You will find probably find that " inpa" software will be the best software for the price .. Ie it's free. Google for a site to download it.. Install it on a xp pc is best.. You will need a Usb obd2 cable and and adaptor to use with your "older" round diagnostic plug under the bonnet. These are cheap, just make sure it will work with inpa. The software will be perfect for working out your problem. It is very powerful tool once you work out how to use it.. It's pretty straight forward... Or find someone with it already setup on a pc so you can use it.. Let people know your location.. There may be someone local etc.. Good luck..

http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1611782-Guide-to-Buying-E46-BMW-Business-CD53-Alpine-Radios-that-play-MP3-Data-CDs! see above link for info on the e46 radios.. as for the price, I'll sit on $350 for a while.. these units are very expensive and hard to get.. just search eBay etc..

yes, the aux-in is in the std loom plug. it is very tidy, but just needs a light dust off really...! it came out of a 318i. It was a replacement unit for a failed radio. note the build date: 35 week of 2006 !

BM54 radio flattens battery in E38.
Dogballs replied to Chalkie's topic in Audio & In Car Entertainment
The difference is: where you see in pin outs for Radios, it covers both headunits and radio modules...std radio will use 10 for GAL, but a nav radio module it will use 10 as TEL ON.. -

Assuming your car is the 97 740 in your profile... Id be double checking the adaptor harness, I've seen cheap ones wired incorrectly... TAA and TEL ON are not the same..?? if you are getting any V+ on TEL ON - find the source... cause it shouldn't... (without then phone being used of course) if you do have a ULF fitted check the wiring on that adaptor also... check that TEL ON and TEL Mute haven't been mixed up too -
either that or the o-ring / cracked oil filter cap has fixed the problem... !!

I've driven a manual 330cd, and they go pretty dam good!....& still insanely cheap on fuel... if only NZ RUC's weren't so ridiculous! first thing you'd do is change that trim thou... that is a particularly bad wood colour..

The C23 has RDS It has no aux in, no mp3 ID tag function. The best straight plug and play "upgrade" option is a BM24 - best audio quality, dual tuner, but still no aux in or MP3 text etc If you want aux in and MP3 text you will need a late model BM54 (dual tuner) or BM53 (single tuner) this will require an adaptor for the power/speaker etc plug and upgrade the antenna amp to the later fm diversity type (single wire)

Start-up noise: it wouldnt hurt to check the O-ring on the oil filter cap. if this is not replaced or aftermarket nasties are used they will leak air into the system when left for periods of time. ie overnight, this allows the whole system to drian of oil and of course it takes a few seconds for the vanos and lifters etc to fill, and it sounds terrible! Ive seen a few m60/m62 now with this problem - and some which have had the valve guides and vanos units replace only to have the same noises... when it was just an o-ring. its cheap and easy to try anyway... if you are in a quite enviroment, you can actaully hear the air "hissing" in at the oil filter cap after you turn the engine off... -( and no they dont always leak oil out, but still leak air in) anyway its a cool wagon for the right price, but expect it to cost you a bit to keep it going... Id be cautious of the transmission also with that millage if it hasnt been serviced well... I'd be trying to knock 2-3k off that price for a starter, and keep it aside for maintenance..

TMC - does it work for BMW Mk-4 Nav with Aus/NZ CD?
Dogballs replied to Chalkie's topic in Audio & In Car Entertainment
no. - the bmw map discs do not have the TMC info on them. -
If the car has DSC over ASC it will have a steering angle sensor... if the alignment process as "upset" the steering wheel position it can cause significant issues with your traction control. If it moves beyond a certain limit, it must be recalibrated.. Jeff Gray should be able to sort that out..

A guide to ebay Diamond Keys for EWS3 - E46 and E39 relevant
Dogballs replied to M3_Power's topic in Electrical system
thanks Tom for the info on these Keys, I just did the mod that Andy posted about the Japan E46 IR to RF converstion http://bimmersport.co.nz/topic/50157-diy-e46-retrofit-infrared-to-radio-frequency-remote-control/ And with these keys, all is working great.. the guy who cut the keys was all doom and gloom about me suppling the "cheap replacement" aftermarket keys, but after they where done he was very impressed at the qauilty of theses ones - He said most ex china type keys are crap metal etc.. and he was very impressed at the cost landed and the fact they are rechargeable etc etc cheers Dean -

let me know what you have... Thanks

1st noise: a common issue with those motors (X5 also) is if the o-ring on the oil filter cap is not replaced or is a poor fitting after market one, they will leak air into the filter over night and it sounds terrible on the first start of the day.. the oil drains completely out. its a cheap and easy thing to eliminate anyway... even if they are not leaking oil out, they can let air in... oil pressure holds a seal, but leaks under "vacuum" I've seen many miss diagnosed timing chain expensive repairs, that was simply an o-ring.... good luck!

Anyone have any idea how to remove a rounded screw?
Dogballs replied to louistan3's topic in Maintenance
centre punch it off to the side of the rounded torx area, then angle the punch slowly towards the "undo" direction... -
upgrade your jap nav radio to NZ new C23 oceania unit. it has the round pins, with dual antenna connections. $100 will be going on trademe if not sold here within a week..

the ebay one has video in and out, with camera input also. if you are only connecting a dvd player etc you only need video in. (two RCA's- 1x video, 1x audio) the one I can make you just need to insert the wire terminals into the back of the plug... it will take a certain amount of DIY skill.. ( I can help of course) if thats all you need, I can make it for a few beers kindy thing...
