kiwi535 replied to Fai+H777's topic in Wheels & Tyres

Calling Christchurch Bimmersporters.I would love it if one of you guys could go and have a look at the 540 six speed on trademe at the moment. Even better if you have had some e39 experience.I dont need you to make an exhaustive check, but need someone to tell me if its as good as it looks, your own impressions and if possible how it drives, preferably at open road speeds rather than just trundling round the suburbs. If it checks out I might take it further.I have spoken to the owner and have done some preliminary research. Its an SA car first registered inNZ 2001,manf 3/98.

i think most people are put off by the miles..and the potential petrol bill?
-
but a well maintained car will have had shocks, suspension bushes etc done....and the bodywork and interior are there to see,and in my opinion it is that that reflects the true condition of the car, plus the service records, not the mileage. If it is as good as it looks i will be able to tell how it goes

if it has been well serviced kilometre arent really a problem with the 5 series.I think the average 5 series lives a much more pampered life than a three....There is the cooling system which some say need to be renewed at 100 000 miles but aprt from tha everything else should be up to date.

i always thought the belt had to have some "play" as too much pressure on the alternator pulley puts too much sideways stress on the bearings which then give way and end up ruining the alternator....praps the alternator aint doing its job? Some belt sqeal is "normal" you can get some stuff to renew the grip ?or is this only applicable to v belts...Hope you get it sorted mate.

prolly preaching to the converted but the b35 had increased valve sizes over the b34?.The B35 was e34 only wasnt it?

i go to shell fly buys plus fluy buys on visa card, local dsupermarket discount, good service plus they seem to run the most specials....Bp would be my next choice but they often seem to lead the price rises. I only ever buy petrol at petrol stations, except the occasional ice cream or drink at holiday times

some of you may know i send newsletters out for the car club....for some events i need to keep track of numbers. Is there an easy way to do this or do i just work with tasks, calendar, notes ??or am i doomed to troll through the emails making lists in excel or word manually

a lot of people will already have prior commitments at xmas/new years. We are not all free agents. October november, feb march are your best bet IMHO.

I find getting the seat back in is more difficult than getting it out.You have to work at both sides and get the seat base far enough back so that the front spring clips are ready to go down into the slots at the front of the seat "frame".Then give a firm push downwards, the seat should be clipped into place.

the only aspect of my e 34 535 that disapoints me is the gas consumption, and i do better than most...the only way you will get 28 is you are very careful on the open road..any stop start and or hills will see you down around 20...and worse. And i have a manual!
