    Ive never been able to work out what everyone is so anal about when a car gets written off and recomplied etc. Especially a car with such minimal looking damage. Would rather this one in a rebuilt state than some shitter that some muppet has owned for 2 years and wanks on about it having a JC sticker and a service history that stopped in 1999.

    Hi guys/girls, Jono here, new to forums, taking my time to look through the topics (love jeffbebe's E31 who must live locally to me as I see it about all the time) and introduce my ride.... Brought this NZ new '91 E30 facelift 325i convertible manual done 165,000kms two years ago sight unseen from Rangiora ... Drove back to Auckland with the heater on full as temp gauge didn't work and some funky steering thanks to the tie rods being wound all the way in one direction (1 turn to lock left, 3 to lock right haha)... I'm pretty handy (and particular) so replaced ALL fluids, cambelt, waterpump, all water hoses, thermostat (old one was fine), temp gauge and adjusted valve clearances soon after getting back. Since then I've replaced the roof canvas and seals (last month, including stripping frame back to metal and repainting; b**** of a job getting the frame re-aligned after removing it) and various bits of trim and assorted suspension bushings... it's a labour of love, still plenty of things I'd like to do... PS: Always on the look out for the removable hard top on the slim chance anyone has one they want to sell...

    Collected my new wheels yesterday 2mths after ordering - happy days! VMR 710 in hyper silver with Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 2's. Will fit them Saturday morning hoping that the sun is shining so I can go for a bit of a cruise afterwards! Is there a break-in period with new tyres that I should be aware of?

    Quick rant eh? I dislike that little triangular bit between the two wiper blades that can't get to. I bought longer blades so the triangle is smaller but couldn't get rid of it completely. Why can't they make those mad looking single blade mechanism on the 90's Merc? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Soooo a few of you know about what I've been up to over the past few years. Embarking on the long road to dis-assemble my live data from the ECU. Brendon and I have finally got to the stage where we are have a working prototype which is very 0.1 as far as hardware design goes. But we will be out at the track day on the 29th running it through its paces. Features so far include .. Real time Data logging of all live values. Much faster than standard BMW diagnostic equipment. Records to SD Card in CSV format for easy import into Excel or other video telemetry overlay programs Real time steering wheel or soon-to-be dash display (optional) Real time warning on critical values and gear position Max values stored and displayed Warm up and over heat warning thresholds and display Analogue values from active sensors EG oil pressure etc Selectable buttons which can remotely trigger or scroll functions Programmable shift light warning system. This is just a taste of the features it is capable of. We are in development of a lot more and will be supporting all popular modern BMW ECUs and control modules. It will also be expandable so you can add some serious motorsport features onto your base unit. The aim is to bring this to market with accessible telemetry and an affordable price. Here is a taste of the working model. Production will be of a lot high quality. Also ignore my tachometer. It reads about 150rpm too high.

    I've used rain-x for years. Great stuff. Started using it in the visor of my helmet. It stopped fogging on the inside and the rain just peeled off the outside. Started using it on my cars and like Graham said, you barely have to use the wipers. Used it to daw a <==B on my work mates windscreen at work so he'd come out every morning and there would be condensation all over the car except for right in the drivers view where there was a huge penis and balls. He thought someone was drawing it on every morning till he started night shifts and there it was in the work car park as well. It lasted for months.. Even frost wouldn't settle on it. Really funny thing was he recently traded that car in so I confessed to him that it was me. His wife thought it was hilarious cause he had ranted and raved at home about the as-hole who was drawing it on every morning.. THen we had a good chuckle about the poor car yard owner who'd be greeted at work every morning by the sight of a huge penis on the windscreen of one of the car in his lot..

    I Bid you welcome, now if you would kindly go onto youtube and search James Blunt You are Beautiful to further allow me to convey my welcome to you and your car. It goes something like this if I remember right.. "You are Beautiful, You are Beautiful its True, I saw you down the road with another man in you, but I have got a plan"... I am not expressing my desire to steal her, Blame James Blunt and my over imaginative brain .

    E39 wipers are great! I get sick, sitting in little Jap car passenger seat with one eye looking out the cleared windscreen and one eye out the wet bit - some of them are REALLY bad! E39 is clear for both eyes, regardless of the side I sit on! Our VW Touran is even better - BOTH wiper pivot on the outside, so the wet triangle is behind the rear view mirror!

    I went to Mark Wade at Wade Automotive in Penrose - he has been building engines for the race industry for decades. A bit grumpy, but very knowledgeable and experienced. No valve work. He checked the valve guides and said they weren't perfect, but not bad enough to need replacing. He checked the valves and seats too, and said they needed a valve grind but I was going to do that anyway. Regarding hydraulic lifters, basically all you are doing is disassembling, thoroughly cleaning them out, reassembling, and pre-priming them. Carbon and sludge gets in them and stops them working properly. I did a lot of reading, and this video was very helpful;

    Cheers guys. Conidering it just ticked over 246k it runs sweet. Doesn't miss a beat. Other than the steering angle sensor it had no other codes come up. Still in a bit of disbelief about how lucky I've been with this considering I bought it without viewing and it was sold to me as a non runner.

    Did they do any valve work, alter Valve stem heights or mix the valves up ? Once again... what repair instructions are you working with ?

    I have a set of Pistons which have had the ring grooves recut, and the valve pockets pocketed further to take bigger cams. You can have them for the cost of the machining (which I'm yet to find out but it'll be bugger all.) pm me if you are keen. They are as good as new.

    Nice car, looks in very good nick and glad to hear it is being looked after. In terms of a hard-top try Ethirty_Andy on here, he has found a contact in the UK and is looking to bring a couple over.

    Wowsa, man that's a lot of digging. I only used that site to see if my car (and others) are genuine Msport or just badged. 1669 doesn't sound like a lot on the grand scheme of things and I wonder how many of them are actually still alive.

    What repair instructions are you using ? TIS does not give instructions for lifter disassembly only replacement. Don't mix or swap any valve gear you are removing. Use only reputable repair data or BMW TIS and follow instructions very carefully to prevent a disaster.

    I came from an E36 328i coupe. I loved driving that car on the limit, after my mods, you could find the limit right to the edge, very forgiving car. Auto and OBD2. I could use ALL of the available power, it was well sorted. I also had a hankering for an E34, one of the most handsome of the bmws I thought and still think. Its bigger, much more practical being a sedan and it's a V8. I had a 3.0l and swapped it out for a M60B40 and with the 5 speed manual, I am more than happy. Chipped also, cant see how any chip can go from @286 to @320, but there is an improvement, how much I have no idea on mine and I don't care but the throttle response is improved and it gargles on run off so im happy. I have spent thousands on the suspension and its exactly where I want it to be. Anyway I could blah blah all day, but the E36 was tight, I loved the way it turned in and how exploitable it was. My E34, not quite, but I don't go seeking those limits anyway being as high as they are on public roads. Suspension: Slight nod to the E36 especially in steering, keep in mind both cars are modded. The E36 was well balanced and pinned down, with few mods. E34 better cruiser I did many long miles on the E36 and it was awesome, but the bigger motor makes the e34 my pick for longer hauls. Exterior: Full nod to the E34, I take second and third look backs on every occasion, the E36..not so much Interior: E34, much much better leather, and classy if not old. But better quality overall. Yes sports seats much better support, find them if you can. Engines: mmm, both have their merits, you can use more of the 6, it's more efficient more of the time in regards to performance. Once you have had an 8, it's hard to go back, only an idiot would use all of it on the street, I can spin tyres all day long in mine if inclined. I like the noise, its important for me. I like the 8, but it not better than the 6, if that makes sense. Costs: E36's are more plentiful, parts are cheaper all over. Ownership: I feel better with an E34 up the drive. My driving style has changed I think for the better owning one. Nothing against E36 owner/drivers, as I loved my E36, but I am happier in ways I don't think I would have been with the E36. That engine note has much to do with it I think. I don't think I would get another E36 as I live on trademe like many here, and I also had 2x E34's both manuals at the same time for a bit so there must be something in that? Good luck, hope this helps.
