Yeah, I did go to a Pick a part but the 4 cyl Air Condensers are too large for the N54. looked on realoem and part numbers are different. N54s and the diesel e90s and e87s have a slightly smaller one.

Great to meet you Dave, and good to finally see the car in person. Extremely jealous of all the goodies you scored with it! Keen to get your thoughts once you get the alignment all dialed in too

You need someone in the car to shake the wheel while on the hoist and check by feel or with a stethoscope

I may be a bit biased but have to say the E39 / E46 / E38 era was a very very good one for BMW design

Gus, got my M20 headers from Raceland, Belgium. Olaf, the bottom unit in pic, is a sample, M42 LHD I think, not sure what is required to make it work RHD, but normally steering shaft and rack are in the way, not sure in an E30 body tho.

I'm keen to swap an m42 into my m40 e30, but am very keen to hold on to my aircon. Will it be possible to bolt the original compressor onto the m42, or is there zero chance the belt tracking will line up? Or is the pulley different or something maybe? Failing that, would a compressor from the donor car work with the rest of the e30's aircon setup? I appreciate any knowledge/thoughts/speculation. Cheers.

Bit of a hiccup with the update. Seems I managed to install Stage 3 without the app making a backup of the stock tune., and now it won't install the update. So I have to find out how to get a copy of the stock tune from xHP. But while I was messing around I did see a post somewhere that says MHD have some updates to their tunes to better match the engine to the trans with the V3 update. So I'll be looking into that next. <=== turned out to be old facebook post from 2017 !!! Cheers...

The water Inlet & outlet fittings on the hose ends often get blocked too

Great memory Glenn, I would be positive that is the case, that is why some of the identification numbers in the parts drawing are "greyed out", there were few iterations of L-Jet, the big metal damper was on the early version, then switched to the later plastic one. If you have the metal one, it is normally bolted to a bracket on that side of the engine bay, possibly off the oil dip-stick bracket? It is more likely to give an issue at high revs I would think as I believe this vacuum is used to advance the spark timing? More revs = more vacuum = more advance on the ignition IIRC. In terms of the idle problem, have you got the wax-stat cold start thing-ummy bobby under the throttle body? These are very temperamental at the best of times and often cause issues with the idle.

From memory the diagram is showing two systems !2 & 16 are both dampers. It can have either/or. 16 is a plastic damper and 12 is a heavier mounted one. I could be wrong. Long time since I worked on these

Awesome, you'll like the results. I found it took me a few minutes to get use to the new pointy front end.

I also started / finished wiring up the engine in preparation for its first start up. A good mate had supplied a patch harness, so with that in hand, a spare accel pedal and the ECU I began to wire it all in. Once done I trimmed the E39 530i loom back to remove the rear O2's (coded out on DME) and the auto trans components of the loom. I'll tidy the loom further and tuck in behind the M3 wiring hardness covers (sitting on the windscreen) once the engine is running. Also put more assembly lube on the cam lobes in preparation and (SHOCK) oil in the sump. Winning.
