BreakMyWindow 1878 Report post Posted September 17, 2019 Had a bit of a hiccup. Didn’t attach the nee expansion tank properly in to the new fan shroud i bought. End result was one of its hoses rubbing on the ac compressor. Had i have not used the ac on the drive back from Hampton downs on the weekend I would have been ok, but good thing I hadn’t used it any more prior to having a look over the maintenance i did. I’ve decided to remove the intake manifold and replace all the plastic crumbly shyte under there along with a new ccv and coolant pipes that fit on to the block. Have noticed some more grunt from doing the vanos seals. Well worth it. Difference between ID and OD of damaged hose is about 5mm. Looks like I might have maybe 1-2mm of rubber left before she bursts. Alot of swearing ensued.
hqstu 780 Report post Posted September 18, 2019 Good thing you spotted it though... will need to pay a visit when the 330 is ready for a maiden (longer) voyage... one (new) wheel and tyre to go - and it's going on tomorrow...
BreakMyWindow 1878 Report post Posted September 29, 2019 Casually having a stroll through Zebra Onehunga as you do and spotted a standard e39 fitted with black leather Sport seats. Boot and all 4 doors were deadlocked so out with the holesaw again. Leather is fairly good and all the electrics work but god damn were they in a state of filth. The drivers seat smelled of dog, sweat and mildew and the passenger seat was just mainly mildew and old beer smell. Spent a good day of solid dismantling and cleaning of the seats. Used some baking soda and white vinegar to kill off the mould and other gross. Will be letting these air out in the sun for a couple of days before installing.
BreakMyWindow 1878 Report post Posted September 30, 2019 All cleaned up and fitted. Need to open up the drivers seat control box to fit a new bushing so i can put the recline/headrest button back on, and the switch covers for the thigh support on both seats are missing. Hopefully can find those in the e39 530i msport festering away at pickapart Mangere.

M3AN 4016 Report post Posted September 30, 2019 (edited) Nice one. Maybe consider swapping the seat base cushions from L<->R to even out the wear (and stop it getting worse on the driver's side). Edited September 30, 2019 by M3AN sp

Good idea but after all the work i’ve done on these seats I am 100% over it. 1

BreakMyWindow 1878 Report post Posted October 23, 2019 Intake manifold and underneath it maintenance all done. New gaskets, vacum caps, ccv and hoses, coolant hard pipes and a bit of a clean up. Coolant hard pipes did break removing them as expected but was pretty easy to clean up the remaining bits stuck in the engine. Bonus points to previous owners for regular coolant changes as there was no corrosion or build-up of crusty coolant any where.
BreakMyWindow 1878 Report post Posted October 23, 2019 Building back the ‘trust’ after a coolant job on an old car involves religiously checking coolant temps and for leaks after each drive. So far so good, lighting was a bit better so here’s a before and after of the engine bay. Many new shiny parts! Keen eye will notice the intensive washer bottle and pump delete. Replaced the washer jets with e60 fanning ones. So much better than the e39 baby pee dribble jets. Engine bay when first acquired. Engine bay after all M54 maintenance done, including new fan shroud and intake boots, and a good clean up.

BreakMyWindow 1878 Report post Posted November 4, 2019 Bought a lower kms trans and got the torque converter in it rebuilt. Did a basic service on the trans too, filter kit and drained as much of the old oil out as i could.
BreakMyWindow 1878 Report post Posted December 7, 2019 On to the rear supension. Just replacing the swingarm balljoints, sway bar links and 15mm mtech2 bar. Upper control arms are loose in the balljoints but no play so they’ll get done later on. The shocks were suprisingly good still. They mount to the subframe and have very small travel so I don’t think they get as hard a time compared to e39 sedan. Thanks @andrewm for loaning the tool will need to make some repairs to it though ? As for the subframe bushes I’m thinking i’ll just pay someone to do them. No hoist and no special tool ?

BreakMyWindow 1878 Report post Posted January 30, 2020 Bit of progress. Front strut brace. + 3.3459521 KW Subframe bushes replaced with solid rubber units. This has made such a massive difference. 2 of the old bushes were starting to crack but still had fluid in them. The other 2 had ruptured. Pics of one of the ruptured ones:
BreakMyWindow 1878 Report post Posted March 13, 2020 Some more things to cross off the maintenance list. New rear discs and pads. Re-instated the wear sensor too. Very decently priced for the whole shebang through bmworkshop for gen ATE parts. Had an annoying issue with wind noise and a wee bit of water ingress through the rear door fixed window when washing the car, but thankfully not when raining. Was thinking it was the crusty window moulding, but turns out whoever replaced that window in the past didn’t use a thick enough bead of polyurethane. The glass was being held in tight by surrounding trims however not water or air tight. I was dreading having to cut the glass out but it just lifted right out. Put a pretty tall bead of polyurethane in an now she’s water and air tight.
