  1. Any suggestions on e46 keys ? I only have 1 and am dreading to think what i will do when i accidentally misplace it. are the e46 keys chipped, can i only go to the dealer ? Jonathan
  2. i always wondered if that was a myth, ie my friend is driving a e46 318, and its doing worse than my 330ci. can anyone else confirm this strange trait ? @spikeyLemon was this on the open road ? or town only. Jonathan
  3. hey guys, recently bought a 330ci and dearly miss the idea of a small weekly gas bill ! on the look out for another car, e36 most likely, i have seen a few topics on fuel consumption here, but still looking for a bit more clarity. ie if there were an engine to recommend in the e36 range what would it be ? for stability / economy over power. 316, 318, 320, 323, 325 ? I dont like the idea of a 316, i always thought a decent 323 would be friendly on the gas as i used to own a 325 that did me no harm. I know it is a hard topic because there are many variables, ie heavy feet, tuning etc but any wisdom would be much appreciated !
  4. that bloody auto box was , how to put it, a nut sack, compared to the manual one.
  5. Picka part + 3 hours = m20b27 block. $100 later. Win
  6. Manual ZF box for sale Type: S5-16 Id: 1048 461 134 89/8 2741 $500 - ono Can contact me on 027 555 8985 if needed
  7. Attached is photo, of before and after, this is not what i would recommend, and should probably be under rangi mods thread. I had the privilege of coming across this nightmare when removing a wheel bearing from my brothers 1.8T a4 b5 chassis. the closest thing i had to the diameter i needed to find a nice place on the ring, and be able to bash it out, with out braking the object was a stuffed turbo housing core. after 1.5 hours on the bench grinder it went from a turbo core -> wheel bearing removal tool, even then it still took a good half hour of bashing
  8. Tempted, its a manual 2 door e30, exterior is looking nice, interior has seen better days, well just the front seats. Might just do another nice 323 swap into it, and budget for a 24v turbo build
  9. could you swing like 300, for just the sump -> block -> head -> rocker cover connected ? Or maybe you have a crank to suit 323?
  10. yes, that is comforting to know, we have done every ting in the top end, 2ice !, and chances are, if all of that has been done, and this noise remains, and its hideous, maybe its a SHOT big end, i mean SHOT not worn, ive usually heard a slight knock, but this is HURRENDOUS ! This whole process has been interesting,
  11. Lol does it tick like my one !
  12. You know, after fn round today, doing clearances, again and again, and again, and again, still it tabs like some thing horrible. So i was beginning to side towards what you are talking about there. Timing was out when this started happening (only at the dizzy, i doubt that the cam belt slipped during his driving), and maybe he was giving it death some point, and some pistons hit the top. I am going to assume that, get another engine, and investigate later, when im not feeling like driving this piece of sh*t off a cliff. Because as far as i can tell, ive heard bad clearances before in a earlier project, and with out being there in person you under estimate how loud this noise is. I put some thing like a stethoscope up to the cover, and cylinder 1, 2, 4 is letting off a hell of a noise, so i find it strange that all of this could have happened at once. But if i do take this silly engine out again, i really really hope, that its some thing huge, to justify taking it out (3rd time in a week) and wacking another one in !
  13. Ok well, after taking some of the eccentrics out, it would appear some are flipped 180 degrees, / inverted, giving the connection between eccentric and valve a very angled one. Could this cause this sort of catastrophic noise ? e.g. hitting the valve hat on the way down or some thing ? Glenn you have been very very helpful, if this resolves the matter i owe you some beers on my next trip up to auckland
  14. That is comforting to know, my brother did alot of the work swapping over rocker arms etc, and taking accentric out as he was afraid of breaking them. And i warned him to wait till i got back. What is a good way to check those eccentrics are the correct way round ? i suspect a few may be the wrong way round if possible. Did you hear the recent video ? Thank you again for your advice, it doesn't go un noticed
  15. Need to cover all my bases on this stupid car problem, ideally if possible need block + head for m20 b23 / b25, intake exhaust and everything else doesn't matter
  16. apparently a damaged rocker arm shaft can cause this sound, what to look for in diagnosing this ? we just put another FN one in, and carefully too !
  17. yah i know, maybe i should just roll with it ! it nearly sounds like its running dry, do those e30 oil pumps f out often? some thing glen might know. the cam that is in there is from a 323i M 1983, with a higher lifting cam, any chance the clearances should be different ? does any one know the measurement if so
  18. So this problem continue's, Rocker's were replaced, cam was replaced with some thing newer, cam was polished at engine reconners, this is the updated sound
  19. Turns out, some one had done a botch up job on some sort of a fuel pump kill switch, and the fuel had decided to stop pumping after i checked it ! as i started checking every thing again ! This is turning into a nightmare
  20. lead is sparking, plug is sparking, this is just down right weird
  21. Have replaced main lead from coil to dizzy. I have spark, I have fuel I have Air, Timing is fine (the timing light is flashing on the line between the 0 | T on the crank pulley, correct me if it should be some thing else) Still not starting, any reason why this could be ?? Help ## edit, Clearances are to spec, and i have compression (170 - 180psi) !
  22. i dont trust people either with regards to mechanical prices especially on things like this. Find out a rough estimate quote by calling round 3 or so places, telling them the most accessible way to fix it is to re thread the hole and replace it manually, then way that up with buying a suitable thread / or borrowing, im sure a bimmersporter in CHCH will have a tap / die set that they can come round with for some beers, and then just suit out the pipe first, so you can get the corresponding tap / die as i said, way it up, if they can fix it for under 100, which im sure they can, just wack it on through, since all they have to do is what you would do. you may find you get a respectable price, if you ring up and say, this is what i need you to do etc.
  23. I had to do some thing similar, either as glen said head come off, or do what i did and leave head on, take engine out. Depending on what you have, will suit which one. I like to leave the head on, because if i take it off, i plane it, and do the bottom end while im at it. You have to carefully more the valves/cam round to get it out with out doing any thing stupid / ruining another rocker, quite easy if the engine is out to do it by your self
  24. Right, so the engine came out, to replace a rocker rail. and on the way in / out, the lead that goes from the coil -> dizzy got snapped, we found another one that had the same fittings from a Golf VW, but cant seem to get it to fire timing is fine, e.g. nothing has been changed. Can you mix and match HT / leads, or is this not recommended, as some leads may have a max voltage they can handle, thus not providing enough spark to the plugs ? (replacing it when the week finally comes, just want some heads up) Any advice / knowledge on this Greatly appreciated
  25. You any good with a tap and die set ? make a thread going into it, plumbers will have a pipe that will fit in there with thread also. But once your done doing that, you might wanna way up the ease of just buying a new one. I personally would tap and die a new one in there, since we have the tools, and STUPID things like this happen all the time with us !
