Welcome. What colour is that? Steel grey? Looks nice.

Thank you. I'm a complete noob when it comes to vehicle ECU's. I've been trying to track down info around the motronic 1.x versions. Still got a bit of searching/reading to do but thanks for the heads up on the processor used. I don't have a read of the program ROM yet. Still trying to figure out how I connect to it so I can get it off. I use Linux for everything except gaming. I'm hoping support for tooling on Linux is reasonable. Keep seeing windows come up in convos around diagnostics...
-
@Karter16 If you could share tooling and setup you have for this reverse engineering work that would be appreciated. If I recall correctly you use Ghidra for reverse engineering the code. But what other tools are you using in the process?
-
Who knows. I'll probably get the itch to put it in the car after playing around with it which might motivate me to give an upgrade a go.
-
Nice. Good to know. Switching out loom is probably beyond my comfort level right now. But I'll def keep that in mind.

I think I have motronic 1.0 with 35 pin connector. That board on the speeduino forum only supports motronic 1.1-1.3 55 pin. Either way I'm still keen to learn more about speeduino and have a play with that motronic PCB regardless (just won't be able to test in my E30 as is). Will still be a good intro into speeduino by playing around with it wired up on the bench.

This is perfect. Never heard of Speeduino either. Looks cool.

One for the 'tell him he's dreaming file'

Haha Memories. It's an NZ company (I think) that does paint protection. Technically their name is Dura-Seal. I think we have it on our Toyota. Wonder if the owner of Dura-Seal was recalling childhood memories when they came up with the name... -
Is This Where The E30 Market Is Now..?

What is it? I don't have FB. Mtech? -
Lots of good info. That sounds like I should actually get a cheap ECU and use that directly. Definitely don't want to mess with the motor for an experiment. Guessing there are ECU simulators as sell (that map-ecu project looks interesting).

This comment at the end of OP post: "PSA: don't try this if your an idiot" Whatever genius. No one is just gonna stumble into wiring up a raspberry pi into a car from the 80's. Plus he didn't share any actual useful info.
-
That makes sense. The part where OP says "lie to the ECU" though seems to suggest some kind of manipulation of input to the ECU. But there's a high chance I'm just misunderstanding the claim in the context of ECUs and how they work. And the OP claim about being "close to fully reverse engineering the data stream from the ecu" is the other part that is confusing me a bit as well. Lying to the ECU and reverse engineering the ECU data stream suggests to me more is being done here than intercepting sensor data? I have a mental model built up in my head around how these parts are connecting up and I'm probably way off. I'm probably making assumptions that don't apply in the ECU realm. I'll look up Hybrid's work. I'm sure I'll learn a bunch from those posts. I need to also familiarise myself with other fundamental things like CAN bus etc. It's all new to me and I could be tripping up over terminology as well. Thanks for the info around piggybacks. I'll look into those.

If you have any resources handy around this stuff I's be keen to see it. This is just a nerd project for me I thought of doing after seeing what that reddit OP did. Wanted to know what that python code behind the terminal is. It's a test file but it probably means he is using python to work with the data. That's probably the most interesting part to me. What is he doing with the output. How is he working with those streams and what has he learned about it. Probably pointless exercise. But interesting.

DM'd this dude about the setup and got blanked. Think they were just showing off with how smart they are rather than intending to share knowledge about the setup and what they did. If I get around to having a crack at this I'll post on this thread. Need to learn a bit more first to make sure I don't brick things in the process.

Ha yea it's been added to the dreamers file. -
Thanks for that. My car is going in to Greg soon. Nice to know I've found someone I can trust with my BMW's.
-
This car is gonna be so clean. Injecting new life into it. Love seeing the progress.
-
Did you order those from your local dealer?
-
Not sure if it's been discussed here but it's been up for a while.
-
Nice. Do you have a link or pics?
-
Yea I'm sure they do.
-
A little more context here from my side. I ordered the parts with the intention of doing the work myself in the first place. I didn't order them with the expectation of outsourcing the work. But my plans changed over the next month. This is my daily and I didn't wanna wait until I could squeeze the time in. We also don't rely on a BMW from the 90's entirely (even though it is my daily). We have a factory new Toyota still under warranty to make sure we aren't stranded for family duties.
-
I imagine shops get some demanding and unreasonable customers. But I also meticulously research parts and wouldn't expect warranty on my own mistakes. Agree it's a shops choice. I didn't get upset either. Decided to try one more place and then get to the work myself. Luckily I found somewhere that is willing to do the work. Obviously it's a leap of faith for them. It's a risk, they don't know me. But after this they'll gain a long term customer. That's also a smart business decision. But it comes with risk. Obviously they were willing to take that risk here. But no hard feelings against the other shop that turned me away. Agree. It is their choice and they get to decide what risk they want to take.

I'm always into E30 content. The passion for the Gusheshe in SA. The Polish E30 scene. The obsession for the E30 among teens and young adults in the states. The OEM+ group and traditionalists. What it means to different groups and how they express their passion for the car in different ways. What are the differences? But also what are the core things that they share in their passion for the E30. My preference these days for mine is OEM+ (I did some dorky stuff to my E30 from my teenage years - but I thought it was cool then 😅). But I like seeing what the Polish community do and the stanced out E30 style in the states (among other scenes around the world). Iconic car with its own sub cultures. Same could be said about other iconic BMW's from the 'golden era'. Would be cool to find out more about these scenes and these classics that continue to draw people to them (from all walks of life). Tons of technical stuff out there. But I think not as much around the various scenes and sub cultures around these cars. I have no idea if this is the sort of thing you were thinking of writing about. But it would be interesting to me.
