So what years are in this recall because after reading this I went to the local stealer and asked about it they said No my vehicle was not part of the recall. assembly October 2001 NZ new Compact.

Re your rear screen curtain be careful with the plastic guide clips that slid in the track and hold the curtain as it moves up and down . These are under a lot of force when operating and brake with out to much fuss, been their. In my case it was make some or a complete new curtain $$$$$ so I made some out of a plastic coat hanger a bit of messing around I will admit but they worked well. Best of luck with the car as you work through the issues that arise.

The front bumper carrier and front bumper shock absorbers for the 325 are rated at either 4km/h or for Korea at 8km/h. Would imagine the 5rs would be rated much the same. Glad to hear you are going to get her fixed if possible get involved with either the dismantling or re-assembly as it will give practical experience and how the cars are but together. Best of luck with the repair.

Their are two systems for the auto leveling that I'm aware of. one you do it with the little wheel with 0,1,2,3 by rotating it the higher the number the more the auto leveling motors will lower the headlights . The second is automatic through sensors attached to the front and rear suspension this picks up the movement of the suspension as it works and lowers and raises the headlights accordingly to avoid blinding on coming vehicles. As your 530 is 2001 you may be lucky with it not throwing warning codes mine didn't you will definitely notice a difference in the light quality on low beam.

Are the side pieces on the exons lights white or orange ? What else do you wish to do with them. Take care when fitting the left one it is tight around the air con pipe work. From memory if the car is after a certain date the wiring should be plug and play just check all the drain hose are clear and work properly.

Karl all I can say is be very careful and get good reliable sound advise. Having transplanted a M54B25 into a e46 Ti the coding part of the project was a night mare and still having problems with it.

Hi Grant not trouble with the high beam either they were good but cannot comment on the pre- face lift e39 lights were they glass or still the poly carb? The face lift 2002 530 I had H3,s I think were crap my old sentra had better low beams than it hence the change to the xeons. You may be correct about the reflectors taking care of the light pattern but if the light has to travel through a degraded lens face then light intensity and quality will suffer and any increase in brightness will only make is worse.

Agree with Allan on the e39 low beam they are not good just a caution on the xenon get the correct rated ones. Wouldn't they need to have some sort of DOT or S.A.E number on them to be legit or is that on the housing?

Are you guys having fun? It is called planned obsolescence over time anything and every thing will wear out and need to be replaced or attempted to be fixed. In this case (imo) what you are doing is only a temper fix and the problem will come back, experience gained. Due to the position of the headlight covers these are exposed to all sorts of conditions, rubbish from the road, harsh UV rays plus others, heat from the bulbs etc and over time the material is going to show this wear and tear. By removing the contaminates you expose the poly carbonate surface to further degrading and by putting protecting coatings only helps to delay it from happening again a year or so. Also you may and possibly will alter the optic quality of the carbonate and they will never be the same. Their are firms it appears that say they can do this and as I have not used their service cannot comment .What I did find by replacing the headlight lenses, if available or headlights totally a longer term solution was achieved. This option may not be to everybody's liking but in the end offers the cheapest solution.

More a personal thing you will either like or dis like up to you. Consider the vehicle as such and it's asking price you can buy a lot more for 37 g than a 13 year old vehicle done 163 th k's. As for myself I like the exterior colour, the wheels do nothing for me or the car imo, don't like the sticky out bits on the front bumper, interior colour combo is a shocker, not sure on the dash and door trim either,the asking price is way over the top with that said bring on the flamers

Could you clarify for me was the flywheel fitted to the car a dual mass one or solid? If dual mass why was it not removed and inspected by the mechanic doing the work as these are know to fail and cost heeps to replace.

Reading this you appear to be working your way through the list of oil leak problems keep at it. As you stated the previous owner was muffet didn't have a clue ' and you now have his mess to clean up. Any chance of some pay out from the shady shark dealer you bought the car off? AllanW don't agree with the M54 sump thing both mine have leaked and needed to be replaced 530 and 325.

A couple of things you could try Remove the rear seat and see if their is any paper work attached to it sometimes if still their this may help. Run your last seven digits through a decoder to get what options it has fitted. Go to a parts cat site and enter the 7 digits of your vin this will give you some more info on your car. It will also depend on what boxes were ticked when ordered to what level the M spec was in your vehicle. As it would appear that BMW has allowed its models M, M sport M3 range to be so Bastardized that it is very hard to confirm sometimes what is what plus throw in the manual part not being documented and you have the mess you are faced with. -
Not uncommon they leak on the same side but towards the rear also. To replace the sump gasket or pressed metal gasket is a pain so make sure it is leaking from their first before you decide to proceed.

Re bumpers you can research this online as it was all done to death by the yanks . From memory their are 3 different type bumpers for the e39 standard, M sport and M5 as Andrew mentioned the bumpers mounts may all be the same. BUT its BMW and their is always a but the attachments and some of the under panels are different also the air brake duct method , type of fog lights, lower bumper mesh etc etc. Just research it a little and you will get a better understanding of what it en tales.

"The vehicle will be daily driven and I do trips all over the lower north island, hence querying economy of both". Could I ask why a e39 or a e60 as the e39 are now 10 to 14 years old. If you stay with the 5er family and want economy imo 530d the draw back is the rego and road user charges which I believe are to go up yet again. Next 530i sedan obtain a late model 2003 as by then most of the bugs had been sorted and they have most of the options as standard equipment. Weather you want a M sport version would be your choice the harder suspension set up can be a little rough for some people. Owned a 530 for 5 odd years and it was a pleasure to drive as well as a nice highway cruiser plenty of power when needed. The fuel economy 735-750k a tank running 98. They are no light weight car and with that comes the need for a few ccc hence the 530 and 540 be wary of the 520 just a little on the light side cc wise again just my opinion. Another thing I liked was step on the brakes and you stop a nice feeling when dealing with the nut jobs driving these days. Then the 540 yes they have heaps of power but should have being a v8 although some 80kgs heavier and front heavy they are not as well balanced over all as the 530. Also not as sharp in the steering recirculating ball type box I believe as against rack and pinion in the 530 not knocking just saying. Take your time and drive as many of them as you can and this will give you a better understanding of the vehicles and their characteristics. When you have decided get a pre- purchase inspection done by a competent BMW specialist to be safe. Best of luck in your search

Josh I know where you are coming from it is no mean feat to renovate a home and keep it to a manageable cost not only $$$but also time wise these days. Have found it needs three things time, money and attitude get the three together and all is good. Andy just need a few more cross braces and all will be haha. "equally there are people that give it a go that just shouldn't leaving the next person with a big problem Isn't that the truth in most things in life.

It's great to see it all coming together for you just out of interest have you kept a rough tally of the hours you spent fiddling with things to get them just right. It will scare you at the time it really takes to do this sort of work properly.
