Auto vs Man, specifically '80's e30... Noob 101.
bravo replied to BLACK DORIS's topic in Performance
I have to disagree - the gears are equally strong, but the belts/clutches on the planetary gears will slip and wear out long before a manual box treated with the same disrespect (IMO). We both agree it is the way in which they are driven/trated that is the main problem however. -
Seen this then?

Just handles like one

I have a fuel card that gets me a discount off the pump price. I was reading my monthly statement which lists the pump price and my price and noticed something that concerns me a wee bit. The pump price on 7/11 was $1.6992 a week later it was $1.6593 and so on - what are these extra 0.02c and 0.03c??? Are they charged when paying by eftpos or credit?? if your car takes 50L a time, that's 50x0.0003 = 1.5c extra for the fill - say 1c on a good day, but potentially rounded to 2c. multiply that by 4 times a month = up to 8c a month extra = 96c a year x 1,000,000 motorists (very conservative) and that's the fuel companies ripping us off to the tune of a million dollars a year. bastards.

You're welcome, but no need to quote the post directly above in your reply. Have edited for you. Good luck with your search for the perfect e30. I have this added advice - buy a rubbish one and you will hate bmws and e30s for life - a bad e30 is a huge pain in the arse. A good e30 will still break and need regular servicing and repairs, but you will love it so much in between it wont matter. -
Profile is a percentage/ratio of the width. A 50 profile means the height of the tire sidewall is 50% of the width. If you did want a 235, then 40 would still be a closer match than 45 profile, but both would be legal.

In regards to e30's and similar aged BMW's, here is the dirt: Reasons to buy a manual: Reason 1 - Autos break far more often then manuals - they are not as strong, have more parts and have usually been driven hard due to Reason 3 Reason 2 - Auto servicing costs are higher - fluid plus belts vs just fluid. Reason 3 - Autos are less efficient both in terms of performance and fuel economy due to both efficiencies in the gearbox, the extra weight, and the power-sapping torque converter. Reason 4 - Auto repairs are often higher as they are considered more specialised (usually). Reason 5 - manuals are more engaging to drive. Reason 6 - manual bmws hold there value much better. Reasons to buy an auto: Reason 1 - they are more manageable in stop-start traffic. Reason 2 - if they do break, they are much cheaper to find a second hand replacement (although this will likely have the same probs as the original, and a reconditioned one will run you 4-5 times the cost of a secondhand manual which will probably never need reconditioning unless it is abused.) ipso facto - buy a manual -
PRice dependson market - I'd say somewhere just under $10k depending on buyer, but botom dropping out of the market so that may be rather generous. Never know though - genuine m325i with RD motor is a bit more special than your average thrashed m325i. Kit is BMW factory mtechnic II aka mtechII.

I've just been thinking - this is going to change how I do work. I can look at a site before I go. I can see what traffic control is required - is there room on the side of the road to park vehicles and machinery? Can I see around the bend, or is it vegetated?? Resource consent applications - show sightlines, look at the current type and grade of access, condition/width of road carriageway. And heaps more. I like!

Anything with a CR approaching 10:1 (Most petrol-powered BMW cars) should use 95 or higher to prevent detonation.

They don't update realtime I'm pretty sure. There was an article on them in the local paper when they did Northland - up here they used vans with 4 cameras on the roof like that photo and they just drive along, with GPS running, then they post-process the data and produce the 360° views.
