  1. Two questions... Can someone please tell me what size and type of sump washers I need for both the engine and the auto trans for an 87 525e. Also I think the steering box is pretty much poked. Does anybody know what (if any) other models boxes (that just doesn't sound right) will fit. Is there such a thing as an upgrade for this part? Cheers in advance.
  2. How do you interpret those numbers? I'd be keen to check mine.

    MP3 Player

Yip iPod here. You would have to do some trial and error to find alternatives. So you might as well start where you will probably end up anyway. Classic is the one to go for.
  4. I couldn't give a f**k if people think I'm a try hard driving with my front fog lights on. I do it to be more visible to other road users. If people think I'm a tosser at least that means they've seen me. I'm a fan of DRL's and had them on my last car. I use the fog lights because they have a wider but shorter spread of light therefore hopefully more noticeable to people at intersections, driveways etc. Id rather be a 'try hard' and avoid an accident than look 'cool' (adding chromes to the old girl next - yeah right) and end up with the car written off, or worse still, someone injured or killed. I also wear a huge hi viz jacket on my motorbike - doesn't make me enjoy it any less but hopefully increases the odds of me going home to my family in one piece. However... rear fog lights are blinding and I do hate them being used in anything other than fog. And just because it's the law doesn't mean the law is right. I fitted DRL's to my previous car and it passed many WOF's. In fact I installed them in accordance with LTSA regs but I really can't see any difference between driving with DRL's or fog lights on. And that's my two cents!
  5. Definitely visit Dachau. It's a life changing experience. I can also highly recommend Neuschwanstein. Munich is a great place. I'll be back there someday.

No they are factory fitted in both the Volvo and Toyota.

I've 2 Recaro seats and it's something I'm not really prepared to compromise on. I know you can get narrower seats but it would kinda feel like cutting off my nose to spite my face, if ya know what I mean.

    Exactly the point.

My partner is going to be doing childcare so will need to fit 3 child seats. Actually a wagon wide enough to fit 3 child seats across the back seat would be fine but the only ones I've come across are either British assembled (I used the term loosely) 4x4's or Australian! I won't go near either. Checked out an Opel Omega the other day but I don't think they are as big inside as a Commodore.

Thanks for the help so far guys. Yip budget really is around the $5k mark so X5 out of the question. I drove a Volvo v70 yesterday. Not bad but terrible torque steer and not that quick considering it was the T5. Also almost everything about it seems unnecessarily complicated so I think it might be a bit of a time bomb. The interior creaked like a rocking chair! Also drove a Toyota Scepter (Camry). It was ok but totally uninspiring and for a 3.0l really gutless. Got back in the E28 and told my partner is wouldn't 'trade down' to that. The 1988 BMW was still nicer to drive than both the Volvo and the Toyota. Might consider a really well loved Volvo 850 T5 or R but only if it actually drives better than the V70. Does any one here on Bimmersport have a 7 seater and if so what are your thoughts? I feel a Honda Odyssey coming on....
  11. I need a new car and it looks like it's gonna have to be a seven seater. I've got a low budget (around $5000ish, maybe more for the right car) and I'm desperately trying to avoid a people mover. Did BMW ever to a touring with 7 seats? All help appreciated and suggestions for alternatives too! Cheers
  12. I bet you went to 'L Alexander' here in Wellington... Wish I'd know about the MTA thing when I went to them!
  13. Hi guys, I'm just curious at this stage about the physical issues regarding putting one of two engines in an E28. The first is a M50 / M52 / M54, 2.5, 2.8 or 3.0. The other is the M60 / M62, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.4. I know there is one E28 on the net using the V8 but I can't find anyone using an M50 or later straight 6. There would undoubtedly be many other issues, such as electronics, transmissions etc but I'm just curious at this stage about the engines. Cheers

Absolutely completely agree. We do the same thing and get the same comments. People need to wake up and realise where these problems start!
  15. The black wheels look better than I thought they would, but a little AMGish for my liking. I vote leave them silver. Where did you get all the bushes and were they expensive (only expecting one answer to that question)? The car looks awesome. I'm jealous!
  16. Never really liked the E28 Mtec kit, except the front air dam. I'd love one of those!
  17. Do you recognise the drivers seat Brent?
  18. Hey guys, thanks for the comments. Yip direct fit. There will be minor modification required for the sliding interior panel, but the glass is a direct swap. Cost - $39 so far plus petrol. Entire sunroof assembly from Saab 9000 bought from Pickapart. Removing the assembly took about 30 minutes and was easier than I expected. The only thing to make sure of is that the glass and plastic bits are in good nik. Luckily this one was. The E30 sunroof are not the same. The only other BMW one as far as I'm aware is the E23. And the Saab 9000. Pays to keep an eye out on the pickapart website, $39! Even my partner thinks it was a good buy and that's saying something! Yeah I did used to work in Karori and drive Aro Valley every day but not lately. Cheers
  19. Hey folks, Removed the old and very rusty sunroof yesterday and fitted the new (second hand) glass one. I'm happy with the look and fit and stage two is the sliding thingy inside. Needs to be recovered first with the original BMW fabric first. The hardest part was getting all the rust flakes out of the roof cavity with a magnetic pen thing. Took about 90 mins all up. Will post more pictures when it's completed. Cheers

  21. Hi folks, I'm about to fit an extra trans oil cooler as I've recently fitted a towbar. I know it's probably not vital, but I've got the bits and I want to anyway. The thing I don't know (yet) is which lines on the radiator are the feed and which is the return line. Attached is a pic of the radiator fitted to my car which is the small type as the car has air conditioning. The lines are both on the bottom of the radiator, not on the side as with some of the other radiators. I know there are other ways to figure this out, I'm just hoping someone here will know know anyway. If anyone knows please help me out (and if you could refer to them as drivers side or passengers side). I guess the other thing that would be handy to know is the type of fitting to the radiator connections. Cheers
  22. I've liked Q8 Formula F1 10w50. It's full synthetic and good value. I think you can buy it directly from Q8 NZ. Google them, they are in Paramata, Wellington. Filter from the dealer - cheaper than Repco or Supercheap and genuine, I think I paid about $17 last time.

    What is this?

That all makes sense now! Thank you once again. There was a small piece of metal inside the braided hose. At first I thought it had broken off, then I realised the holes at either end are different sizes. I'll clean it and put it back in. Now the tube I have cable tied in the pictures is just windscreen washer tube and I didn't intend it to be perminant but what type of hose should I put in there? And the car does run better. A bit smoother and more responsive and since it's an "e" it's all low RPM! Cheers again.

    What is this?

Ok so since reconnecting it it's only driving better in my head!
