Concur. In our experience with M cars for example the overall condition is vastly superior to the average NZ new examples available for sale. And, full service histories in the glovebox too. albeit in Japanese. Same with the UK imports we have, vastly superior condition to the NZ new examples when we purchased them. 1989 E30 325i MTech 2 Super fun car to drive always turns heads Wof and Rego. The coupe features the following: - M20b28 stoker built by Ray at HellBM -Genuine Mtech2 body kit - Getrag 260 gearbox - Racing exhaust headers - New shifter linkage bushings (Garagistic delrin) - 17’ Alpina style wheels - Smiley headlights - Bilstein suspension - LSD - New Cambelt & Water pump - New ancillary belts - Bluetooth and handsfree head deck - Premium rear speakers (rare) - Sports seats - Map light - Shadow line - Alarm and Immobiliser (few spare keys) - Oem front tweater pods - Slick top roof (no common rusty sunroof issues) - Personalized Euro plate - Electric front windows, rear pop-out windows (functioning) Please note that this car has been re shelled into a rust free body (prior to my ownership) Priced accordingly. As expected with a car this age it does have a few minor imperfections (cometic) few tears on front seats, paint fade on the roof, clear coat peal on the spoiler, would not require too much to get it to show car standard. This coupe has been an absolute joy to own and has severed as a reliable daily, always ran on 98 octane. Hoping someone will continue to appreciate and enjoy this great classic! $30,000 Proof of funds required prior to test drives. Located in Pukekohe

Yes, for anyone in Auckland experiencing this fault, Karl at AAutomotive in Archers Road Glenfield is able to sort it. Was a faulty TCM mechatronic unit which at full replacement is around $7k-$8k... but thankfully can be repaired in Auckland for a fraction of that with a 20000km/12mth warranty

Seeing this post makes me realise how much I miss mine, best family car I have ever owned by a long shot, even the wife, who hates big SUV's loved the thing, they hide there size so well. She went from not wanting to drive it when we first got it, to having to pry the keys out of her hands anytime I wanted to drive it. I think the next family car upgrade I will go back to another X5, maybe a B58 engine as the last hurrah for petrol engines.

Hey, thanks for posting. I'm really enjoying the X5. One of the first things I did was replace the grill. The factory one was just ugly as you say. I retrofitted Android Auto/Carplay myself with an Andream mmi unit. It works really well and uses the iDrive controller rather than a replacement touch screen. Having used Android Auto with a touchscreen in my Passat, I prefer using iDrive in this car. Partly because of where the screen is mounted being just a tiny bit of a stretch, but also because I find I can keep my eyes on the road more as I don't have to look at the screen so closely to touch the right spot. I just have to glance at it briefly to see when the correct control is highlighted. It's maybe a smidge slower to navigate but feels much safer. The car is great to drive and really is a jack of all trades. We towed our caravan 3,000kms with it last month on a holiday from Auckland down into the south island, down to Arthur's Pass and then back up the west coast. It tows so effortlessly. I've had it a little bit off road here and there. It's definitely not a great off road SUV but it's ok to get you out of trouble or along the odd back country track here and there. I wouldn't want to take it proper offroading, especially with the factory wheels and road tyres, but that isn't why I bought it anyway. It goes really well and is quite economical on fuel. It can feel a bit heavy and big on tight twisty roads when trying to press on but once I got the hang of the very different handling from all my previous cars, it is possible to make alarmingly quick progress! I also recommend getting a coding app and doing a little bit of coding to change some of the more annoying "features". Like remembering the Auto start/stop setting on start-up so I don't have to turn it off every time I start the car, remembering the AC settings when the car is switched iff so I don't have to turn off AC everytime I start the car if I don't want it on, adding in towball zoom on the reversing camera as I have a non-factory towball etc. I also got the Msport logo for the idrive start-up splash screen turned on and messed about with the active driving sound settings a little. I know it gets mocked a bit, and rightly so, but now at least it doesn't sound so fake when I put the car into sport plus. Anyway, it's been a fun few months with the car so far and I've put 10,000kms on it ready. Here's to many more enjoyable kms... Check out the cheeky Kea on the roof racks in the first pic. I managed to avoid them tearing the car apart fortunately.

I, too, am tempted.. even though it's not local. Would some one local like to have a look at it for me? I spoke to the seller, he's hoping for $6k so... hmmm.

Different experiences. There's certainly plenty of ratty, smoky, Japanese imports. I just don't buy them. Off the top of my head I have had at least 4 Japanese imports that are many years old with various mileages but appear to have just rolled off the factory floor. Usually within weeks of them being here in NZ they scratched in multiple places.
