Is it the vanos model? They began putting the vanos engines in in Sep 98. Aside from the schnitzer exhaust, do you know if it's been treated to some cams or a dme tune?

Did they fit genuine screens? In typical bmw fashion the alignment of the e39 screen on to the roof panel determines how much wind noise you get.

The proper bosch one ex o'seas is not all that expensive. I too tried the vw maf and thought job done. Got the correct maf and got the 540i low end torque back.
