  1. Makes for some very interesting reading into the challenges faced in creating a performance exhaust for mass market.
  2. Hahah yeah I did the same. good show though even if the mechanic moaned about taking out a gear box. WTF? it weighs practically nothing. Try do all that sh*t with out a hoist!
  3. ouch! ... thats a bit of bad luck! question: .. will it fit into an e30 ?
  4. Its all possible http://www.bimmersport.co.nz/forums/index....showtopic=18872 Alot of people shy away from Vanos for some reason. If its well maintained its fine and you can purchase some great re-build kits for it now. With locked cams you kind of loose the low down torque the m54b30 is known for that or loose it higher end power. For driviblity and the weight of the car I recon something with more low end torque could be the go for this car. Unless he wants the more s50b30 euro feel to it? (power hidden in the top end) The Link g4 can control vanos so its a great option for not much $$$. But then it wouldnt be a challenge to make new BMW stuff fit in old BMWs. Sorry if what I type sounds all obvious to the regulars .. this is more so we can have a good discussion about it, which has been lacking recently on here.
  5. He would have to run most of the kbus modules / sensors if he was to stick with the standard DME/EGS. My vote to make it easy would be go stand alone. That old red e30m3 was running a m54b30 in the open series for the first few seasons... he ran a stand alone setup however and did away with the flyby wire system.
  6. Ray, if you still have all the eletronics / loom and sensors for the m54 then it would be possible to do this. Otherwise I would just run a stand alone aftermarket computer and throttle cable system and throttle body from a e46 m52b28tu like westy's. It looks like the link g4 ECU will support input from the potentiometer (throttle pedal) for flyby wire support which might be a go. Or .. it is not our of the question to custom up some s50b32 ITBs EWS and DME will need the IKE from the e46 to run (amoung other things.) You will need to recode the DME and EGS for manual (easy enough with your GT1, and I have the details for your PROGMAN SSS to excute this) and probably look into removing other errorous functions. If you were to lock off the vanos you would need to run aftermarket cams. (not a bad thing ) Time and project wise it would be one of your more time consuming in the wiring and coding department. But I think worth it. I would be a ballsie project but once complete you'd have a much better understanding of the e46/e39 kbus systems. You have all the means that you need to do it ... question now are you ready for the challenge. It would 130i quick!
  7. Brendons uncle has the other replica f40 everyones talking about. Twin turbo v8 lexus engine.
  8. Do it .. and make a promise to us you wont get bored of it and flick it on. you have to keep it if you get it. sorry ... bimmersport has spoken

    My First BMW e46

    Looks awesome! .. welcome
  10. 99% sure the antenna sits in the c pilar and not your bumpers.
  11. yeah, I found after I replaced my control arms with e46 m3 ones it fixed a lot of the turnin problems anyways (and after a full alignment).. no need for a strut brace. Another very strange behalvior I found with the strut brace on was the fuzzy grey line of on the edge and loosing grip was very small. The car wasn't as forgiving. Very fun to drive and agile .. however.
  12. haha .. yes! .. I feel your pain .. I just spent similar amounts on the e46 and as you can see with the strain of bits for the e30 this month .. it aint been cheap.
  13. My experiences with a strut brace on the e46 where interesting. there where positive and negative things about running one. In the limit the car was great. Around taupo the 330 was out performing e46 m3's in the handling department. On the road for day to day sriving it was interesting. Defanite turn in improvements however I found it just a bit too hard for me and non forgiving when driving over uneven surfaces in the road. Open road I did not like having the strut brace on.. it made the car too 'alert' which after a drive to gisborne from akl was just a pain in the ass. these days I run without one for daily driving. the other thing is, a strut brace is only as good as the rest of your components. If you have worn shocks / control arm ball joints and bushes .. there isnt much point going for one. Do the basic maintaince first.. then look at buggerising around with bracing.
  14. Sorted out the clutch / pressure plate today .. Went for Carbon / Kevlar instead of a metal composite to keep the drive train rattles down and will be a little nicer to drive in traffic. Perfect mix of hard core driving / track days and heavy street and ablility to drive in rush hour without glazing up the clutch. I had a 3035 ft pound pressure spring mated to a new OE sachs housing. Is good for 450rwhp. All assembled ... Off to be balanced tomorrow
  15. haven't got the bill yet ... but sub 1k
  16. old daul mass is around 11-12kg (sorry dont have scales with me)
  17. Its been 5 weeks in the making and fair bit of CAD work plus mock up from westy's e30/e46 flywheel / pressure plate setup (cheers tony).. I bring you the billet s50b32 single mass flywheel. It weighs in at 6.23kgs and had the dual mass ring gear put onto it to match my starter setup. Old s50 dual mass vs the new single mass (quite the difference) Should rev like a bitch now...
  18. As much as we like to bag them, I still think the world wouldn't be the same with out those POS roaming around.
  19. Wheels would of only cost a max of 6k (anything over that your your paying way too much) .. tires = 2100 .. mind you they are 'only' goodyears and not Conti's or anything silly like that. Swap the blacked out lights back Nice car however .. has the right bits on it.
  20. Hey Jono .. I know your on top of it. Depends on the offset for me as my BBK on the e30 has a minimum of 17inch and the clearence from the spoke depth from the stud face. Would be keen for some 17x8.5 in 5x120 for the e30 .. but I might have to see them to measure and check. Also, If you can get wheels made (obviously depending on market demand). I have some very cool ideas which will defanitly sell / move stock. Will PM you.
  21. Very interesting ... and good on BMW for it. Keep us posted on the outcome.
