Hey from a new forum member.... 2008 E90 Manual
hotwire replied to MichaelT's topic in New Member Introductions
Welcome to the site As for the "problems" though - can hardly include consumables - tyres & i assume you mean rotors in the equation - they were obviously nearing end of life when you got the car. Heater fan though - FSI unit is just another common failure on BMW's, actually many cars for that matter. -

E36 will cost naff all to maintain anyway -
I have a similar version in my ute that I use for AA jump starts. Can use to start in probably 9 out of 10 non start situations. Have started multiple cars with only about 2v in the vehicle battery, V6 Commodore inc. Have started V8's too. Have also started a 2.7 diesel Mitsi that had about 8v in the battery. Need to allow the glow to work properly before cranking. Initially I charged it & started 30 vehicles without recharge - out of interest to see how it performed. Even then it was still going. As Glenn alludes to though - they are NOT intended for continuous cranking - mine is rated to 500 amp @ 5 secs only. And not to leave connected. I always analyse the situation before using it. ie never use on a flooded engine. And if it doesn't start within the time frame after a couple of attempts - i abandon it for a battery.

Ron I agree on all, well most of that apart from - I still use 8 thou & 10 thou to set tappets....

E36TI had an E30 rear end, coupes & sedans are different. Would be simpler to just update whats on there The series cars handle & stop well - updated shocks/springs, stock brakes but performance pads, replace all suspension bushes

Funny, I was 10yrs old when we went metric in NZ so I grew up with both, and for the most part - relate to both. Metric, being to base 10 is simpler/more logical though. 4x2 or 6x2 is still easier off the tongue than 100x50 or 150/50 Speed - both logical Distance - relate to both Measurement - relate to both Area - both but metric simpler Weight - metric Volume - both but metric much simpler Pressure - still PSI for me

Yep, only in recent years have NZ demands upped the ante on spec - look at most new/recent cars have many/ most boxes ticked. Years ago our cars were pretty much poverty spec - as was the UK market
-
Sure is Cant say I've ever taken any notice when under them, & that's been plenty! That said, I've not had do that fix on a Beemer before. in a flat battery scenario - have always had key to access the car & open the bonnet. My issues have always been car locked, (usually deadlocked) & keys in boot
-
Of course - totally obvious - dumbass me Depending how much fuel in the tank - you could blow air down each & see which one burbled into the fuel
-
Never seen a power connector under the starter on one. Always been up top between the the plenum tubes. Are you sure yours is original? Yes 90 deg to deadlock with the key BUT auto deadlocks via remote - which is generally how they are locked...
-
Trying to work out which end/where that pic is showing?
-
Agree totally on what you are saying but i am missing something - where are you seeing the date stamp?
-
I am soooooo Bloody jealous!!!!!!
-
Yep, power up the car as others have said if the battery is dead. Done this many times on AA jobs. Wont work if the car is dead locked though, which is often. Before having lock picks & when deadlocked - Have done as he did then powered up an ign circuit & then power the windows down.
-
Bloody scary & if it was a mistake - plain neglect & disgusting! You a re right Glenn - everyone makes mistakes & sh*t does happen In this case though - absolute neglect, one bolt not tightened - yes maybe, but all of them...
