So I've been wanting a new project for a while now. Stumbled upon a broken down E36 advertised on facebook. It had broken down at someone else's house, and from what I gather he was told to get it gone. So $300 later and it was mine, being towed back home behind the falcon (short distance and very slowly due to the auto). In the garage it went, and so it stayed for a couple of days. It was starting, but refused to idle. Would run fine with a little throttle, but as soon as it was removed it stalled immediately. So after lots of googling and forum searching, and some helpful suggestions from on here I narrowed it down to most likely being the AFM, or the ICV or both. $21 of CRC MAF and a couple of hours later and I had myself a running $321 1994 E36 318i auto. So the plans from here, slightly inspired by Andy and his $100 compact, are to get it a manual conversion and build it into a club race car, mainly targeting the intermarque sprint series, looking to compete in the first round next year. Anyway, what's a thread without pictures:

There are about 1500 propertys on TM between 300-400k all over the auckland area, your first home is just that, a first home. Its a step on the ladder, it might not be where you want to live for the rest of your life but better than renting and complaining that you can't afford that 900k house. When i brought my first house i sold all my toys, didn't go out parting like my mates, had flatmates (lots), worked around the house building and adding on improvements. I don't think the LVR have helped ether, and i hear through the grape vine that when they are removed all the new/first home buys will rush in and push the cost up even more. And my new CV has just arrived.

Nothing to report. Sorry. Get in, turn key, start, drive... Buy RUCs, put fuel in, drive... Repeat... Another service due in about 2500 miles or so. Just before Christmas, then.

Sounds a little like a justification for the actions taken by the National party, and an upbeat 'prices will rise' diatribe. Which, coming from the MD of Barfoot & Thompson, is to be expected. You could rewrite parts of this to give a completely different slant, by changing just a few words. For instance, "it represents what people with the ability to do so are prepared to pay to obtain the property of their choice in the current market" could just as easily say "it represents what people with the ability to do so are being forced to pay to obtain the property of their choice in the current market." Similarly, the notes around first time buyers could as easily say that ftbs will have to wait a long time before affordable property becomes available in Auckland. For anyone trying to buy a house, the numbers are scary. stuff.co.nz said, around the time the 20% deposit instruction came down (I know there are dispensatons for smaller deposits, but try and get one...) that all it would take is saving for a little longer. Hmm. Let's see... How much can the average person/couple save in 12 months, bearing in mind that at 12% increase per annum (quoted by Mr B&T) the price will have gone up by nearly $50k (based on a $400k property). Obviously they don't need to save an additional $50k - they need $10k more. Not impossible, but frustrating. For reference, Stats NZ quoted (12 months ago, and only provided a mean as opposed to a median which may be more relevant) the average hourly wage at $27.55 an hour, or ~$55,000 a year based on a 40 hour week. ANZ suggest this income (single person, 1 car) could support a $315000 mortgage based on a 5% ($17k) deposit. You could buy something down our way for that, but I don't know what you'd get in Auckland for ~$330k.

+1 for what Allan has suggested. If the seats are in bad shape I've got a simple tool that'll fix it

I approve of this post One can draw alot of similarities between the automotive world and the IT world, and this is another. Much cheaper for the manufacturers to make everything modular. Not necessarily cheaper for the consumer, but at the end of the day, they have to suck it anyway. If you have a Hyundai Accent that needs a new engine, you can only put another Accent engine in, its not like you can put a Toyota engine in and call it a day. Agree, actually almost anything Italian. Possibly has something to do with the fact one looks at the engine bay a lot more too when they are fixing things...... yes went there.

Could be a bit hit and miss to answer with out some more info are the valves new, old have they been refaced along with the seats. Have the valves been lapped in with grinding paste. Could check by smearing the vale face with bearing blue then insert it into valve guide and slam it onto the valve seat this should leave you a mark on the valve seat an hence what contact is being made between the seat and valve face.

i think that was a pretty common way to do it. Close the valves, invert head, fill bowl (usually measured with a syringe) and leave overnight and see if the capacity is the same. Not sure on what liquid to use, have heard water but dont quote me on that. Need something that wont evaporate overnight.

the problem with the plastic covers is that under them its f**k ugly. Car makers no longer give a toss about making it all look good, because they just cover it in plastic anyway.

Certainly agree, I feel like I could tackle many modern cars, but it's a huge barrier to those who've no knowledge. Walked past the Holden dealership the other day and they had a bunch of new commodores in the lot with their hoods up, even with those big wide cars there wasn't a scrap of space and everything was covered by plastic shielding (torx screws the bloody tossers!) I thought getting the intake manifold of the E32 was bad, trying to find the manifold on a 2013 Commodore looked to be a challenge. Not to say new cars aren't or can't be fun, but I think a lot of the new blood so to speak are being actively put off by the unserviceable nature of modern cars. Most major engine work now is no longer performed, it's quicker and cheaper just to swap the engine. Especially in the smaller Asian cars, why bother tearing it down when you can just chuck another engine in for less than a grand?

Airpipes all look good. Car runs exactly the same with the AFM disconnected, I've cleaned it but still no go. Might have to try a known good one, but until then I have to figure out where to find the ICV and PCV now haha Edit: Found ICV, soaked in $21 of CRC MAF cleaner. Re-assembled, starts and idles at 800ish rpm. Purrs like a kitten (with tappety tappets lol)

Still no sign of the new shocks so have been continuing work on getting the engine bay straight. Painted the air boxes a couple of days ago using Krylon Fusion paint (which is awesome and physically bonds to plastic so it won't peel). Came out well. This is what it looked like when I bought it... And now...
