You can get an m60 or an m62 bored out a fair way. I seem to remember reading that they built them with really thick walls. M62 did have a 4.8litre variant so thats obviously quite doable. The S62 was 5.0 litres but I dont know if it used a different block.

It is BMW business MD. I don't know if MD is working as I have no minidiscs but the tuner works fine cause I listened to the radio when I drove it home. Cosmetically its excellent.

Thanks for the very informative post. Does the m60 has the same amount of issues as the m62?
-
You mean m73b54? Still heavier, more expensive and not that much more power.
-
Yes, but not if you want to stay with a BMW motor. For the money I prefer the m62 over the newer N62 and N63 engines. The N63 had to be recalled because of so many faults. If money was less of an object I would chose the s62.

Well done James. You are a legend.

Do you find that with the lighter flywheel, its also louder?

Evans was worse than I expected. Matt LeBlanc was better than I expected. I think it needs a third host - maybe Sabine as those three personalities together would be interesting. And someone tells Evans to stop trying so hard and to stop running and shouting. I will probably watch the next episode, but only if the cars are good. Bring on the grand tour.

How ironic

Check the water pump, radiator and expansion tank while you are at it.

v12 would be awesome, and I have seen that trade me link before, but I'd rather have a v8. v12 too heavy in the nose. Just the short block on its own is 15kg heavier than the m62, and 29kg heavier than the m54. And torque and horsepower is almost identical; M62b44 218kw and 440nm m70b50 220kw and 450nm high revving v8 would be my preference.

So after much umming and ahhing I've made a decision. The car will become a project car and will get a m60/m62 and getrag 420g conversion. This will be a long and expensive process, but it means I can take my time and do it right, and pick up the parts needed when they come available for cheap. In the meantime I have a daily driver so there is no rush. To help fund raise I am wrecking my parts car. If you want to help you can buy some parts of it; http://bimmersport.co.nz/topic/56147-wrecking-2001-325i-wagon/ Also I've never done a v8 swap into an e46, so any knowledge would be appreciated. The internet has a bit of info, but you cant beat info from bimmersport members who have first hand know how. I know subframe will have to either be swapped/modified or the sump modified to fit. And if I go down the modified sump route then custom engine mounts have to be used. Car will get brake and suspension upgrade, as well as chassis strengthening.

What does it weigh?

Time to make some space in my back yard. This car has 165k and was very well maintained by the previous owner. It was written off by insurance after it was rear ended even though the damage was reasonably minor. Most parts available; Good m54b25 engine $600 ono complete Good auto box $250 ono Set of four wheels with kuhmo 205/55/16 tyres. Three tyres have 5mm tread, one has 2mm. $300 ono Any parts you want just ask.
-
Yes they are, they will all fail as they all have the same faulty valve stem seals.
-
Avoid the n42 or n46 4 cylinder motor at all costs. The earlier m43 4 cylinder is fine, as are the diesel and 6 cylinder engines in the e46's. You will get better mileage from a manual.

What mirrors are they?

Anyone got a tool to remove the e36 subframe bushings?
