Kees 592 Report post Posted March 10, 2022 16 hours ago, TermiPeteNZ said: Anybody get the rego on the 2nd one? BMP885 for the second one, the first one was AMT897 and within that listing there were photos of another seemingly identical Le Mans Blue car with the plate ACU598, all three cars having around 140,000km! The fact that two e39 M5s were on trademe within a week of each other is mind blowing. Last one I remember seeing on Trademe was an Oxford Green one at the end of 2020 (YD1500 I believe). topnotchrally 101 Report post Posted March 10, 2022 I think many will remember the black/black one in Feb 2020. It was an auction for $20k buy now and incredibly, no one bought it on the first go... how the times have changed. It sold for $20k and appeared a few weeks later for $32k with people whining as the have now. Here it is... hard to believe now. https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/bmw/listing/2511543305 Here's the history. Usesless info... I was trying to kick my M-habit at that time and had sworn off TM for a few weeks... bad timing!

Its great how when I didn't have the money, cars like this were 20K. Fast forward 2 years when I could start to justify $20-30K on a special car like an e39 M5, B7 RS4, E46 M3 etc, and I'm completely priced out of the market. I have a folder on my computer dedicated to cars I have spotted for sale which I think were bargains. That M5 is part of it! If anyone knows of a super high ks/less pampered "cheap" E39 M5 (i.e less than $40K), please let me know 😂 Edited March 10, 2022 by Kees

Id bet most of these E39 M5's need many 1000's spent on them regardless of price\condition to get them back good mechanical state. They are still an older used BMW after all but with added M-tax. That is true, even that second example that was for sale with 140,000km had a strange "startup noise". I'm sure a couple E39 M5s and E46 M3s have racked up some higher ks, and they might even be the best ones to get as they've clearly had work done to them for them to rack up the ks. Surely there's a 300,000km e39 M5 in someone's shed...
Eagle 1660 Report post Posted March 10, 2022 Yeah id imagine the real high k ones are used and less likely to be for sale, rather barely used, held\sold for profit. Seen a few E36 M3's with S50 engines in NZ with over 300,000km, not much else.

Shame my old M328i has an S54 in it now, the S50 was trucking along nicely.

str8_6 275 Report post Posted March 11, 2022 The e39 M5’s seem to do big mileage overseas and remain reasonable in terms of reliability. Definitely one of the more robust M cars. Keep a set of rear sway bar brackets handy. They seem to snap regularly 😂

The others were bargains for their apparent condition, this one definitely looks to be a little rougher around the edges than the others. Also has the highest ks out of the 3. Also has the startup rattle that was noted by the second one for sale. However, I reckon the seller will probably get more than the second one which was listed for 55K, simply because he can adjust his price if required. Someone will definitely want it. Still a tidy car overall. Also, have the front seats been swapped for standard e39 seats? I thought all M5s had sports seats. Have never seen one with standard seats. Standard seats an option?: Under-tray seen better days No floor mats N
BMWTouring 20 Report post Posted April 7, 2022 They are comfort seats, which it was ordered with from new by the looks of the build sheet..
Harper 536 Report post Posted April 7, 2022 (edited) The comfort seats are really sad looking compared to the sport seats most of them have. Anyone know if there are any M-texture M5s in NZ? I'm guessing not since they are crazy rare. Edited April 7, 2022 by Harper
m325i 709 Report post Posted April 7, 2022 I've not driven an e39 m5, but I think I would rather have a super tidy e90 with budget for all the maintenance than $65k for a rough one of these. Condition & kms being equal, I'd take the m5 though.

A good one is worth that, a rough one isnt, but there are so few on the market at any one time they can kinda ask what they want. I miss the days where they were trading for 20-25k. It has such a good technical / retro vibe.
coop 261 Report post Posted April 7, 2022 (edited) God, those $10 repco spray can style black rims change the whole appearance of the car. Along with the tatty looking front lip, it looks like it should be cruising around the streets of Huntly or Flaxmere on dole day. An E30 M3 I saw with mtex in it on instagram a while back: But when you're doing a whole interior the cost of the fabric adds up fast... and with there being so many cool period correct fabrics available for the E30 I'd probably end up going one of those routes. You're welcome to have a poke around mine to see what you think of the fabric in person if there is another meet sometime soon. Kees 592 Report post Posted April 7, 2022 (edited) Just noticed no shadow trim either. Normal chrome part of the "comfort" spec like with the seats? Looks a bit weird having the chrome and then black wheels imo. Edited April 7, 2022 by Kees
