Little update after a average few weeks with Covid / getting annoyed with the car. Did a temp fix on the rust - after hitting it with a wire wheel, it went through the metal in a few more places, revealing 3-4 pea sized holes, through to the firewall near the fusebox. Will definitely get properly fixed in the future, but for now, I wire-wheeled it back to bare metal then patched / treated using filler and POR-15. Bit of an amateur-hour repair, but it should delay the rot a bit and ensure my carpets don't get damp - will check underneath again in spring. Found the source of my front suspension clunk too - went away when I removed the swaybar (suspicions were correct) - likely hitting front subframe or transmission guard due to a little bushing play / bar angle being off since it is reasonably low on standard end links. Going to get new poly bushings and billet reinforced brackets and when I reinstall will make sure suspension is loaded and clearances are fine. Interior reupholstering still in progress, hopefully will get it back next week - door cards are getting fresh vinyl as well with the insert stitched in. Ideally would have kept stock vinyl on door cards, but will be the same as the outer bolsters and seat backs, so should tie in nicely.

That will be from the chap I bought it from, the real issue was the seams under the sills... bursting with painted-over rust. Notwithstanding the car drove better for it's spec than any Of the 11 or so E30s I had owned previously, all of which were very good cars. The suspension felt like new.

So e39 m5 ownership can work like a long term rental with some investment on the side?

Looking to purchase a few pieces for my 2005 E91 325i: - Driver side cupholder (curves towards the driver). - Windshield Washer Reservoir Tank. Will have to fit in the engine bay of N52B25 engine (not sure if the reservoirs are interchangeable across different engine sizes). Thanks!

A few years ago I bought this E30 318 from a young chap in Pakuranga with new wof for $5.5k and 5 months later sold it for about $800 after my wof guy nearly died at the covered-up rust all along both sill seams. At $15k now, I wonder has all the rust been repaired? I was ripped off to the point of criminal at the time, hopefully the price now reflects a thorough repair of an attractive car.

Had mine a year, no regrets. Mines a one trick pony roll race machine, but it's fun taking it to track events and beating cars down the straight that cost 10x more. An example, this one's probably only worth 5x more though.

Can’t see that myself, all the BMW OE wheels are exclusive to BMW, so they are tooled up only for the BMW PCD. What that PCD happens to be would make no difference in cost to the supplier or BMW. In fact swapping from 120 to 112 would have added cost in the changeover. If the same wheels were supplied to a number of brands with different bolt patterns, yes possibly, but that only applies in the aftermarket parts.

You can thank vw for that. Personally I don't think fuel economy is the main purpose behind stop/start but more emissions. If the car isn't running then it's not producing emissions and that helps car manufacturers meet the super tough regulations. Joe public doesn't give two hoots about emissions but rather fuel economy which is a handy byproduct and selling tool. Half the duration of the emissions and fuel economy tests are measured whilst the car is at a stop

Stop / start doesn’t make it any slower to get away, you lift off the brake and by the time your foot is on the gas the engine is running, it’s that quick (well it is in a new bimmer anyways). If it’s Auckland traffic, the car behind will be either texting, looking at Facebook, watching a movie, doing their make-up or eating breakfast anyway. Normally takes them ten seconds to realise the car in front has moved, it’s why the traffic is so sh*t.

The video is fake, Americans don't even have 4 cylinder engines.

@jon dee that looks like some 16 year old’s homework. I wrote longer, more detailed, reports when I was an under-grad on industrial placement. Mind you, that was when you had to do some work to get an academic qualification rather than open a box of corn flakes.
