    Gave the 140 a retune and an AFE filter to extract some more power. Xtra quick trip to the Supermarket. Also gave me a chance to have a play with the just released MSS6X Flasher. Gave it a big tick.

    Took the plunge, 14T comp wheel with 9 blade inconell turbine CHRAs. Upgraded larger thrusts, bearings, collars etc.

    New M8 art car, spotted in my lounge. Unfortunately its owner didnt option the carbon brakes as they were a girls colour. and blue is a boys colour.

    The other option would be going to individual throttle bodies. The intake on the M30 is not great, in both looks and performance.

    Especially if you're going to drop $15k on it like some have suggested. Unless you're doing it for love, there are better options out there. Or like me your plan is to just dump some boost into a stock one and away you go.

    a lovely engine in some ways the old M30 but it is prolly purely down the the innate characteristics of a reasonably sized straight six.They just too old fashioned i reckon.I reckon you be far better off with a more modern engine,say an M54b30.The M30 hails from the 60s

    @olaf i did read your earlier post ?. Great topic to study! But i am biased as i grew up with hip-hop. Started in the early-mid 80’s as a breakdancer/bboy. And yes we walked the streets with our ghetto blaster and lino lol! i graduated to djin’ in my last year of college many many moons ago! Hence why i appreciate ‘the mix’ of all music genres, remember house, acid house, trip hop, indie, mainstream ? Hope ‘you’re’ learning heaps and pass with flying colours! Peace, Love, Unity and Having positive fun! Oh and you might find some good insights into Hip Hop from KRS 1 (google and youtube) - a pioneer of the kulture!

    @treone Greg, I'm studying Hip-Hop with my son at the moment for his Sonic Arts assignment with the whole lock-down thing. It's interesting, as my part of Hip-Hop is more around the fringes as I was more into indie, electronica and rock through the 80's and 90's (as well as a long-standing passion for Jazz). Of course, there's a 12" of The Message in my collection. There's a great documentary on Amazon Prime called simply '808', charting the influence of the Roland TR-808 Rythmn Composer on music overall, encompassing hip-hop, dance, mainstream... https://www.amazon.com/808-Damon-Albarn/dp/B06XSNHSY9 And I've found an expansive (and instructional) documentatary series on the history of Hip Hop on Netflix (four whole seasons!) called 'Hip Hop Evolution'. We're working our way through it. Building a working definition of Hip-Hop for his assignment. I'm along for the ride, and learning plenty.     TBH with the cost of head work I would be looking at trying to source an S38. I saw a couple go in the US for around 7K USD. I looked at playing with the M30 to get more power out of it. The answer was always forced induction. I'm running an old MAP ECU 2 piggyback on mine. It made some good gains with some headers and a AFM delete.

    If you spending that kinda of money then a good set of headers, MAF\MAP conversion and a remap are proven and deliver good gains.

    Awesome info to know, and i have been pricing things for years to re-build my M30 engine, A good budget IMO is about 15k as allows for some wiggle room and depending on parts you want to modify/replace more than others. Always shop around and go with people with experience, there heaps of good builders out there The big issue i found in relation to head work was having real evidence with flow testing, found base numbers around but finding reliable after modification numbers is hard...the whole argument why would i give you X if you can't prove the gain. Although i tend to over engineer things instead of keeping simple Good luck

    If you are looking at the 1.4TSI... it's NOT as reliable as the GTI, depending on the model. Certain twincharged 1.4s are notorious for destrying pistons. Make sure she knows that and "makes" you get the GTI. As a former E39 owner, moved to 2x VW Tourans... VW parts are generally MORE expensive too. Weirdly.

    Having had 3 VW GTIs (2x Mk5 and 1x Mk6) over the past few years- I can shed some light on these cars. Both engines are great, very tunable and pretty reliable for the most part (though there are some things to watch out for). With that being said, I’ve never had an issue with either the FSI or TSI engines. The most common things to watch out for include: FSI -potentially high oil consumption (the culprit is usually the PCV system). Easy fix -Dodgy diverter valve. Many upgrade to the revised revision D diverter valve or aftermarket. Easy fix -Carbon build up. Consider walnut blasting the valves around 120,000km -Coil packs and spark plugs fail (tuned cars only). Upgrade to Audi R8 CoP and NGK plugs -Cam follower wear. Check cam follower every 2-3 years and replace when required. Easy fix -Still uses a cambelt. Replace as required (including ancillaries) -Stage 3 (i.e. turbo upgrade – k04 etc) needs an upgraded fuel pump TSI -Dodgy cam chain tensioner (early models up to 09/2012 build dates). Catastrophic engine failure if this goes bad. Not a cheap fix due to labour. -Coil packs and spark plugs fail (tuned cars only). Upgrade to Audi R8 CoP and NGK plugs -Carbon build up. Consider walnut blasting the valves around 120,000km There are other issues that I failed to list such as intake manifolds going bad, cracked intake pipes etc but these aren’t too common… The DSGs are another matter altogether. The Mk6 DSG is better programmed than the Mk5 (blip downshifts, a bit smoother etc) but both can be very temperamental if not serviced correctly. VW requires servicing every 60,000km. If there’s no record of this being done I’d walk away. Make sure you drive a few vehicles to get a feel for the transmission as some might have clutch wear (particularly the imports sitting in Tokyo traffic). If you get a good one- you’ll be sorted as long as you take care of it. They’re great gearboxes overall just a bit hit or miss; shopping around and test drives are key… Finally, 04-08 Mk5 GTIs have hydraulic steering which I prefer over the slightly numb electric racks of the later models. With all that being said, they’re pretty solid cars and I enjoyed my ownership with them. If you have any other questions just ask- happy to help
