I went to Mark Wade at Wade Automotive in Penrose - he has been building engines for the race industry for decades. A bit grumpy, but very knowledgeable and experienced. No valve work. He checked the valve guides and said they weren't perfect, but not bad enough to need replacing. He checked the valves and seats too, and said they needed a valve grind but I was going to do that anyway. Regarding hydraulic lifters, basically all you are doing is disassembling, thoroughly cleaning them out, reassembling, and pre-priming them. Carbon and sludge gets in them and stops them working properly. I did a lot of reading, and this video was very helpful;

Thanks Glenn. I have kept all the parts in order. The head came back from the engine shop today with a clean bill of health. I had it checked and then decked. I think I will start a new thread on my engine rebuild so I dont hijack this one.

To answer one of my own questions, I managed to disassemble the lifters by putting one end in the vice and pulling the other end with pliers. I put a rag on each end to avoid any scratching. I still would like to know if I should keep them in order though, as it will make things much easier and faster if I don't have to.

How do I disassemble the hydraulic lifters on the n42/n46 engine? I'm rebuilding them as part of my engine build, but cant figure out how to open them. I've seen diy's for the lifters in the 6 cylinder motors but not for mine. Edited to add; should I keep the lifters in order for when they are reinstalled? I have kept them in order anyway, but wondered if this is necessary?

He's 42. He told me his age and a bunch of other crap about himself and the car instead of answering basic questions.

The guy is a tool. Why am I not surprised he is an abusive racist as well. Good job in "evicting" him. He said his family is wealthy and owns car yards, so I'm sure they do dodgy wofs for him.
-
This ^^^^ I guarantee you will laugh if you do.
-
He told me the perspex box was supporting the structure so it should be fine. He did mention that he had a previous "show car" that got pink stickered after his "mods".

Rofl, so I just rang the guy and he is so full of crap. He says he is the best car audio installer in nz, and that he would have won a bunch of competitions if people weren't so jealous of him. He said that heaps of car audio places (including Rapid Radio) were desperate to hire him. He wouldn't tell me what the front speakers were because they were a "secret" that he spent 10 years developing. He said the only way to find out what the front speakers are is to buy the car. There are two amps, one is an old fusion, and the other is a soundmagnus. I tried telling him that soundmagnus is pretty crap but he tried to tell me they were the best. I could go on, but its best if you ring him yourself if you want a laugh.

Its done 155kms, but I'm going to rebuild it anyway so I'm not overly worried about mileage. Plus, it was only $150. Then I will swap it over with the n46 motor in my car, and rebuild that engine and sell to recoup costs. Or, I might just swap the heads over after I have reconditioned the one I've bought. I'm trying to fix my valve stem seal problem in the most economic way possible (without cutting corners of course).
-
Thanks, but I only have the engine and no info on the car it came from.
-
Well, its been a while and no check engine lights or codes thrown. The $25 fix did the trick. Thanks to all for the advice.

Where is the engine code on the n42 engines? I have found a whole heap of numbers cast onto the block, but none appear to be the engine code? I've been on google for the last hour but no joy so far.......

Colour is a bit too bling for my tastes. I'm sure the car will still look awesome though.

I was about to start a thread on this car but I've been well beaten to it! What a mess of a car lol.

How much will the insurance company sell the car back to you for?
-
Great thread, but if I can point out one thing? Use stainless bolts and nuts. Zinc wont last very long at all as it is designed for indoor use only. The last thing you want is your bolts rusting through and you driving over your splitter. And there is a reason the washers were expensive - they are stainless and not zinc. The stainless washers are compulsory imo. I see you are selling your v12 wagon on trade me - sad times

Sheesh, why the hell did they destroy a nice car that had one of bmw's best colours, with horrible spray cans? *shakes head*

Totally gutted! You have had terrible luck - first the hit and run in the carpark, and now this. I hope you are okay.

Anyone considered doing a calender for next year?

So cool. What bonnet and spoiler is it? I love the matt/satin black paint scheme - very mad max

What an epic car! Have you got any more pics?
