what replacement shocks do you have? they might be the bilstein stock replacement shock (they look like stock shocks). in that case you might be better with the ones in there. they should have come with a dust cover if new. try stretching the old one, or run without it for a little while to see if you want to keep the shocks. not a huge job to change it again

easiest just to put it all in, and see how you like it. a 40mm drop really is not very long....i hardly ever touch ground on mine mike - both andys j stocks and mine are like that (essentially same shock, his just valved diff and he has funky inverted rears). my pre FL MS shocks were too, but not quite as thick

that stock strut looks like a stock bilstein/boge gas shock...much thicker. im surprised your replacement ones arent the same size. as long as it has the appropriate threaded collar you will be fine. the spring wont be hard to get on, its stiffer and lower than the replacement. spring pads can be used to keep it in place, but 40mm springs are usually fine. the "mtech" bits are nearly all the same (struts are). only bits diff suspension wise are the shocks/springs, rear sway

the pre FL motronic (not sure about l jet) uses pickup points for RPM and crank angle on the box housing....facelift doesnt need this as they are elsewhere. so the box can be anything that actually fits all m20 boxes seem to be pretty good.

there is a whole spiel you can go into about m badges, but i do agree with the point of view that the m badge has turned from being something special (e30 m3, e28m5 etc) into a marketing tool...where you see it on every other e36/e39 and e46's coming from the factory with them. you can differentiate between the m specced models and the proper m3/m5/m6 but it just seems to dilute the image it holds. but then the whole bmw image is being diluted a little too so i only suppose it is right. thats probably why the tuner companies alpina/hartge/schnitzer do so well, they actually aren't common.

just to chirp in i hate the VTNZ stations...they failed my old e30 on non structural rust. would not explain to me why it was structural. took it to On Road (respectable) and they passed it no problem. was not impressed. was probably just the individual, but i haven't been there since

wide arches? 5 lug? plain badassness over normal e30's sure they aint quick, but so much cooler. mtech 2 is overrated. looks like people trying to make a killing before 20 years is up....i imagine prices will drop after that. no? having said that, there are people willing to pay that price...hell 40k isnt that much for a minter
