Jooles' E31 project log

SJ (EUROHO) fitted the cross pipe for me on Saturday. There was a bit of a hiccup so, unfortunately, it'll need to come off and be straightened (those with sharp eyes will notice the driver's side tips are a bit low) but it has done the business sound-wise and performance doesn't seem hampered in any way. iPhone vid doesn't do it justice but you can hear a touch of exotic now the banks are mixing!

Sounds proper now! :) nice going.

Repinned the broken MAF plugs. Some of the pins just wouldn't budge (even with correct AMP pin removal tool) so I ended cutting the plug off one side. In so doing I must have squished a couple of the pins as they wouldn't stay in the new plug when I connected it. Have fixed it but next time the plugs need replacing, so will the pins. Still, it'll be good for a few years!!

Here's my best guess for wiring colours in case anyone else that has to do this. The wires were old and quite discoloured so please chime in and correct anything that looks wrong.

RHS
1 Yellow/grey
2 Red/blue
3 Purple/white
4 Brown
5 Brown/white
6 Blue/white

LHS
1 Brown/yellow + white dashes
2 Red/blue
3 Brown/purple
4 Brown
5 Brown/white + yellow dashes
6 Brown/grey + yellow dashes

The amount of times the intakes have been on and off I don't want to make it any harder to undo them!! Haha

Ha ha ha Julian.

I should know better than to watch these at work with the head phones on.

When I watched the vid with your Magnaflows I ewwwddd and ahhhhhhdd and all my work mates must've thought I was watching porn cause I got some funny looks...lol. Guess I kinda was..

That sounds awesome. How much were the Magnaflows and where from?

Less than $500 including tips and shipping from eBay. I am hoping to get a set of used Ferrari 458 boxes once I determine whether they'll fit so mine will be up for grabs.

I remember watching a vid of an E38 750i with the most amazing sound. Can't remember what setup they had but the M73 can really roar. If I can find the clip I'll post to your project page.

It's a short clip but it sounds incredible.

If I could get mine to sound like that I'd be very happy.

Thanks. I've got both but has made me think that it might be worth me collating all the 8er stuff I've got in one post.

Been collecting this little lot for some time. A few things I forgot when I did the front suspension and complete rear overhaul. Wish I had the time to do it but I can live without pressing bushings, so letting the pros take care of it!!

Such work is a must on anything thats 15 years old + let alone 25!

A lot of certain people forget this is the kinda work you need to do on such older modern cars. Its not all fun 'n games simply spending ones cash on rims and exhausts :P

Keep up the good work.

Totally. There'll be no visible difference but the handling will be night and day!!

where are those plugs available from, BMW? do you have a part number? i know one of mine are the same condition.

I agree.

just a bigger smile on your face i guess

Definately surprising the difference bushes make. seem to be as good improvement as doing "usual" upgrades like shocks.

Easy!!

Had to get the part numbers from E38 realoem as it had the same plugs. Will dig out the numbers and message you.

Yep! Shocks are already done but the rear is rotting fast so all new bushes will tighten everything up.

Suspension's finally complete. All new front and rear. Sport shocks, csi bump stops and rear reinforcement plates and Eibach springs. What a difference! The old girl feels like new, so much grip in the corners. She's pretty low so the ride's a bit harsher than the floaty EDC but not much different to the mtech II suspension in my old E39 540i. She earned herself some new rubber on the fronts too.

Resulting issues... Not sure I'll be able to navigate my steep drive if I fit my csi front spoiler... Too much low!! And on the odd hard bump thanks to our crappy roads, I get a bong like a check engine. Happened prior to overhaul too. No light so possibly just a loose electrical connection. Any ideas?

I am a numbskull and forgot to use the original shorter lugs when I removed the rear spacers after lowering the car. After a couple of days one of the longer bolts caught the expanding lock on the left side handbrake assembly... And mangled it. Schoolboy error. Annoyed with myself. Lucky it's an auto!

D'Oh! Good on the honesty front though - I wouldn't have told everyone, but you might save someone else doing it B)
