Because when you’re looking at buying an E30 practicality is high on the list of “must haves” 🫠

Only thing better, apart from the boot, in a Compact than an E30 are the engines.

E30 is a better-looking car, imho. E36 is quite possibly a better car (interior trim excepted.)

M44 in an E30 is a fabulous performance change.

M43 in an E30 provides better performance than most E30 4-cylinder engines, is reliable, and economical. (But no-one does this!)

I do feel an E30 with a 4-cylinder engine is sportier, and with a 6-cylinder engine is more suited as a lovely cruiser. Just a weight distribution thing.

And I know many people will disagree. :D

Id add some stuff having owned both for at least 6 years- E30 tax(obviously), all E36 front end benefits - 5 lug\wheel selection, plug and play steering racks, M3\vert underbrace, camber washers, easier to work on and generally far more part options available.

Rear end is easier to work on due to more space and the inner brake lines are way easier to change.

E30 benefits that i can think of - factory medium case diff and axle setups if you doing a engine swap\power upgrade. Some interior stuff is higher quality - door cards, headlining etc. Proper spare wheel. Old style sport seats and no airbags (preference). Possibility the having a stiffer body due to rear seat bulkhead.

M44

Great engine which suits both chassis with a manual box. Always wanted to see it in a drag race - M44 vs M20B25, i reckon the M44 would do ok.

Those more modern m42 intake manifolds just don't look as good as the e30 type!

Also I don't think that is a dogleg box unfortunately, I did a bit of a Google as it caught my interest

It is manual. But also the seller isn't claiming it's a genuine mtech 1. Just that it has the kit.

Has the switch for the auto gearbox on the centre console, either been converted to manual or the console is from an auto.

Prices are all over the place.

Just seen a nice-looking (photos only) grey 4-door 1989 318i converted at some point to manual, seats look good. $6k

Also seen a 318 advertised at $21k.
