08 E60 M5

Recommended Posts

Decided it was finally time to realize a childhood dream and get myself a V10 M5, the E39 M5 is still very much a car I'd love to own but that can wait for now.

I'd been on the fence for some time but I'd been watching M539 Restorations videos on the tube and his recent videos of his E60 M5 got me thinking to the point where I'm posting this thread.

2008 BMW M5 (2006 build)

102000km at purchase

Initial goals with the car is to give the car a big birthday, service all the fluids and replacing it's tired brakes.

Next step will be bringing the car back to a factory look with standard wheels and removal of BLAAAACK additions.

First small job was to sort out the godawful (in my opinion) tail lights, I've also replaced the black BMW badge prior to the photo's below.

Congrats, looks like a nice car other than the previous owners lack of taste.

How brave are you, is there any history on the usual big jobs?

The car's had an engine replacement in 2018 by the previous owner, have receipts from BM Workshop for some un-godly number. The replacement engine has the big stuff done.

Plastic piece between the lights, 10 min job max. 20 if you want to clean the dust out.

Good on you for killing the black.  I had mine in black with gloss everything and and I much preferred the black and silver look.

Not sure if the discolouration is just wear on your leather but I have used Chemical Guys leather cleaner on my grey leather and it cleans out all the brown staining.

I notice the E55 in the back there.  I think I remember you asking about them a while ago.  The M5 is a much more capable car.

Cheers for the leather tip, once all the servicing and exterior stuff was taken care of the next item was the leather.

I was looking into a kit from Colourlock to repair some of the cracking in the drivers bolster.

Busy weekend working on the M5.

The car now has new brake disc's/pads/sensors all round, aside from having to drill out the set screws on the front disc's the job was fairly easy.

Completed a brake fluid flush with some Motul DOT4 LV.

Replaced the cabin air filters which were dated 2016.

Replaced all 9.3L of oil with BMW supplied 10w60.

Was happy to see no leaks of any kind under the engine/trans/diff, BM Workshop has done a fantastic job of making the car look like it's never had the engine out.

Didn't have alot of time between rain this weekend, got some small stuff tidied up.

Replaced the aftermarket M5 emblem on the back, the OEM part from BMW had a plastic film over it to hold everything in place to space it the M and the 5 correctly when fit. I checked the placement, which was ok.

Removed the window stickers and glued the left hand cup holder back together which didn't help it working any better. IMG20210626140127.thumb.jpg.ef56cccb556b56041d4a61d616ad92a4.jpg

All of the Colorlock kits work excellently together.  The leather cleaner works miracles.  I always finish the whole lot off with Elephant Leather Preservative (from Colorlock) and it keeps things supple, protected, and looking good.

Will be a much classier car once your return it to a stock appearance.

All the mods the prior owners did really reduce the quality look, especially as the add ons age, like the rear badge.

From what I've heard, you'd be lucky! Top speed (according to wiki)
