Recommendations in Wellington for Diff rebuild service?
Kodachrome replied to Kodachrome's topic in General Discussion
Shipping a whole diff would be a bit $$ when it's not really that specalist a task! I'd love to buy a complete unit in NZ tho! -
Looking at getting a new diff for my e28 (with M54 swap) and the price to import a complete unit, remanufactured ($4k) or even well used ($2k) is too high. Want a taller diff with LSD. So was looking at getting the following from DiffLab.co.au: https://www.difflab.com.au/products/bmw-188mm-diff-rebuild-kit https://www.difflab.com.au/products/bmw-188mm-210mm-differential-bolt-set https://www.difflab.com.au/products/bmw-188mm-lsd-4-clutch-2-way-45-45 https://www.difflab.com.au/products/bmw-188mm-ring-pinion-293 And then getting someone to gut and build into my existing housing. Ive swapped a Ring and Pinion before with some help and didnt find it a fun experience. ( 😛 ) so would rather get someone competent to do it, ideally just hand them the car and get it swapped. Any recommendations in the general Wellington area?

Didn't end up using them for my m54 project. Stubby, tubular type. Price $150 plus postage. Located in : Wellington

I think Mercedes and Audi are doing a better job of integrating display's, BMW have taken a bit of a clinical approach. I was thinking of the Etron before we got the Tesla, would be interested to see how it compares to the iX.
-
I'll have to look again, I checked it for something as simple as the Maf swap and found it gave 3 conflicting replacement guides, all labeled 760li!
-
I got access to the NewTIS Repair guides but not finding them as good as the older BMW manuals. Is the workshop manual different? A link top download would be amazing!

Ah yes, the infamous stratification wheel, its caught me out before, sadly though in this case I had it set to Hot already. I agree the Heater Valve is probably the issue, but Water Pump is more a scheduled maintenance concern!
-
Aka the 2009 F02 760Li. Its great, but I just had a poke around the engine bay... man these things are crammed and alien looking! I can see some minor weepy plastics and lines for the cooling system but I cannot see: - MAFs ( I change these on every car I buy thats like 100k+ km) - Aux Pump (interior vents dont blow hot air..) - Water Pump - 3rd water pump, for turbos Man it goes though, such a fantastic car to drive and be in.
-
I had to double check the dates on this thread! So 2009. 😛 If fuel costs are covered, why are you getting a diesel? Apart from the fact you introduce swirl flaps, turbo issues etc, you also get an inferior sound and drive and dump toxins like NOx all over country. I think they have their uses, but this moderate, expenses paid commute doesnt seem like one.

Did Ryan in Brisbane follow through? I know from selling cars here with interest from Oz that even with best intentions it's a painful and expensive process on their side that frequently ends up with them bailing.

True, and I too love a fast wagon, but do I love it twice as much?

So its around GBP35k in the UK, $68k here. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?sort=price-asc&postcode=ll652yh&radius=1500&make=BMW&model=Alpina D3&include-delivery-option=on&price-from=500&year-from=2016&minimum-badge-engine-size=3.0 With Import Duty and GST, lets say around $80k here, landed. He wants a 50% uplift on that actual cost and thats not even a fair comparison as in the UK it had a 12x larger market, a market that likes/liked/incentivised diesels and a more affluent market. Its a hard sell in NZ on all levels. "Yes. A very attractive price given the original cost and the cost to bring one of similar age and mileage for offshore today. Try ordering one from the Australian Alpina agent. " Right. The "original cost" has little to do with the current cost on a rapidly depreciating asset like a car. Given its still valuable but that pitch and price makes him look foolish/toolish. Though he only needs one buyer.

Sounds good! I flicked through the build pages, couldnt find mention if they fitted the E46 M3 LSD? Presume they did!?
-
That is just awesome. If the crypto markets recover a bit more, Ill be in touch! Exhaust wise, how noisy?
-
I figured this out, it's a 3 pin connection like the e24 and w12 in my early e28. Black is tacho. White & black is presumably econo guage.

Just got my M54b30 powered e28 on the road, couple of small bits left. One of which is the tachometer. I just need to connect the m54 to e28 harness engine speed wire to Pin 1 of c104, according to instructions. Rhd car, where is c104.. Lot of wiring going on in my glove box!

Man thats nice I really need to get some proper E28 seats for mine! And probably an LSD too.
-
Ill be the first to admit my sample size was probably too small, I was recalling 2 or 3 that were near or above $20k. Ironically, Im usually the one trying to convince people to stop paying and inflating the E30 tax and buy a 5 series instead too, so I agree with you there on your price suggestion.

I dont need anything to back up an opinion but I do have a rational; that the $10k+ and 20k+ for the older M30 block in the E34 is overpriced. Sure, 3 to 10k maybe fine, have at it. I've had the M30 and have had the M60 and the M50 (and soon an M54) in the E28 and many, many E34s. I grew up with E34s in my family. The M60 is simply a beautiful engine, in power delivery, smoothness (even though its a V8) and sounds good too. The M50 is just a nice overall engine, a huge quality of living increase over the really old M30. The 535i "shitting all over the M50" (I never mentioned the M20, equally archaic, not sure why you mention it? ) I presume you mean in terms of torque and power? Yeah, sure, but in practice the lightness and comparative freshness of the M50 in a 525i is nicely matched in the E34. Its a more modern engine for a more modern BMW. But I don't really care, I'm not a major fan of the M50, its just a sweet spot overall. A well setup M50 e34 is a nice handling, driving car. The M30 is fine, but I've never been enamoured with it. I think the peak E34 is the 540i and I think the M30 has a lot of respect/fan service but IMO is overrated. I also think most of the 540's here have been ruined by idiots but that's beside the point, in stock form it was excellent. I don't think the M30 535i is bad, I just dont think it compares that well to the V8 for similar prices. Being "designed in the same decade" doesnt really make cars similar, at all. Have you driven an E28? I have one, but christ its basic. The E34 is nothing at all like that. I also don't think the statement is even correct, given the E34 was developed from '81 and launched in '88.. the E28 is a 70's design (with a mild refresh in the early 80s, kinda) with similar'ish suspension but inferior and older.. so Im not really sure what you are on about there.
-
The E34 is not at all like an E28!? The E28 feels way older, way lighter and way rougher, ie, it feels like a classic. The E34 just feels like an older "modern" car. Also the E34 535is is grossly overpriced (at least in NZ), so its not a good value for money proposition anyhow. The E34 525i and 540i were probably the peak E34's, aside from M5's (but even still, 540i vs older tech M5.. hmm). Probably not more expensive (ie E28 parts are cheaper than E30), but less aftermarket/used parts yes. E34 parts are fairly available and it has a bit more of a tuner scene than the e28. The E28 is "slashed" with the E24, not the E34 btw.

Fan shroud solution needed to pass on road compliance
Kodachrome replied to Kodachrome's topic in Performance
Yeah, in future I think thats exactly what I will do. Lots of room there to just drop in a complete electric fan kit and free HP for me to boot. Right now though, my 3D printed shroud will get past this hurdle. Ill screw it to the existing black "lip" thats there and bring the curve/shape out more. Just did a quick print in PLA, will check it and look through my collection of filament for a more heat appropriate one. -

Yeah I was thinking of something alone those lines, though Coroflute seems to be good only to low temps of 66c? -
99.99% complete on the M54B30 into E28 conversion. Couple of bits left, one annoying one is they want a shroud (or should I say, more of a shroud, the stock one is at least partially there, I can't remember what it looked like before) to cover the fan. There is a fan shroud lip on it now, but needs a "hood" about 55mm long to cover the fan blades. Looking for a fast solution, any ideas? Im mocking up a something with the 3D printer now, but thought Id ask here anyhow.

I accidentially ordered two of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/143038655865 Flat black, can be painted or installed as is. Really give the dumpy GT model a more visually appealing silhouette shape IMO. I paid USD $137, anyone in Wellington want it for NZD $120? Pretty good deal and pretty sure none available in NZ anyhow.
