So yesterday I grabbed on a M54B30 from a NZ new E39 at pick a part. It turned over and seemed to have no sign of water in the oil or vise versa so i pounced on it as it could be the perfect powerplant for the e30 race/club car im building. About an hour and a half and $289 (charged for a 4cyl) later, it was mine. So im new to these 24v motors and I need to know what im working with here. I really want to know if its good to go and not rooted. What should i be checking to make sure its still usable as is? Eg how can I be sure the head gasket isn't blown? Not too keen to take the head off unless i have to. Should I re torque the head bolts to check if the head hasn't pulled the studs out and buggered the thread in the block?? What else should i be checking? It has done 170,000kms going by car jam (so should be only just run in) but worryingly the car hadn't been in a big hit. It was just in really bad shape. Cheers

Its a pretty well documented swap and in my opinion really easy, if you are doing all the work yourself you could do the engine and suspension swap for not much more than a couple of grand, i spent a bit more than that on my latest one due to me buying alot of extras. If you had everything ready to go you could do the swap in a weekend as its all rather straight forward. If you intend to use the suspension from the 325i to do you 5 stud swap the front shocks will catch in the e30 tunnels as they arent big enough so youll need to buy e36 M3 shocks and use the e30 springs and top hats or run coilovers. You're right about the rear youll need a setup from a z3 or compact e36

Despite the car being half heartedly for sale, im still working on it. Todays task was to finally fit the little bitch of an anti-rattle clip. Started with this, Did this, and instantly failed the intelligence test >_< and finally resorted to installing it correctly. I also degreased the only spot in the engine bay where there was oil, down the side of the engine where the old leaking oil cap had made a mess. New cap is holding oil in mint. No pics though as it wasnt easy to see in the first place, just makes me happier knowing its not so oily now. Went for a hoon, and yay for no chatter chatter rattle rattle going over bumps now. Finally.

OMG, this project is so slow. Got the above all welded in, but fially got some Nice Domes head SS capscrews. Been a bit more progress at the front end of the engine-bay. New slam panel with IC & Radiator Mounted: New End tank for the IC coming together: And the mount for the pedal box: Got the reinforcing plate mostly welded onto the floor today for the pedal box mount to attach. So I can then get onto the brake & clutch lines. Hope to get the IC & Radiator mods all welded up this week too.

Lol - Bearing issues .. Read: http://bimmersport.co.nz/topic/48899-wtb-s65b40-e92-m3-engine/ Yeah, it looks bloody awesome. I suppose they had to have something to set the LE500 cars apart from the regular ones. This is sort've what I'm going for, except at this stage with black wheels. I was going to buy an Akrapovic exhaust as well but at this stage it's on hold.
