I'm pretty confident I can feel it from the drivers if not both front sides of the car. I'm also pretty confident it's in front of me. Cheers.

Actually new brakes aren't on yet so I'll double check the bolts when they go on. Cheers.

The sliding pins or the carrier bolts?

(Sorry title is meant to say loud, not lous!) Hi Car is 1988 E28 525ee. When braking suddenly I feel and hear a loud thump from the front suspension (somewhere up there) when I first hit the brakes. It's making me a bit nervous. Lower control arms recently replaced but it was doing it prior to this as well. Any ideas? Cheers

"ATF Dextron II or III were no doubt recommended for our E30s 20 years ago, but technology has improved in fluids since then. I certainly wouldn't use the factory recommended oil for my car these days." Redline also do ATF DX2 and 3. Its a spec, nothing to do with quality. Factory specs are still relevant, engine oil grades for example. These have changed over the years as a result of tolerances, emissions and consumption, not age.

There's an easier way involving removing the return hose, emptying the reservoir , running the engine and topping up the reservoir continually until new fluid comes out of the return hose.THAT WAS NOT THE INSTRUCTION. Please google it. Like I said I saw it on one of the UK E30 websites but it sounded pretty straight forward to me. May well be a two person job though. Someone else here will have done it I'm sure.

Supercheap have the correct DX2 for like $30 for 4 litres of Penrite, plus a little freight 'cause it's a special order.

Just thought I'd give a word of warning on the caliper paint available from Supercheap. Apparently many people have had good experience with it. Not me. After many days of hard work and preparation I discovered that it simply dissolves and drips away when it comes into contact with brake cleaner. Supercheap were very surprised and at first didn't believe me and wouldn't give me a refund until I actually demonstrated it for them. They said they would take it up with their parts people but I've ordered some VHT instead. I think this may be one of those times when 'ya gets what ya pays for'. And in case anyone asks... parts thoroughly prep'd, degreased, cleaned, painted, cured for 4 days yada yada yada. In other words I carefully followed the instructions. Hoping for better luck with the VHT!

I think you can do it yourself. I read a very good 'how to' on one of the Uk E30 websites a while back and if you google it lots of leads come back. The BMW systems are self bleeding so that makes it a whole lot easier.Let me know how you go - I've got the same thing scheduled on my E28 soon. Cheers

Cheers, Ill check them out tomorrow.

Thats a good idea. That'll make it easy to remember.

BMW recommend the Redline fuel system cleaner. You can buy it at BNT and it's not too expensive (cheaper than trademe).I've used it and I think it made the car run a bit smoother. I add it about every six months. Steer well clear of lube additives like Motorup. Totally unnecessary and numerous independent studies have found they often do more harm than good. Put the money you would spend towards a better quality engine oil instead. As far as octane goes BP Ultimate is all good!

Where did you get the heat resistant primer? I can't find any!I'm stripping them back really well - wire brush thingy on my power drill. It's just that there are nooks and craneys (spelling?) which are difficult to reach with the brush. I'm then using a dremmel head as best I can. I'd like to use a primer but if I can't find anything to handle the heat I guess I'll just go straight on with the paint.

Thanks I look forward to trying them.Cheers.

Hi guys, I'm going to be painting my new calipers once I've finished stripping them back. There is a certain amount of surface rust which I will get rid of (as much as I can anyway). Does anyone know of a rust treatment or primer that would be suitable for the kind of temperatures the calipers see. I can't find any, seems most people simply paint straight onto the metal. Cheers.

+1 on the thermostat

The E28 has larger dipped beam lenses than almost any other model (E23 facelift too I think) so it might look a bit funny with E30 etc lights. I fitted some 4000k (around that make anyway) H4 bulbs and it improved the lighting substantially. Its not that there was much more light, its that the colour made it so much easier to see the road ahead. Ok, so you might look like a boy racer but I think the E28's look great with them and they are the single best (so far) upgrade I have made. Will do the H1 highs when they blow too. If that doesn't do it for ya, rewire the lighting systems with relays to use more powerful bulbs but remember to keep it legal. Don't just fit more powerful (higher wattage) or you will fry your wiring. Spend even more and fit HID's. Of course, before doing any of the above, make sure you have the headlight aligned. Most mechanics or auto electricians should be able to do this. Or, get the specs and do it yourself with a friendly wall!

I'm moving to Aus!
-
Remember a couple of years ago they tried to ban Santa's in malls from saying 'ho ho ho'! I've got a few Aussie mates so I'm not gonna bash them, but their bureaucrats do make some funny decisions sometimes! Mind you, they probably say the same about us!

Hi folks, I'm sorry 'cause I know this question comes up often. I've searched but haven't found a conclusive answer so here goes. I've finally got my upgrade parts, 750i front calipers and rotors, 730 rear calipers with E34 rotors. The rear pads are sorted - came with pagid I think. The fronts came with a set of 'Fargo' pads which are basically brand new. Now I've never heard of these pads and a web search comes up empty. Unless someone can tell me otherwise I'm thinking these are probably nasty and used by taxi drivers! I know it's 'only' a 525e and a lot of reference is made to high power cars needing better pads. I want good brakes. I can't really see why an M5 braking from 100 kmh (or even 50) deserves better pads than a 525e? I am referring to every day driving of course and I realise that if you're using it for track etc then you would want better pads. But I just want to improve and maximise what is essentially the only active safety feature (no ABS) of my car. So I guess my question is this: What is the 'best' street pads for an E28 with the brake upgrade? Is it OEM? I've used Pagid / Jurid before and found them fine, but haven't really explored anything better. I'd like to preserve the rotors if possible but if more dust is a by product of better stopping power then I can live with dirty wheels. As per usually this is a long post for whats probably a short answer but I'd like to hear your opinions and experiences. Cheers.

I remember seeing this now.. Was kinda hoping he meant BMW V8.
-
E28 V8? Please tell more!
-
Did the 750i upgrade require any mods? I've read that it is a straight bolt on upgrade but then I also read somewhere that the carriers are different. I'm hoping to pick up a full set (rotors, calipers, carriers, pads) tomorrow. Cheers.

Good point I haven't checked the UJ. Just know there is play and a groanching noise and feel through the steering wheel.
