  1. I dont know what sort of suspension it has, But if it is a Semi-Trailing-Arm adjust it by slotting the holes. Vertical slots for camber on the outside, and horizontal slots on the inside [ do it this way to keep the wheelbase standard for wheel fitment in the arches] After slotting the holes fit washers to the bolts that can be spot-welded after a wheel allignment [ for positive location] This is the standard "Cowshed Engineering" that is used to repair Rally Cars with their infinitely adjustable wheelbases [ they continually get shorter thoughout their racing lives ]

    M50 2.8 Swap

You need to convert it to OBD-1 to get rid of the EWS so the thing will start. try and find a Vanos loom and computer of a 2.5 engine M50 . they usually have the Bosch 512 DME which is more tunable than the Siemens unit that the 2.8 usually has. there are plenty of cooked 2.5's floating around to get the bits you need
  3. They are a Potential Collectors Item [ especially at the rate they are rusting out ] They are also enviromentally friendly [ Bio-degradable ] Seriously all cars with a "racing pedigree" will be a enthusiasts car someday. E30's with group A, E36's with BTTC etc M3's, Schnitzers, & JPS BMWs will always be more desirable [ then motorsports , & most coupes ] All cars go thru a 20year price slide then the perils of age make them scarce , and they slowly become collectible E30's are at the bottom now and will appreciate slowly in about 3years time All cars except the Austin Allegro

    Tractor Pulling

It's great to see the "Good ol' Boys" have another choice in motorsport apart from NASCAR which stands for "Non Athletic Sport Catering for American Rednecks" Tractor pulling is big in Scandinavian countries [ maybe they want to be Beer Swillin' Rednecks to ] When they blow their Engines Up they do a decent job of it. Tractor Blow Up
  6. Chuck the correct box in it. All BMW 'Diff' speedo drive measures Axle speed [ thats why swapping ratio's don't alter speedo readings , but wheel sizes do ] The Gearbox speedo drive measures Driveshaft speed , by the time this is all connected up and recalibrated you could have spent a bit more $$$ for the correct gearbox
  7. You dont really need a write up. It is all bolt in. The shifter boot clips in, the clutch pedal goes on to the stock brake pedal hanger etc the hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder is in place [ covered with a chassis plug ] the bracket for the shifter is already welded in etc The only bracket missing is one that holds the clutch hydraulic hard line to the firewall [ not really needed ] The wiring can be a bit daunting to a novice. You will need to wire in the reverse switch from the gearbox back to the plug by the Auto shifter [ if you have reverse chimes they will still work OK ] you will need to run a wire from the starter [ key ] to the same plug [ yellow/red at key to brown at the plug ] to bypass the starter inhibitor switch . Don't try to bridge the switch if you have cruise control, as the computer will think the car is in neutral all the time. Then unplug the Trans computer and the trans light on the Instrument Panel. The plugs that went to the Auto trans were sealed with a bit of silicone to keep water out.[ they are wired into the main engine loom, so a short-out could create problems ] All very simple The hardest part was removing the old auto plus all the Oil cooler lines. I used the BMW dual mass flywheel, because the are absolutely smooth and dont shudder in traffic [ the dual mass clutchplate doesn't have center springs ] If you need to chat about this pm me and I'll give you my phone number

Below is a Sample posting I found on another Forum about ID'ing a JPS E30 Basically the JPS replicas were badged up from a standard car as a limited edition [for the public] So just put a standard gearbox in your car and enjoy driving it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The JPS cars were built by the factory as stock cars. As they rolled off the production line they were picked up by Frank Gardiner (i think) who turned them into the JPS spec road cars. I have been to BMW and taken my VIN number and my car came up blank. This is because the cars were done up as JPS cars after they came off the production line. Its almost impossible to tell from the VIN or Chassis codes if its a real JPS or not. Your best bet to telling if its real or not is 1) The JPS Badges located on the rear pillar leading down the the boot or on the front quarter panel. 2) Some mild engine work (nothing serious, just more potent than a stocky 323i) 3) Optional 'alpina' style 16'' wheels with the alpina logo replaced by the JPS symbol. Or the stocky 15'' wheels but with a painted gold centre 4) Factory Schwartz black body 5) Gold pinstripe 6) Seats may have JPS logo on them but that isnt a good indicator
  9. The waterpump has to come out to replace the seal , so replace the pump. On my E36 I paid $80.00 for a new one. [ an E30 shoulb be similar ] Ring Muzza's waterpumps on Neilson st , Onehunga [ he's one of the best around, pricewise ]\

Are you referring to a JPS E30's that Frank Gardner had build, or some black E30 with JPS stickers There is a huge difference between the two The Gardner JPS E30's ran a works "group A" Getrag . $10K is about right for the box If this is what you have blown [ assuming it is original fitment], get a gear cutter like PPG in Adelaide to repair it If it is a replica, chuck a slushbox in it . spend your money on booze, and tell "war stories" to drunks
  11. Been there, with a E34 box . I ended up selling the whole E34 manual conversion because it wasn't worth it. the E34 ZF box is O/D 5th , the E36 ZF box is 1:1 5th. [ they are a different animal ] I ended up buying a complete E36 manual car [ with a fuct engine ] and swapped everything. It is very easy to do, it took me about a week, after hours, in my driveway, in winter. the hardest part was threading the clutch hardline behind the engine [ bloody RHD ] I posted a complete E36 conversion on the forum about a year ago [ for a friend ] he never got a single reply.
  12. Hahaha! The laws of nature. When you are not allowed it , you want it more. The allurement of danger [ or risk ] will always attact us away from our sedentary lives No wonder the establishment can't stamp out those "Evil Boy Racers" Clarkson is a better role model now. What pisses off most people is the fact he never got caught, It's all by his own admission

Good advice, Chuck a Straight-cut gearset in . Simon Pfitzner [ PPG] supplies all the NZV8 boxes. It'll be fun. A dog-shift box clunks around a bit if you are trying to cruise with a "hunting" cam [ they are designed for wide open throttle or hard decelaration ] For the street buy a brand new Tremec TKO, on Lexus V8 conversions they use a machined adapter plate that bolts into an Auto Bellhousing [ can anyone confirm whether a BMW bellhousing unbolts from an Auto trans ]
  14. Anybody that buys [ or invests ] in anything that requires a price movement is a speculator. whereas a "dealer" which is the category that I place Oil Co's in, trade on present values. eg: they sell oil at a given price, but buy it for less [ even if prices stay the same ] Ron, you are correct. USA is the biggest culprit . The country was built on greed and guns. The wankers will tell you USA was built on overcoming opression [ British rule ] This was actually said to me by a Black American once, and they think islamists are fanatics. Like I said, the real crisis is in the financial markets ,which is overflowing into everything else. China is starting to feel the pinch now, When I was over there in January the poverty & unemployment was everywhere. In Beijing there was a huge slump in residential property values. Urban dwellings have a 80% owner occupier rate in China which is higher than NZ [ only 15% have a mortgage , which has stalled residential sales ] I heard of a Bank doing mortgages at negative interest [ obviously subsidised by the developer ] Our economy runs [or is propped up ] on credit

Just clarify what you are wanting. A dogleg box [ which is the shift pattern of the BMW "close ratio" gearbox ] or a Dog box [ a real fun non-synchro-smash racing gearbox ] At $10K you are talking a race dog box eg: Quaiffe , Saenz , G-force , Hewland etc a Jerico 5-speed is very rare
  16. Hey Wayne , try and do it the easy way. On a M50 - M52 engine there is a large nut on the waterpump pulley 32mm and L/H thread. You will need : A dozen cans of your "favorite drop" A 32mm open end spanner or a 1-1/4 imperial will do A hammer A trusting mate [ or a pissed mate will do ] Get your mate to hold the pulley around the belt as tightly as he can, with the spanner on the nut give it a twack with the hammer [ not in the Gus fashion though ], It should then come undone as a complete assembly, real easy. Now you have plenty of time to consume the leftovers from your favorite drop [ depending on how much your mate drank for bravery ] Seriously though, just crack it loose with a hammer and undo it [ they are not that tight ]
  17. Hahahahahaha! The first time I read it. I hope it was for real because I was just starting to restore my faith in humanity when little gems like this crop up. I wonder what the bore was like after? All joking aside I remember [ back in the late 60's ] watching my Old Man running-in an engine by slowly tipping a lid full of 'Brasso' down the carb at fast idle. The thing nearly seized then when the revs picked up, presto! instantly run in. He was a reasonably competent man with mechanics [ so even experienced people can get these weird ideas now and then ] As for porting heads, check out "brzezinski racing products" at www.castheads.com These boys are sand blasting and 'acid' porting experts They have been helping people do some cheating [ I mean innovation] for years. Just what you need for a stock standard engine [ E30 series haha!]
  18. Like our Banks, Oil companies are just "middlemen" in the equation. Adding a percentage to the value They have to source their raw materials from a supplier [ usually a politically unstable OPEC government ] which will only accept US$ [ which is falling in value because of a banking crisis , so they try and recoup spending power ] Because Oil has increased in price, our GOVT has also increased it's tax take [ it is a fixed percentage ] If we were totally successful in boycotting BP ,there would be one less competitor in our market [ we all know a 'monopoly' is a fair system. haha! ] The oil co's cannot buy or refine enough of the stuff, China is now part of world demand yet only 4% of their population have cars and increasing [ USA, Europe, Aus & NZ is closer to 80% car ownership ] What will eventually happen is economic downturn in the West, which is the opec & china's biggest market. the on flowing effect will slow them down as well.[ China is already showing these symptoms ] so eventually demand and supply will equalize, and the free market will stabilize itself. [ all this because our source of cheap money started to dry up ] So if you don't need it , then dont buy it. If you do, then keep buying it. Incidentally, if that stupid chain letter was successful anyone 'promoting' it could be prosecuted by the commerce commission [ a restrictive trade practice under the fair trading act , which work for monopolies as well ]
  19. Do you want a sensible aproach that'll get close to 250hp , your $10 grand should leave plenty of change. Buy this on trade-me : http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=155709586 thats a M54B30TE shortblock , I believe the head has been "accident damaged" then go and buy a M50B25 non-vanos complete engine with loom and DME [ approx $750 ] Head gasket $125.00 Head bolts $50.00 New waterpump $85.00 Skim the head $60.00 Then swap the whole top end over to the M54 shortblock. [ or rotating assembly into the M50 engine, as I've done ] You'll end up with a 3.0 engine with the 2.5 intake , Bosch DME [ tuneable ] OBD1 , dual valve springs & higher lift longer duration cams. Add to this a good set of headers, move the intake cam to the exhaust and get a new custom intake cam. If you can do the labour yourself this should about $3,000.00 and get close to 250hp and be reliable in traffic My advice: priceless Haha!
  20. From what I've tried to decipher out of the bentley manual. the E36 picks up the RPM signal from the Crank position sensor on the front pulley [ toothed wheel ] what Engine have you got ??
  21. I've met a few politicians and actors , but I don't place any celebrity value in their occupations [ it is all smoke and mirrors ] sportspeople and business leaders are worthy of celebrity value. my list is mainly around motor racing circles: [ some are now pushing up daisies ] Jim Richards , Denny Hulme , Alan Moffat , Peter Brock , Jason Richards , Paul Radisich , Greg Murphy , Ayrrton Senna , Mika Hakkinen , David Coulthard , Stan Fox , Mel Kenyon , Parnelli Jones , Dan Gurney , I could keep going here. most racing drivers are usually humbled by their fame [ it's only sponsor demands and media that push them to celebrity status ]
  22. Hey , I just want to give a big "Thank You" to Jochen for all his help. Problem solved [ with a bit of knowledge ] Thanks again!

  24. I am looking at swapping the M50 engine in a E36 The engine I'm swapping in is a large displacement non-vanos M50 what are pins #7 and #8 on the engine loom for? [ pre-1992 loom] The engine being removed is a M50B20 vanos what is pin #7 on the Engine loom for ? [ 1993 loom ] On the car side of the connector both pin #7 and pin #8 are redundant [ but are there on the engine side of the connectors] Can any one provide an answer [ or a link ] preferably with a connector diagram. I can't find it in the bentley manual Thanks Kerry
