I have written software which can test for failed Vanos or not. I can even measure the actual variance and ms delay in pump pressure. I should probably finish it off for public consumption at some point.

Why? How much ground/time will you gain?! It will all be lost when you get a red light in Oamaru, Timaru and Ashburton (I'm ex linehaul truckie, and I used to get red lights down there ALL the time). If not then you'll get a Fonterra tanker pulling out on you somewhere along the way who are limited to 90k The best way to get around all that is to leave half hr early!

Not the sort of car we see on here so much, although there has been discussion of the F1 BMWs. The Elva Mk8 uses the same engine, but in a very different package. There's a footnote about an Osella fitted with a M12. I found this doc by accident, but it made for great reading. (Well, I enjoyed it!) A touch too big to be hosted here, so I've uploaded to Google docs. Original online doc here: http://vprace.com/press/ElvaMK8-BMW-M10.pdf

Any courier company that sends DG - as long as it's marked as such, and you tell them what it is, they shouldn't have a problem with it. NZ Post have a very large "too hard basket" which lots of things get put into...

IIRC even GT1 can test the vanos to a degree, but all it really is is forcing the vanos to a certain position and making sure it stays there. Its really only testing the solenoids and maybe the piston seals. Keep in mind that BMW only made the solenoid seals replaceable, the actual vanos unit its self isnt meant to be serviceable, so the likelihood of BMW making a test to test the seals in the unit its self is slim. If its broke, bin it is their mantra. 3pedals, if you dont believe the advice you are being given, dont do your vanos seals. Simple.

E36s get a lot of hate, especially the M3. People consider it a 'bridge' car between the iconic E30 M3 and the world wide distributed (North American Market) E46 M3. But there is a reason behind it all .. the E36 chassis and body panels are the first time when BMW actually started further development into proper aerodynamics .. there is a BMW youtube video which explains this. Still .. sad the E36 M3 never got some over flares and special bonnet and grilles etc. Very understated car which suits some and turns others off. Can't complain about the drivetrain though. Many regard the S50B32 to be a very advanced engine for not only its time, but in general .. even after close to 20 years

if you want to go in and inspect, then you might as well replace when you are in there any way, $60 is hardly going to break the bank. little HP gain, better fuel economy. if it doesn't work, $60 is no huge loss, if it does, you will make that many many times over in the next 60,000km or more. it seems a no brainer to me no matter which way you look at it ----- And my other comment: This is exactly why i don't bother with group buys on bimmersport anymore. Some wanker comes in and takes the post off topic. If the group buy is not for you, thats cool, shut the hell up and leave it for the people that are interested.

For a while the drivers side door frame seal has been a bit crap and you could hear a little bit of wind noise, all of the other door seals seemed to be in perfect condition, however the drivers one was worn out. Ie There was about 3 parts of it like this or worse. So I ordered a new one. I peeled off the old one and started installing the new one. It took a bit of effort to get it to meet up correctly, at the start it seemed like it was an inch too long. Final Result,. I decided to take the car for a drive and get fuel, its been sitting unused for a week, it ran like crap and shook, after 30 seconds it seemed to be running better, took it to get fuel, was running fine, scanned ECU, F1 Cylinder 4 Misfire.. Probably a coil, but i'll have to swap it to another cylinder and re-test

Swapped TPS between ASC and throttle (same same piece). BIG improvement. Almost right. Almost.

Nice post ! Well documented. Personally not a fan of t clamps but they are the easiest. Proper solder and heat shrink is best but a lot more work .. Especially if working inside the car !

Guys, my name is Dave and have been a browser here for awhile I thought it was about time I said gidday. I imported an E39 M5 from the UK last year which I am really enjoying after giving it some love. I also have a E90 330d, again has responded well to some attention... some photos under "Giving the new car a spring clean" I enjoy reading about stuff that you guys do with your cars, and photos of progress. Epic! I've met up with some of the Bimmersport members when the M5 guys got together, good blokes too. Didn't make it to the ECC meet but hope to get to the next. Have a great Christmas everyone, Dave

I agree that on certain roads, an open speed approach can work, but for NZ i think they need to focus on a KEEP LEFT on the motorway for a starter and stop getting pedantic on small duration over-speed limit situations (over taking periods). This will allow traffic to flow better, ensure people are more aware of their surroundings, and keep peoples minds working.
