    Quick rant thread.

Naa, put crocodiles in it and call it a moat!
  2. You may want to check about milage sync with the LCM... If you use a new cluster without syncing it (the odo) to the rest of the car you'll get a tamper light on the cluster that can't be extinguished. No problem if you're only using that cluster to test but I'm not sure what happens if you don't sync and then put your original cluster back in. You'd hate to trigger a tamper on that and have to get a new one! You may find it's not an issue but I'd recommend checking that out before you start (if you haven't already). If you do need to sync then the highest milage will be used so you need a cluster with lower milage than your car.
  3. Can confirm: Windows/sunroof close works here Fuel cap latch lock works here Indicators don't seem to work here in all cars (not restricted to BMW's) ? My M3 has heated mirrors, door locks and washer nozzles, not sure about the 328 (ex. Japan) Dash test works here Not mentioned in vid: OBC test mode Digital aircon diag mode Fun 'easter eggs' for a 90's car.

When are you getting the hoists installed Chris? I'll be there the following day...
  5. Oh, don't get me wrong, I would have been happy for them to do it but they refused unless they're supplying the parts. I wasn't talking about a hypothetical blow smoke up their arse situation... that would be a waste of everyone's time, mine included. Sorry if I left that impression, unintentional.
  6. I wouldn't have thought asking for a quote from a BMW dealer to fit a BMW part to a BMW was a waste of their time. Each to their own I suppose. You guys are all mean. I'm getting used to it but it isn't a good look for new members.
  7. Okay, so the court in Auckland actually agrees with me (or I with it). I'm amused that people actually liked your post. ? The Maserati owner used the wrong (grade) oil, against the manufacturers recommendation and you're doing your best to screw yourself if you do that. Now, if he'd used (or rather if the shop used) Fuchs 5w40 as opposed to 5w30 then the article implies the court would have ruled differently. And I say fair enough. NB: I am surprised the 30 v 40 thing made a difference in such a short timeframe and actually think the story sounds like BS - "shaking, rattling" after a month? Unless he had 40 track hours in that month that sounds pretty implausible. You could use olive oil for a month without your engine shaking apart.
  8. Very happy with the eBay lip spoiler I got for the 328. It was pre-painted and the colour match was fine, adheasive is still stong after 2 years. Wasn't expensive and I apprecaite the look.

    ENGINES

And, umm, pictures of your Schnitzer's please... !!!
  10. Recently it seems that it doesn't take much for people to get really upset around here... Answer to your first question (warranty) = don't risk it, do everything by the book and pay the price or be prepared to be disappointed. Second question (supplied parts) = it doesn't hurt to ask, I've been successful with supplying my own parts (by prior arrangement) with Bellars (North Shore), BM Workshop (Grey Lynn), Kayne Barrie (North Auckland) and a couple of other randoms. I've been turned down at every BMW dealer but that doesn't surprise me. As for advice, I tend to value it based on the amount of time the professionals are prepared to give - if I get a short or curt answer I assume it's BS, if somebody really spends the time to help me understand why something costs what it does (and it makes sense) then I value that highly. As a result I've spent thousands at each of those places I mention above and have zero regrets. Edit: it's fun to get a quote for a fitted part from a BMW dealer here in NZ then ask if they'll fit exactly the same part, brand new, if you supply it ex. BMW AG with the BMW label attached (for half the price). Watch them try and wriggle out of that one... they won't fold though, they just won't do it.
  11. And it looks good great without a rear spoiler... I wouldn't be in a hurry to buy one tbh.
  12. Pulled car apart, didn't see subframe damage. reassembled car. ?‍♂️
  13. What happened? As I said above, if the manufacturer says you have to use a specific oil then you'd be silly to diverge from that advice. But this is highly unusual and in all other cases they're simply looking to line their own pockets. Example: BMW mandated 10w60 Castrol TWS (which you couldn't buy from a regular store) for e46 M3's after they realised they'd designed the engine poorly... now, you'd be stupid to use anything other than 10w60 having received that notice but I find it hard to believe you'd be on the wrong side of the courts if you used Shell 10w60 instead. So yeah, what happened with the Maserati???
  14. That "article" and the "Catalog Manager" are both useless. A lower viscosity winter weight offers no net benefit unless your climate demands it (well below zero), indeed it can even make you worse off. Nobody should ever listen to a vehicle manufacturer about oil unless they specifically tell you something will break. Listen to the oil people instead.
  15. I wasn't suggesting you were confused but it's undeniable that there's room for some confusion. Does BMW still issue approvals for new Castrol lubricants? My understanding of the previous Castrol relationship was that only Castrol lubricants were "approved" and assumed the same with the new Shell relationship (i.e. new Castrol oils couldn't get "approved" status), is that not the case? NB: I'm excluding silly "Long Life" "approvals" from this, industry standards trump OEM waffle here.

    Quick rant thread.

Yeah, they said that ^ about Sydney 24 months ago... ?
  17. No, I didn't think they were using 4 year old stock... ? And whilst I don't dispute your research it's difficult to know what to make of it. BMW officially moved to Shell years ago (and made a big song and dance of it, as did Shell), I can't imagine the circumstances (or supply chain) under which some dealers still use Castrol. Seems to me to be some confusion that BMW should front-foot to clear up. If your oil cap says Shell and the dealer uses Castrol what do you do? Although I agree with you at the end of the day oil is oil - "OEM approved" is just marketing BS. But some people do care...
  18. Welcome Hare, sounds like an interesting project... pics? We love pics! ?

    The Beast

Yes, understood Allan. I just don't think it looks any good as a private yacht... far too industrial for me. It must be running very light with that draft, I assume no interior fit out yet, do you know?

Rig tender - sure. Private yacht - wtf?
  21. Late '96 on was the 3.2 and that comes with different suspension geometry although I thought that was limited to the top mounts, kingpins and arms. So I can't tell you if/why shocks/springs/bars are different on the Evo... but if Bilstein or Eibach have different part numbers then I'd defer to them and select accordingly.
  22. Parents should have taken it to the dentist when it was young. Too late now, permanently disfigured.
  23. I'm pretty sure they're not vert specific in case you needed to know. The Ultra Racing ones sold here in NZ are perfectly fine (although they're probably made in China). If you want to go full on then Rally Road in the US sell the best available (but it's expensive). Avoid one that has any hinges. Also, if your 328 doesn't have a cross brace (under the engine) then get one of those first.
  24. I'd think the owner would negotiate with serious parties, we were just joking around about not having enough. But either way, +/- it's CSL money.
