  1. Quotes and terms for Platinum and Star Insurance seem strangely similar, like a "copy my homework but change it so it's not obvious" kind of thing. Anyone know if there's a relationship between these companies? Also I can't find reviews for Platinum Insurance, but I can for Star and they are mostly very positive. Anyone know much about Platinum? I'm leaning towards Star due to this.
  2. Nice. They're awesome cars "Have plans this year to go FBO and stage 2+" I've done this and wish I stopped at stage 1+. I'd recommend sticking with stage 1+ and enjoying it as a street car. Otherwise with the added maintenance, repairs, possible future WOF issues with going catless... you'll wish you just bought an E92 M3 or even an F82 M4 instead
  3. These WOF inspections are very close together as if the first one failed, but it's not logged as a failed inspection. I'd say the WOF guys here were just not recording it accurately. The numbers look reasonable otherwise. Those probably were failed WOF inspections (why else would it have been rechecked so soon?).
  4. Yep for Star and Platinum it's true, there is just a much higher excess for anything that happens on track - 10k or so I think, which is still pretty good considering what could go wrong on a track with multiple expensive cars going fast together. And you need to notify them of each even in advance by filling in a form. They might also want you do do an advanced drivers course based on your experience. I don't have a daily commute for work, but it'll still probably be regarded as a daily as it'll be my only car.
  5. Hello. Any new developments anyone knows about here? Looking to insure a new toy So far I see Platinum Insurance is still around https://www.platinumautoinsurance.co.nz/ Prestigio is still around but under a new name - Star Insure https://starinsure.co.nz/ I have requested quotes from both. Hmm maybe we should add a sticky thread for this. It's a pain to find this info otherwise
  6. I feel like only yesterday these were north of 100k. BMW depreciation hits hard!
  7. "Hi there, yes. The most experienced independent BWM specialist turned out to be BM workshop Greylynn and they have done quiet a few last year. They have indicated if it’s the bearings, it will be around 5k to 7k and for the ones where they had to replace the motor with a used one, they ranged between 15k to 17k. That’s the range we are looking at. Cheers" Given the car we're dealing with here... that is potentially not too bad. The engine isn't seized, it is likely repairable by an engine builder.

I do recall spotting one on trademe asking 8.5k not too long ago, which lines up with Arron's figures.
  9. Not exactly. I have a few guesses. Some oil starvation might have dealt the finishing blow, I did drive it hard that day...
  10. Pretty decently modified with various suspension and performance upgrades, MHD Stage 2+. Putting out a whopping 0hp at the moment...Working on getting the engine replaced after it seized on a trackday back in December
  11. "f'ing 335" describes my feelings these days lol.
  12. Your mistake was going to the dealer. https://www.fcpeuro.com/BMW-parts/M3/Brake-Discs/ $200 USD each. There will be extra costs to ship them in but you'll still be well under $1k NZ. Then go to a decent Euro/BMW specialist. BMW dealers in NZ are terrible. Every single time I've quoted prices from them I just ended up shaking my head and going elsewhere. Too late to help with your M3 I know... but still it might help in future As for new bearings.. well I'm having that done for my replacement 335i engine. It aint cheap, but it's also not too out of line with US costs I've read online. Of course, it's not a BMW dealer doing it.
  13. *when It's a BMW, let's face it
  14. I'm amazed someone buys one of those and thinks "you know what this car needs? more torque!". Absolute madman Guess you can impress/frighten people by initiating burnouts at motorway speeds haha.
  15. I reckon it'll be a lesser extent but not by much, you can still enter most corners at a similar speed. Just your braking won't be as intense. The more powerful cars go faster in the straights and brake earlier, but your cornering speed is similar, since that's all about grip (and how bold you are). I do suspect the B58 in the F series and Supra might be better. Since the Supra is advertised as a track capable car. But I'm not confident enough to put my money on that. I started a thread on it on one of the bimmerpost forums to see if anyone had much experience: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1712582 Not much in the way of technical stuff, and the same guy from the Accusump thread above commented, and he doesn't think it'll be any better.
  16. I'm not convinced baffles are enough on their own, it probably wouldn't be enough for me to be comfortable going all-out on the track in mine again. The M2 has a dual oil pump design. This thread is pretty good, he ended up adding an Accusump: https://bmw.spoolstreet.com/threads/addressing-n5x-oiling-and-spun-rod-bearings-accusump-installed.4034/ I'd want either a retrofit with something like the M2 system or an Accusump. But I think I'll wait until I can get an M4... Turning a non-M into a track car ends up costing you as much as buying the M version, and you're left with something that's worth far less from depreciation... With my luck you'll probably see a thread from me in a year after my new M4 engine seizes on the track.
  17. 135i will be an awesome street car but not a reliable track car. The engines aren't built for track abuse. What about the E90 or E92 M3? They're great track cars and you only need some minor modifications to get them ready for track use. Just brakes really.
  18. The seller doesn't seem too sharp...
  19. My car came with 19s with runflats. First I swapped to standard tyres, difference was huge. So much better. Later I downsized to 18s... difference was enough to be noticeable but pretty small. I swapped back to the 19s after wearing out the rear tyres on the 18s and still found the 19s pretty comfortable. Unless you want new wheels for other reasons, just swap the tyres. Looks like the tyres are fatter on the F31 so your car with 19s will probably still be more comfortable than mine on 19s.
  20. $29k. That's not cheap, I reckon that's about market price for an E46 M3 now. They've been cheaper.
  21. The 335i will make the more comfortable and reliable daily... until you get hooked on modifying it and thrashing it, then it'll start eating up your bank account When stuff does break on the 335i, it'll be much more expensive than the E30. But it should be less frequent so that should balance it out!
  22. If it really is a no expense spared race car, it could be a 50k car... but he hasn't detailed the upgrades at all, so it's doubtful The Cobb tune doesn't inspire confidence, those were never fully developed and Cobb abandoned the BMW platforms long ago.

If it's a recall, hasn't BMW taken care of that for you?
  24. It's a pretty much perfect E46 M3... but 52k is too much. Some M4s are not much more than that.

Saved me heaps on my 335i. They really added very little fuss to the repair process and didn't mind using an aftermarket upgraded part if the mechanic vouched for it. Wouldn't be surprised if I put them off covering 335i's, I cost them a fortune ? "10. Any breakdown caused or contributed to by a manufacturing error regardless of whether the manufacturer accepts liability for that error;" Don't think they'll be too strict on that. My 335i had coolant loss issues due to a loose head bolt, that sure looked like a manufacturing error.
