Michael. 2313 Report post Posted May 3, 2021 Will be interesting to know what the specific cause was in these instances. I think it is easy for most people to forget anything like a vehicle that requires a high density energy source to power it, like a chemical lithium battery or petrol is always at a risk of combusting if the conditions line up triggered by some kind of technical fault.

You've got the wrong attitude when it comes to the stuff comments section. Roleplaying a former Gloriavale church member in the comments section got me through a deskjob 2009-2013. 1

Official statement from BMW Group NZ: “BMW confirms that a fire incident occurred over the weekend involving a BMW i3. The vehicle, which is over seven years of age, was privately imported into New Zealand by the owner and was not purchased through an authorised BMW dealer in New Zealand. We are not aware of the vehicle ever having been serviced by any member of our authorised BMW dealer network in this country; however, we understand that the owner chose to recently have the vehicle’s servicing carried out by an independent repairer.”
freaknout 47 Report post Posted May 8, 2021 (edited) That last sentence is interesting (from a PR perspective). "; however, we understand that the owner chose to recently have the vehicle’s servicing carried out by an independent repairer." Whilst the other facts can be verified through BMW's own systems, puchase, servicing, etc, this last one surely cannot? An unnecessary addition to the statement and perhaps demonstrating the tensions here? I would've advised differently. Gaz 1061 Report post Posted May 8, 2021 Reading between the lines, we didn't know the vehicle was even here so if there were any outstanding recalls or issues with the vehicle, we weren't able to reticfy

Evening gents I think your replies, quite interestingly, illustrate my point in two different ways. Breaker, I think your outtake is exactly what BMW hoped for; somehow the fire has been caused by the owner and “independent repairer” (or perhaps they just wanted to use the ever under-utilised semi-colon!). How could that possibly be known with certainty by an unrelated party in such a short space of time? What is their “understanding” exactly? It may be nothing more than chatting to the recovery skip driver. We just don’t know. Gaz, I suggest you could reasonably come to that conclusion without the 2nd half of the last sentence? So why insert it? I think Breaker has answered that question (that no one asked), some people will conclude that it’s risky taking their car to an Indy. You know, this isn’t a great hill to die on. If I had an i3 I would be taking it to the BMW dealer. I just found their statement really interesting from a professional perspective.

I doubt you would ever find out what truely happened in this Instance but being BMW serviced is the best bet to avoid any recall or unattended servicing that should have been done, probably make zero difference, part of the mystery of life Agree the commentary from BMW doesn’t really say anything and feels slightly dismissive and condescending. One suspects there’s zero risk taken - at least in respect of facts - in that release.
