    Been stripping this old girl down as much as I can before it goes into the paint shop on Saturday. I should get most of done, but will leave front and rear windscreen for the professionals. Cant wait to get it back with a new coat of paint, then ill have to put it all back together again

    Shamelessly stolen from another group… NZTA have just been rebranded and are no longer referred to as Waka Kotahi.. They are doing such a bad job on the roads the new name is now Whaka Kartaia !!

    Every Tapley meter ive seen used in NZ is put on the passenger floor (weighted base) and the 30kph test carried out by the tester. Certainly doesn't require 2 people and using it to test a handbrake is not strictly required - inspectors call on what test they use, the above examples are what we'd use as its better and safer on a range of vehicles. Id say they just wanted to drive your car, but i dont like dealerships for anything other than parts so im probably baised.

    It has to be fit for purpose, would you expect a car to break down after 3 days? No. Take it back.

    Haven't fitted them yet but will be running Style 193's on mine, staggered set, ET34 front, ET37 rear. Should work just fine, they're exactly the same offset as my current 17" Style 194's that sit quite well. Can pick up a decent enough set for well under $1k. Quite like the wheels you're running. I was tossing up going for Style 135's but the 193's happened to become available first.

    Indeed! I've been getting some real lowball offers since I relisted mine. Probably just keep it at this stage since the mrs has claimed the X5. Honestly though, I think I'd prefer an auto at the moment.

    I think, to preserve your consumer rights, you should follow this advice. I would ask for diagnostic only, and for the results to be shared also with HellBM, and then I would authorise the specialist to discuss the details directly with HellBM (and ensure you're provided with the *complete* dialogue). I'd ask HellBM to cover the cost of the initial diagnosis, it's starting to sound like they may be responsible for the resolution. Edit: Be warned, you might be expected to return it to the tune you received it in to proceed with any such work.

    Front and rear screens are super easy to do yourself, the trick is not bending the (now unobtanium) chrome / shadowline centre metal clip. Getting them back in... Find someone you hate and ask them to do it 😁

    I’ll make it simpler. Has a component of the car failed after 3 days, having been sold by a dealer who is bound by the Consumer Guarantees Act to provide a good or product that is fit for the purpose for which it was purchased and of quality commensurate with the price paid? Yes. The dealer is responsible.

    Thanks @jon dee, that's the info I'm after. I've only ever seen the Tapley in a frame. I didn't go to BMW for a WOF specifically, I was after the rest of the cars service history and so it made sense to combo them together. Horrible place to be stuck for multiple hours, I had lined up a set of floating wheel centres, an "entertainment" tray for junior and some clothing - but had to pay for the investigation into my handbrake instead. Sitting in the client waiting area and listening to the service agents on the phone to customers I had to try hard not to laugh out loud, pretty sure that every second phone conversation included the phrase "yes that may be expensive, but that is standard BMW pricing". The best one was along the lines of "we have reached four thousand dollars investigating the issue and need to know if you want to go further", that's not fixing thats just working out why it's borked.

    3 days? Of course. That's the whole point of buying from a dealer and not for half the price from a private seller.

    Style 193s (pictured above) fit amazingly well on an E46. And they can be found for quite cheap if you are patient.

    Was a great four days. Spotted a nice phoenix yellow e46 at Te Akau South on Friday and again on the roads around Raglan. There was some lady charging a fiver for ticket holders to enter her official WRC spectator viewing spot - ie. over and above the gold pass tickets etc. Fiver for a car, fine, per person, hmmmm. That was not very team of five million IMHO. I think Jacks Ridge needs a few bridges over the track, that might make getting about a bit easier.

    Pulled apart the whole power steering system last weekend to see what the damage was. The power steering reservoir had a bunch of plastic from the cap in the filter and when I pulled the pump out there was bits of plastic inside the pump, as well as pretty obvious scoring on a lot of the rotating surfaces. I think it's fair to say the pump is shot. I thought maybe the reservoir might not have been OEM hence why it melted but it is the OE ZF piece so it's very strange. Fortunately there was an S54 power steering pump on trade me for $125 which was pretty lucky so I grabbed that and it appears to be pretty much perfect inside. I was worried I would have to bite the bullet on a new PS pump from which was looking closer to $600. I did order a full set of new lines since mine were already weeping and it's something I've been meaning to do for a long time but put off since they aren't cheap. All in I was at just under 800 dollars for all the replacement high pressure lines, hoses and reservoir, not including the second hand pump. Ouch. As far as I can tell there is nothing that 'failed' that would have caused the fluid to boil. No blockages in the cooling line, none of the high pressure lines had collapsed or failed. Really seems like the fluid just got too hot which seems bizarre. There doesn't seem to be any obvious upgrade options for the cooler line which seems like the most obvious solution. It seems like the E9X cars have a beefed up cooler with more fins but they are a totally different design so fitting one to the existing would require some custom mounting. Doable but not very elegant. If anyone knows of something to upgrade there let me know. In other news unrelated to the M3, I picked up something pretty cool for my 'daily driver' alfa 156 2.5 V6. The 3.0L V6 from an alfa 166 is pretty much plug and play with the 156 since they are essentially the exact same engine just bored out and are a nice upgrade for them. They run off the same ECU and map, all that swaps over is the bigger injectors from the 3.0L and that's about it. A 3.0L 166 came up at a scrap yard so I thought I'd go check it out. That weekend I was pulling it lol. Unfortunately someone had already snagged the larger intake runners so I'll have to use the 2.5 ones which will choke the motor a bit but I'll just have to keep an eye out for a set. I hadn't really intended on taking the engine because it's meant to be a daily driver car but when I saw the window sticker on the car saying it had done 75,000km as of mid 2020 I figured I would just grab it. Couple hours later I now have an engine sitting in my garage. I can't believe how good the condition of the engine is. It looks brand new. The internals are perfect as well. The original honing on the bores looks untouched which is hard to get a photo of but the crosshatching is perfect. I will do a full gasket set, replace the rod bearings and a few other parts that are easy to get to since I have it all apart already and they aren't so expensive. But I'm pretty blown away with the condition since it cost me less than 300 dollars. Love it when a daily driver turns into another project... But it should be pretty cool when it's swapped over.
