I remember that from when I had issues with the lpfp in my e91. Mine was a bodged in aftermarket lpfp causing me issues. https://www.tasteslikepetrol.net/2018/11/schnellwagon-fuel-pump-shenanigans/

You can do that check just by giving it Wot in 3rd on the road. Don't need to hit redline.

Intermittent issue when shifting gears - 130i Manual
KwS replied to NZ_InFerno's topic in Maintenance
Right, so I went over and had a poke around last night. Can confirm the issue, the throttle will randomly fail to respond immediately, and will come back with a jerk. After that if you keep driving there is no low end power and the throttle response is rubbish. Inpa comes up with code 2A38, valvetronic servomotor: binding or open circuit. No CEL. We cleared the code, did a relearn for both end stops (which passed OK, can hear motor go from stop to stop) and it seemed to drive fine until it faulted and threw the same code. At this point we noted in inpa that the live data from the valvetronic motor showed a fixed reading for "VVT actual value" and wasn't moving (like it does when tested straight after an end stop test). Running the end stop test again "freed" it up and it passed fine. So I'm thinking either it's the valvetronic motor, or maybe the eccentric shaft sensor. Need Dan to check if there is oil in the connector for the sensor as that's a common failure and oil is a giveaway. Neither part is cheap enough to be shotgunning parts at it. Anyone had this before? -
Guess you didn't love the M5 as much as you said?
-
Only thing I know is that the pano roof on those are real troublesome, both in operation/failure and for leaking and drains blocking.
-
Sounds like some cars do a self-learn on the valvetronic motor, but INPA might be able to do a relearn and end stops. Hopefully my INPA works on it. this is the self-learn, if it helps. turn the car ON (don't start engine), and wait. You should here the car going through the "self test/calibration" on the valvetronic motor. Wait about 30 seconds and turn the car off. Next restart everything should be ready.
-
Can INPA do it?

Just thinking out loud, do these have a thing where it kills the throttle if you apply the brake? Could it be a dodgy brake light switch?

Thats a really nice colour

18 months ago I got my e91 335i for 10k with full bolt ons, LSD and stage 2+ mhd and xhp flashes. They're out there if you're patient.

This is why im suspicious of their work. Unless the car has had timing chain work recently and it wasnt done properly (chain refitted a tooth out), or the tensioners failed (which they havent), there isnt really any other way for the timing to be out without it being Vanos related. Good thing you still have a couple of N52s there with new vanos solenoids for future testing eh? Also, the roof rail flap you're missing, can they be removed and refitted without breaking them? same as E9x? Im wondering if you could take one from a car at pickapart or something instead of doing the whole strip?
-
Would a cam sensor issue not throw a code? Seems like they spent a lot of time checking things that maybe they didnt need to touch? Like why was the timing "out", if it was only a cam sensor issue? Either way im glad you got it back and you can finally get in and trash the pants off it, like you should've been able to from day one.

Iirc the 323i wasn't a model sold in the states, so probably why it's not on that list despite being similar.

I think you want to swap the auto E87 for my Saab 93 wagon Yes, you do...

You can upload the logs through the mhd app to datazap, which is an awesome free site for reviewing your logs. The logging module is well worth it.

Plus, unless its been helicoiled, each time those rocker cover bolts are loosened off, they might not go back in again >_<

That gasket is still not seated properly in the front above that sensor, it should be flush and not sticking out. There is still about 600% too much sealant slathered everywhere too. The gasket can be very fiddly, but any competent person with eyes and fingers could fit it without issue. Im not sure what other engine work you had done, but in neither of the S50s ive done the vanos on have I had to touch the fuel rail. I wouldn't be using them again. I have also just noticed, in the original post, 3rd photo down, it looks like one of your vacuum caps on the throttle body balance ports is broken off?

Im not going to waste my time, but if you want proof im sure you can find it. Seeing some of the stuff presented to certifiers that gets fixed, its obvious that there are a lot of cars on the road that otherwise would've been deathtraps. Sure, there will be a few out there that arent following the rules, but between road policing and the WOF system, it picks up a lot of the stragglers.

I wont lie, that is stunning and makes me really want one now! Good work on the interior too. Most would've just swapped in boring black, but that tan is lush as fark.

Your signature says you have an MHD tune, you can use MHD to log

Jesus guys, way to take the bait. I was having a laugh with the N52 comment.
-
There would be an awful lot more cars out there with wheels falling off if it wasnt working. Unfortunately you cant always beat ignorance, arrogance and misinformation. "oh nah spacers dont need a cert bro".
-
Anything to get rid of the N54 eh? I hear the N52 is plentiful, might be easier than the B58
-
IIRC its a resonator. Cats are #2 and #3 in the diagrams and usually have O2 sensors on either side of them. E: oh, you didnt mean the highlighted #1.

Isnt this one of the typical first signs of the HPFP failing? Might want to have the fuel pressure logged and see that its not dropping.
