Also, lots of underseal scum was flushed away.

Mad_Max 231 Report post Posted November 17, 2019 Exhaust manifold swap on the X5....... found a few issues, namely 5 cracks in the manifold, evidence of the gasket around #4 cylinder leaking at the head (suspect warped manifold), downpipe from turbo wasn't tight at all (I could easily rotate it by hand), and the turbo support bracket - well think that was just there for decoration.......... So new manifold on, every exhaust component got checked (and anti-siezed), new manifold and gaskets installed. Hopefully no more diesel fumes......... And that's one thing on the list of repairs done so far (changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, driver's door handle etc.), still got thermostat and CCV filter to do. Was hoping to do the thermostat today while everything was apart but the weather started to turn.
Mad_Max 231 Report post Posted November 18, 2019 Changed the thermostat........ wasn't anywhere near as hard as I was lead to believe. Just went for a 20 minute test drive, KTMP according to the BC sat around 87°-88°, reaching a top of 91° (outside air temp of 11.5° at the moment). Before, the KTMP would sit around 65° on the average day, getting up to around 72° on a long drive, and only reaching 91° when the outside air temp was above 20°. I believe that's another problem sorted, and better economy will follow with it now reaching proper operating temperature. Manifold swap yesterday has made a big difference, no diesel smell at all, and definitely feels stronger and smoother down low, especially with a cold motor.

I drove around with a busted oil cooler bracket too without knowing it, when I discovered it I realised just how lucky I'd been, losing that would be messy and potentially terminal. Yea third time round! First time I claimed insurance and was $2500 to be repaired. Second time put a wee crack right on the bottom edge and broke a mount for the grill, so not a major. Maybe I need a big alloy splitter and just cut them in two haha

Treated myself too, found some second hand mtech sills for my 335i in great condition from dismantler. Old ones were scratched and rubberery part was hardened and cracked - still have them so I peeled of the soft lip down to the hard black plastic... Doesn't actually look half bad

hunter 408 Report post Posted November 29, 2019 Started experiencing a lumpy idle on start up, intermittent sluggishness when driving a few weeks ago along with some odd gearbox behavior. i scanned the car, got a p0369 crank shaft sensor intermittent code. After some googling and reading ordered a new sensor from Coombes (genuine is best) and it was off to Mosens for fitment along with a gear box flush. Got the car back today, feels like new. So smooth in both engine and gearbox departments. Brilliant!

I would have been silly not to start I'm the corners, so I'm sure I would have. Might have to balls up and lever it off again and reinstall!
B.M.W Ltd 950 Report post Posted November 30, 2019 This replacement is very hard to do without compromising the eurothane sealing compound that seals the screen. The only way to do this without damaging the paint which will start rusting under the seal and without causing water leaks is to replace the seal when refitting the glass with the seal and new sealant which requires removal with out breaking. gjm 3258 Report post Posted December 1, 2019 Gave the Baur a wash. And found a liitle hole has formed in a usual E30 place - bottom of the front wing, in front of the passenger side door. Suggestions for superb bodywork in Hawke's Bay?

BreakMyWindow 1874 Report post Posted December 5, 2019 Gave the car a well overdue workout up through the Mangamukas to Cape Reinga. Nearly used a full tank of gas there and back starting from Paihia.
gjm 3258 Report post Posted December 5, 2019 Took Mrs M's Baur to have the hole in the sill sorted. Could be a while, but the guy overseeing the work was factory trained and has worked on BMWs for over 30 years, and remembers when E30s were new. Sadly, while there, I found that someone has tapped the front bumper hard enough to slightly deform the wheelarch. On the other side to the rust. ? Very unhappy about that. But it too, will be sorted.
Badical 21 Report post Posted December 5, 2019 Swapped out my paddles to some F series ones, I much prefer the OEM look over the aftermarket paddles I had. Also fitted a 1M strut brace, no real change in handling, but it looks nicer. Along with that chucked in an E92 M3 front sway bar, nice subtle change there. Plus while I was down there, noticed my sump gasket is starting to leak, so yay, extra things to fix ?

Badical 21 Report post Posted December 6, 2019 5 hours ago, Navin said: Tell me more about this paddle swap, are the F series paddles a direct swap? Looks great, would love to do the same with mine Pretty easy really. Have a good read of this thread: https://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1358509 Basically, unscrew the paddle assembly from the wheel, unscrew the paddle from the mounting base, remove the plastic hinge pin from the old and new paddles and swap them over and screw everything back together. As you keep the original circuit board base. I kept the rubber pad with the conductive buttons from the f series paddles but cut off the spring guide as the original base has a plastic spring guide and also swapped over the f series spring as it is stiffer. Result is an OEM look and a much nicer feeling paddle actuation. I just bought the replica f series paddles you see on eBay or AliExpress, quite surprised at the quality, then again I wasn't using the circuit board on those ones.
E30 325i Rag-Top 2956 Report post Posted December 15, 2019 Finally managed to get some decent garage time over the week-end after a very hectic number of months. Friday night finished spraying the repaired lips of the Alpina reps from the Convertible ready for new boots on Saturday morning. Silver paint has gone a bit funny in placesa, fingers crossed a good cut and polish with sort that out. Saturday morning off to P&S Autocentre to get the above mentioned new boots fitted, Hankook asymmetrical somethings as Toyo don't offer 205/40/17s. Whils there in amongst the talking rubbish with the GCs in the workshop I cut a replacement section off an E30 donor car thanks to Pete's pick-a-part @P&S. Note to self - need to buy a sabre-saw they are heaps of fun! After chopping the rear quarters out of the E30 race car to fit the FRP panels I had a re-think of how / where to fit them onto the car, so this panel is basically to go back onto the car to replace a bit (too much...) that I cut off. Saturday PM, cleared up and cleaned out the garage to get enough room to start working on the race car again in earnest and put stuff away properly rather than just dumping stuff randomly until it's not possible to move about any more. Started sizing up the FRP panels and the quater panels to be 100% sure where to cut and join stuff. Finished moving stuff around and started drilling out spot welds on replacement panel when the Mrs. informed me she will be wanting the spare garage fridge to be operational for Christmas - that's right, the fridge that had just been buried behind a stack of wheels and tyres, suspension and body parts. Sunday, took the convertible for a spin around the block to start getting ready for new boots and WoF for summer. Whilst it was out of the garage cleaned all the crap off the floor and moved all the stuff out of the way of the fridge. WIth the garage all clean and tidy it enabled me to get my bench pillar drill out to end-mill the spot welds off so as to leave a better finish for welding. Fingers crossed I can make some progress over Christmas hols, will resurrect the race car thread and add some more photos in there!
