M3AN 4016 Report post Posted May 9, 2021 (edited) But it's so much fun! 🙄 It is a little ironic since so many high performance cars are trending to torque-converter based autos these days. I do agree though that TM could do with some additional transmission options, even 'Sequential/DCT' would be fine. However then of course anyone with flappy paddles would probably choose that option. There is no need for dual clutch when modern autos have gotten that good now. More reliable, easier to live with, and cheaper to maintain. Even the old ZF 6HP in the 335i was really good when reflashed. Its all down to programming now. Tardme does have three options. Auto, Manual and Tiptronic. Problem is 90% of people are letting the rego auto-populate fill the fields, and its causing all sorts of mess. Heaps of autos being listed as manuals because of this. If you’ve ever tried to search for a ‘station wagon’ you will understand as you trawl through 90% SUV’s and people movers, most of which arent even dual listed. That's listers fault though, not Trade Me. The problem TM have never fixed is they don't list "5 series", "1 series" etc as categories, but instead list every submodel (530i) as a top level BMW category. With other Marques they mostly do it the right way and even do it correctly for things like X3's, X5's etc. Does my head in. They're so much more fun, the direct feedback from the shifts is more engaging. I have driven the new M3/4 on track and it has lost some character and fun factor with the auto. For a daily yes, but for a sports car, especially one you'd want to take to a track, the fun factor is much higher with a sequential/DCT type transmission. I've grown to love the DCT since having it in my E92 335i and now my M4. The auto... maybe I'll accept it one day but it puts me off the new ones even more than the big grill. KwS 2425 Report post Posted May 9, 2021 Ill admit, the latest dual clutches I've driven have been about 10 year old DSG and yes, it was great when you were banging through gears when hammering on it, but everything else was full of compromises. Using it as a daily in heavy traffic sucked. Autos are just so much better for everything else, and thats coming from someone that hates autos with a passion.... Don't know what the DSG's are like, but the BMW ones have no issues in daily use. Drove my 335i in Auckland traffic pretty comfortably and my M4 works just as well in town. They make some more noises and you can feel them shift at times, but they're in M cars or options in sporty cars (335i/135i coupes) where you expect to have a little bit of character to it as part of the fun. There is the minor annoyance that it switches between forward and reverse slowly though, like half a second. For a regular daily though where you just want comfort and practicality, yes an auto makes more sense

lord_jagganath 421 Report post Posted May 11, 2021 as a former driver of a diesel DSG VW CC, it was a great box to use, and tractable even at low speeds (i think the programming in my 2011 example was perfect).
hqstu 780 Report post Posted May 11, 2021 I'm lucky enough to currently have three types of transmissions and I love them all for what they are. The SSG / SMG has moved through its product lifecycle in the following phases (IMO lol): Wow, new tech, how good is this... to Actually this is a piece of S%*t... to Actually now this is a real crappy expensive piece of S@*t... to Hmm... it was rather revolutionary in its day... to... It's quirky, and if you appreciate it for what it is, and it's all good, then it's actually quite OK... to... These are fast disappearing and we should preserve the cars that are left... 😁 (many would argue I guess the first phase didn't exist, and the last phase may not either...)
GorGasm 563 Report post Posted May 11, 2021 (edited) SMG3 in the E50 M5 is a bit sh*t. It's not great at low speed or full throttle. The Maser version is a lot better but I think it burns the clutch to smooth out the experience. The clutch also costs a fortune. Both are definitely not automatics in their driving characteristics. What I don't like is when all of the plastic or plasticised surfaces are different colours. I have Lotus White leather but all my plastics - dash, console, seat surrounds etc are black. Perfect for my taste. Someone really knew what they were doing when they specced that through Individual! 👏

No, the centres were for Recaro SR4's so wouldn't fit. Coincidently I've just sold the last 3.8m of the M Rain material I have and it's being picked up in 15 mins. I'll use that money to refurb my Lotus White and then sell the other Vader interior I have.
