ok so what i presumed was a LSD was infact a locker. first clue was the subframe and diff mount nuts and bolts were hand tight. subframe and axles were dirty as hell yet the diff was spotless which made me think it had been out of the car, cleaned and welded. my plan now is to run with the open diff for a while and wait till a cheap LSD pops up. i dont want to have to pay $700-$1000 for one so i'll join the cue of e30 owners who are hoping to get lucky and pick one up from the wreckers who dont know sh*t about what they're worth. this guy who was a friend of a friend of a friends friend also had a "limited slip differential" out of an e32 735i with the early style hydrolic brake booster. surley im not blind but this one had 8 bolts on the diff output to alxe flange. would this be a 'large' case diff? ie: small case - 4, mid case - 6. does anyone know much about these larger case diffs?
-
thanks guys, i'll give it a go tomorrow and let you know how i get on. otherwise it'll be out with the mig cheers
-
anything to look for with the LSDs eg: wear and tear, missing teeth, spider gears welded? the diff outputs both spin the same way so i presumed it was a slippery, i'll just have to take it apart to double check it hasn't been locked
-
stupid question. is it possible to swap the center of a mid case LSD into the small case of an e30 diff? probably not but thought i would ask. and if not, can you swap to the whole mid case diff into an e30, odviously this would involve altering the subframe. but surely there's a way around that cause didn't some e30s come with mid case diffs? thanks

hahaha thanks for the support guys. definatly want to have it done for the hamilton meet or even any up coming wellington meets. i felt motivated today and made up the gearbox cross member, next step is to hook up all the coolant and vacuum lines, fill it up with fluids, plug and play with the loom and then it'll be skids on! jimmy. at some stage i want to take the car for a tour around the south island, it'll be good to catch up. cheers guys

breather? mine isn't connected to anything. should it be?
-
pretty sure its a 10mm allen key (hex) head. should be able to get it from repco or supercheap. what sort of diff oil are you putting in? where abouts in wellington are you?

spotted an e30 323i hartge http://www.carjam.co.nz/car/?plate=wf2150 driving through karori tunnel in wellington just after work. an older professional sort of looking guy driving it. full kit and badges on it, carjam says its a 2.7 engine so no doubt it would be authentic

when i put mine in i had the hoist on the factory lifting point and an endless chain hooked onto a tab on the block at the back. that way i didn't have to jack the car up and i could get the right angle and pivot the engine and gearbox in piece of p*ss. roll the car back and forth as you need to to get it in. i took off the power steering pulley as i couldn't get it to clear. took me an hour 20minutes-ish by myself. it'll be much quicker and easier if you have some mates helping out. good luck

thanks guys, guess i'll be bypassing the valve then
-
started piecing the engine back together last night, hoses wires etc. and notice two hoses didn't go anywhere as if something was missing. posted a picture, looks like number 11 is missing on my engine. what is this part called? any help thanks

thanks glenn, my tool must be a 21mm then

thanks, i'll go see the dealer. next problem how do i get the old ones out? like i sed, my spark plug socket from my socket set won't fit into the spark plug barrel. kerry how'd you get on with yours? do i need the factory socket extension?
-
how often should you change them? i've heard of people that replace them every oil change/wof. reason being is two of mine are slightly oxidised, engine was sitting for a while before i brought it for my converion. and it seems like one less problem to do later so i'll just replace them all now. but what has stopped me doing this myself is my spark plug socket doesn't fit into the spark plug barrel. do i need the factory spark plug extension? tried my m20 one which doesn't fit either. motor is a m50b25 single vanos. any help please? and when i do replace them what brand do you reccomend? thanks
