Today I made good use of nothing to do and pulled the gearbox off to see what disaster awaited me. What I came upon wasn't pleasant. Those with weak stomachs dare not read on. This is what fell out as I separated the gearbox from the block: The remains in the bellhousing: Then I went back under the car to have a look at the pressure plate and remove that behemoth of an assembly. This is what awaited: I was not expecting that, and can't say I've seen that before. It must have been one hell of a party in there (which I funded by the way). The total sum of the destruction: Luckily no damage was done to any other parts so I can just put on the new flywheel and clutch kit and hopefully carry on with skids. I don't like to end on a down note, so here is a stance picture: Phwoar.

So after I figured out how to make the car run, and not have the horn sound after refitting the battery, I have a new gremlin. My central locking now doesn't work, (Can't even lift the knobs to unlock them from inside) Sunroof don't go, And wipers only work on full speed. I absolutely had get gas, and I never new that the central locking also controlled the fuel flap too. So now I have a broken fuel flap hinge too. (Something I'm not stoked about!) These three problems are clearly linked. (I've found in the past that I can't open (or close) the sunroof while the window is going up of down) therefore it stands to reason that they're interconnected. Anyone had this problem before?

Progress is slow at the moment as we are getting to the difficult parts of the build at the moment. All the driveline parts have been mocked up, drive shaft is out being shortened and balanced at the moment. Have refreshed all bushes in the shifter with delrin and added a custom built DSSR. the shifter feel now is fantastic now to add a weighted gear knob to finish the whole setup off. Have been spending the last few weeks trying to get the new exhaust manifolds built to work around the the steering shaft and be able to have them fitted to the engine before install. Will get photos up when the extractors are completed. Fingers crossed in the next two weeks the exhaust will be completed then i can haul the engine out for the final time to refresh everything and paint the engine bay. Picked up some E38 wheels from francois and fitted with some more appropriate sized tyres fitted them up and pushed the car out of the shed to see how the final fitment will be, quite happy with how its sitting now.

Thanks for all the replies. All sorted now. The 5 cost $60 to fix and the repairer bought the old 4 off me for a $100 so I purchased a Lifeproof protector for the 5

The spigot in the end of the crank? Pack as much grease into the centre of it as you can then pump it out by tapping a snug fitting piece of steel into the centre.

Julian, I think you should have a go taking some black and white monochrome photos with your car parked in that street. Stunning car nonetheless.

Yep, Picton. Just a touch up for now. Sourcing some headlining material and will then do bonnet and sunroof respray at the same time.

It's been a while since I've updated this thread, so here goes! Finally got the engine in and running with the help of a few mates and Ray at HellBM. Not without some hiccups along the way of course. Managed to make it to the end of year ECC meet. After driving here and home again we established that the poly mounts were over the top and decided to swap them out for rubber oem ones pronto. Next trip after was off to Hampton Downs to watch the One Hour Endurance race as part of the BMW Race Driver Series. A mighty set of scales appeared and we took this opportunity to weigh her for shits and giggles. A solid 1300kgs. Check our Keith's cheeky grin! I also established that the car could make a great tent! Up north we went to Waipu where we went camping. Not without a few problems along the way though... Overheating (ish). Thanks to Jibs who followed me back to the North Shore afterwards to make sure I got back without breaking down. New radiator hose fixed that issue. Then come Christmas holidays it was time to freshen up a few bits and pieces. Throw back to the 80s where the car finally got given a badge for the tailgate (thanks Lance - Merry Christmas) Uh oh... found a small spot of rust where the antenna is... Fixed/Cleaned up But still leaking?! Then we decided we needed to put the car to use.. what it was designed to do. Hello Hampton Downs here we come! Opened her up to see how she looked... Simon then found some sweet wheels for his race car... of course first they shall be test fitted on the Touring to see how it looks (still on their way from overseas - can't wait) Got the new springs in. Super Lows in the rear and 4cyl race series springs in the front... thoughts? The body has now clicked over the 360,000 km mark. Time to find out where this leak was coming from round the front roof area. Pulled out the headlining fearing the worst.... but pleasantly surprised to find no rust. Headlining has seen better days though! Next up, fog lights. Found some cheap very cracked ones. Found some plastic lens on the interwebs and fixed them up. Good as new. Uh oh... so this happened. Good person though for leaving a note. No sweat, prompted me to give the car a refresh. Time ti paint the bumper trimmings. The exhaust has been sitting wonky for some time so time to fix that up too. Now sits perfect with the correct brackets. Along the way we also got some nice interior throughout the last few months. Installed now and feels luxurious. Car attacked me however when installing... Also redid the side skirts, freshened them up... Found a minor imperfection just in time... Haven't got a decent picture since last weekend with the side skirts back on but here she is next to her younger but chubbier sister. Sourced a brand new OEM Sunroof panel from our friends at BMW NZ.... To be painted next week and also the rust fixed up. Once back I hope to get the headlining done ASAP as well as the car tinted. For any one who can help, I'm also after the following parts pictured below. I hope to keep you guys a little bit more updated going forward

Drove to Napier and back this weekend - just under 1000kms round trip - and it was an absolute pleasure. So much grip in the twisties it's insane and more than enough power to make the very best of the steep uphill passing lanes between Taupo and Napier. Engine absolutely purred and managed a 12.7L/100 average despite some spirited driving. That may not sound that flash but is pretty amazing compared to the 24L/100 she sits on with my general weekend use! Unfortunately, the AC compressor developed a death rattle halfway. I'm picking failed clutch bearing as the same thing happened to my old E39. Probably cheaper to replace the unit than repair, so hoping I can find a good used one. It was stinking hot in the Bay, so it was a tad sweaty on the return journey but that's what the big pillarless coupe windows are for. I am deaf now though and my hair looks like Kramer from Seinfeld. Forgot to take the camera so had to rely on phone pics...
