Technically I've been on the forum for a little while, but I just wanted to show off my new E30 - it's my dream car and I love it.

Picked up a genuine (westfalia) towbar for the M5, dropped it off at a locksmith to get a key cut for the removable towball lock, will tackle the wiring tomorrow, weather permitting.

Hey all, after some searching and a near purchase of a 320i, my son has now purchased a 2002 318ti and is in love with it. I'm an IT engineer by profession and pretty handy with some spanners so I'm here to get some tips and tricks fir fixing up the wee beastie for him. We have a couple of issues that I'll post about in the relevant sections but basically, we have all the ABS warning lights lit up like a Christmas tree and the car is throwing secondary air injection error codes from the ECU. We got a great price on it though, so hopefully these are not going to be too damaging to fix !

I voted with my wallet, the dealer was up front about the costs and i agreed to pay them, i know i had other options but i judge value differently to others out there. I will be taking my car back there for its wof in a few months.Everyone wants a car with a complete service history, well someone has to pay for that!!

i find this line of constant retailer bashing somewhat tiresome, and naive to the extreme.Perhaps the business model is old fashioned.Maybe it will all come right in the upcoming "market adjustment." I am sure some of you run your own businesses, and even if you dont you all must realise how much cost there must be to have a large showroom in the main street of a city full of very expensive cars. How do you expect the man who runs that business to pay his way.?They have to have huge margins to pay the bills. There is no need to equate that to a mugging. So the opposite extreme to the BMW dealer only sells crap?

Hahaha will need to get it tidied up after picking up all the cars today. In a very positive note, it's right across the road from the BM service / parts department on Marua Rd

Wiring pretty much all done, also made a mount for the e36 power distribution block in the engine bay. However, I have a question. Can anyone tell me where the wires circled in the picture go? I am fairly sure they are grounds but would be good to know for sure. The ones on the end of that loom are for the coil.

Well, can confidently confirm its a bit over your 'decent' price range you've put up. Must be super performance tyre haha (kidding!)

Well I could of bought a pov spec E36 instead of tyres.. But if we're looking at it like that, a decent 330 E46 for the tyres+wheels lol.. I've spent a decent "half" of what the car is worth on its set up..

Hey guys So my child is smoking now and I'm concerned. Read some articles and it seems to be the valve gasket. Has anyone tried Manukau vehicle servicing. They gave me a pretty decent quote on changing a bunch of stuff altogether. Question is are they good at what they do. Sure they are but would like to know of anyone's experience.

    Yes they looks pretty good..

Hi My experience is with the E36/7 Z3, which should be very similar to the 318ti. You will need a scanner that will talk to the ABS module. The ABS codes will not be found in the ECU. On the Z3 there is a ODB2 plug by the steering column that only talks to the ECU. If I want to talk to the ECU and other modules, I need to use the 20 pin round plug under the hood. Not sure what plugs you have on the 318ti but hope this avoids a trap for you. Secondary air injection/ pumps. I have an article that tells you how to test the secondary air system. Not sure how to attach a file to this post, so PM me an email address and I'll send it to you. Crank Case Ventilation (CCV) problems are the usual cause for crank case pressurisation and leaking valve cover gaskets. A couple of quick tests: 1) Test the hoses from CCV to manifold, with a cold engine, start it up and take the oil filler cap off. The engine should start to stumble as the mixture will be lean due to the CCV system drawing in lots of air. If you try this with a warm engine, you will hear a tone change and maybe a bit of a stumble. The warm engine will be on close loop fuel mixture control and will compensate for the extra air in the mixture by dumping more fuel into the mixture. 2) Check for a blocked oil return hose. Engine off. Carefully remove the CCV hose going to the valve cover (old hoses will crumble). Blow into the hose and listen for air bubble in the oil near the dip stick. I use a piece of garden hose to make it easier to blow into the CCV hose. Hope this helps Regards Murray

These particular wheels were the factory wheels on the E34 535i I parted, if that helps.

Thanks polley, that's the way I'm leaning too, might have to bite the bullet and buy it. Already have everything else I need to do these tunes, this is the final piece of the puzzle lol.

I got the new rubber for the DS2's today and got everything fitted up. Looks way different and will take a while to get used to... Even without the tyres being run in yet they are light-years ahead of the old ones in grip. Once the shiney surface is worn through I'm expecting a pretty big difference. Here's some photo's of the car - it's a bit rough due to a shoddy paint job done about 5 years ago. It looked good for about 3 years but then the paint finish started going down hill. There's a lot of stone chipping on the front of the car too. There's also a supermarket ding in the passenger door. Now I need to save up for a repaint + I'm considering lowering it about 20mm all round. When it's repainted I'mm be putting on new trim all round + replacing the window rubbers.

Sorry Lads, been setting up the new workshop / car garage warehouse for all the toys. So now I can finish all the cars together. I thought I added another post about the measurements and photos but clearly not.... tyres are 225/50/R16 Numbers on the rims - RZ 469 BBS - 8Jx16H2 IS 25 Now im pretty sure these are ET20 (20p) as they fit snuggly on the E34 and E28, but they have also been on the E36 without clearance issues, but I only moved the car 10 meters. My brother also had them on his 5 stud converted E30 to get on a trailer and into his garage, but he didn't complain of them not fitting. The wheels are in fairly good nic, but ill get some proper pics up tonight. Pick up after today will be at the new workshop in Ellerslie on Marua Rd

I apologise for the lack of updates over the last few days, I've been busy working on the car. It is now all physically back together, drivetrain, exhaust, brakes, engine etc all done. All coolant hoses etc are hooked up. I have also relocated the battery to the trunk using e36 parts. Tonight and over the weekend I will be doing the last few small jobs and doing the wiring. The plan to have it driving by the end of the weekend looks very realistic. More to come soon.

Sure was Pete, all appears to be sorted now. There was absolutely no pressure in water when running the bleed procedure! Pump is all changed, pressure is back and all running great

Just a thought - i could order a bunch of stickers and put them in my shop for those who come along for the monthly meet. Saves ollie from having to send them out individually and people car buy them and put it on their car straight away.
