inspiration. Unsure if this is a good recommendation

    E36 Freshen up

Do you still have the viscous fan? What thermostat are you using? If not i'd run it at 80-82. Having the fan in a push setup is going to be less efficient so it'll need all the lead time it can get. Although it might move more air then the factory setup. The air intake is a cool way to do it. Does the mount just bolt on in the factory place? Must be a tight squeez for the headlight Scan tool will show if there is any problem with the injectors. Clutch should be fine after a bit of slow wearing in Sniffer test of the cooling system will make sure that you don't have any head gasket issues. Hopefully it's just condensation and moisture from the air. Mine also threw out a bit of moisture after I finished putting things back together Your car is looking great
  11. I think it was only the 4 channel e36 abs that had the bigger problems. Still not much of a comparison to the e46 m3 setup. Massivebrakes.com might be an option to look at for bbk Good luck with the up coming targa
  12. Would love to see the build progress if you have time to make a thread for it
  13. Cheers. That is the plan. It is an opportunity that I didn't want to miss out on. Who needs friends when you have a coupe anyways
  14. Got the lateral bars nearly done. Luckily I got plenty of advice from the tutor on how much to rotate the bar before bending. Last day of construction tomorrow before a 2 week break. Edit: Sadly the twist wasn't quite right. As a result made the part going down the A pillar stick in towards the windscreen. It was very borderline on if it'd be 70mm inside the window. So decided to re-do the lateral bars.
  15. ouch that's a bit steep This could be an option http://www.bimmersport.co.nz/forums/index....showtopic=36987
  16. Sorry about the really really late reply. I'm not sure if you can change your diff seals without taking the diff out. You probably would be able to. But I sure wouldn't want to try it So a bit of time has passed and not a lot has been achieved. Went to an STM Gymkhana day a few weeks ago. Had a great time even though I lost the lock nut key and had huge understeer problems. Oh and spun when trying to go in a straight line I purchased e36v8's old m50b25. Hoping to one day do some sort of experimental turbo project. Or use the 3 Litre parts I have lying around. Only reason they haven't been used yet is because the price of m54b30 piston rings is a little steep. Also have a getrag 250 in pieces. Please excuse the lack of technical terms here. The springs that hold the synchro rings in place had all snapped between first-second and 2 had snapped between 3-4. Got a hold of Kayne Barrie (great chap) who supplied me with some springs(bmw don't sell the springs seperate) and unloaded a whole heap of usefull information. Will get some bits to make sure it is nicely freshened up. I understand why people pay to get gearboxs fixed Picked up a nearly finished megasquirt for a mates car. That took a dive so now I have both of these. Surely i'll find a use if I hurry up and get into it. And finally, as if I didn't have enough projects on the go at once. Metal for inside the car. The bend in the drivers side looks kinked from the photos. I think it's some tape or something The more difficult bends are coming. In particular the lateral bars. Anyone have any advice on getting the twist right? Bender is a pro tools horizontal bender
  17. Sure is. It's going really well. The course doesn't really deal with 'motorsport' as much as we'd all hoped and we seem to be running out of time coming up to the end. Can't really complain. The course has been well worth the money. How long did it take you to finish yours off?
  18. Stripped interior and started on cage Need to start working out as the hole saw gave me a beat down
  19. you should edit this list I'm know sweet fa about m5x conversions but some changes will be the m3 stuff. Us m3 gear and euro m3 gear are different.
