  1. TBH the whole volunteer thing has little to do with best practice but I don't want to perpetuate the discussion - it was the dismissive responses to feedback provided by others that actually got my back up, not the change itself. That seems to have been lost in the noise but it's stale news now. It was intended as, and I attempted (read: failed?) to frame it as, constructive criticism. I do understand that when you've committed lots of personal time to something it can be difficult to remain objective. Certainly no offence intended and I'll stay out of the discussion from here on in. -------------- Although this remains important to me: Is there a way to edit the underlying code of a post outside the WYSIWYG editor?
  2. Missed my point. And I also have a little IT experience, specifically in managing large internet teams and properties. That gives me the experience to know good practice from bad. No BS or malice in my comments above, I stand by them. Good to hear. Is there a way to edit the underlying code of a post outside the WYSIWYG editor?
  3. Never used it myself and never really saw the point. I just hate the spammy signature. Most mobile phone signatures are just as bad - I could care less what somebody used to post something.
  4. That attitude was unfashionable in the mid '90's and it's most certainly inappropriate nowadays. Don't volunteer for a job you don't want to do. In this day and age the user experience is king, so much so that it's considered sacrosanct by all successful internet operators whether they offer a "free" service or not. Ultimately the users are the most important commodity, no users, no content, no sponsors, no site. To dismiss or disregard user feedback is short sighted, to have never even solicited it before a major change seems quite the oversight in 2016. MySpace had exactly 0 competitive threats this month 10 years ago. Then they stopped listening to their users. History tells us that wasn't a smart thing to do. I'm give or take on the new software, some nice features but other really annoying ones that hopefully get ironed out over time. And the contrast (or lack thereof) does make isolating elements very difficult. Providing some warning and, if a test site is impossible, some screenshots to solicit feedback would be considered best practice because it's a practice that's proven to both increase user acceptance and decrease negative feedback upon launch. Essentially if you take the 'shove it in approach' (which is the site operators right) you're absolutely inviting positive and negative feedback from an established user base. How you deal with that feedback is a good measure of your suitability for the job. I still support this site, I'm still willing to donate but this type of attitude - "take it or leave it" - is pretty poor form.

I'm sure I've got half a dozen somewhere! No promises but what were you looking for?

^ there's been a few discussions about such plates here and people have used them with various levels of success. Everybody agrees they're not legal and that we should avoid excessive promotion of such activities on the forum. Nevertheless I think most people recognise it's hardly the crime of the century and it's simply caveat emptor.

We were being raped hard. Now we're being raped a little less hard. We're still being raped and that's reason enough to complain. The government had a perfect opportunity to introduce market prices or competition here for our benefit and they failed us (again).
  8. If they need a wreck they have plenty already and can make as many more as they want. I'm still more concerned about the license plate anyway!
  9. They'll have lots of crashed ones already as an outcome of Euro NCAP testing...
  10. Accepted, and that's the main reason I used the word "principle" instead of "rule". NZ law does contribute to the problem, passing on the left should be outlawed and (much) stricter enforcement of "stay left" should be introduced. Having driven in Europe for over 5 years I believe these two rules, along with banning heavy vehicles from the right hand lane would really reduce frustration-based actions and accidents in New Zealand. Our myopic agencies with their head-in-the-sand approach to road safety are making our roads more dangerous. Expecting everybody to drive everywhere at 30km/h because "speed kills" is criminal. In the absence of a sensible road code and effective driver education we all need to develop, implement or adopt other, common sense principles to avoid trouble. I don't think either driver in the OP's video did that but I'm loath to criticise either of them, the rules aren't clear and I've seen and experienced much, much worse.
  11. Hmm, the way I see it the Honda was ahead and in the right hand lane, merging like a zip principle doesn't apply here. The principles I'd apply are: Don't pass on the left of somebody If somebody is passing you on the right give them the right of way If I were in the left lane in this situation I'd consider it incumbent upon myself to let the Honda pass and I would have merged in behind them. If I were in the Honda I wouldn't have been passing that slowly that close to the merge point, I would have sped up.
  12. Trunk lid harness? Common e36 problem.
  13. Wouldn't "BMDBLU" have been a better plate than "BMDBLW"? WTF does that mean?
  14. Tapatalk blows. Doubling up on signatures is unforgivable, adding an advertising signature to indexable post content is reason enough people shouldn't use it. But Drew is correct, it's not obsolete. But if you must use it TURN OFF THAT DAMN SIGNATURE because we can't!
  15. Spoken like a true sysadmin! Us ungrateful users, who needs 'em anyway.
  16. Subscribed. Keep us posted with developments Nathan. I'm in a similar boat.
  17. Perhaps that's my problem? No preview, no opportunity to provide feedback? A very harsh and stark change. However well intentioned these things deserve a soft introduction rather than a crash landing.
  18. Unfortunately it looks like it was washed with steel wool. Engine bay could do with a vacuum too! I think if you're asking that sort of money for a 20 year old car it should be properly detailed before being photographed and advertised.
  19. There must be alternatives, I think this one is awful, it's just like all the elements were spewed onto the page. Let's at least enable all the alternatives. A "tweak" isn't going to fix this one.
  20. How do I revert to the previous theme please? Can't see myself liking this one.
  21. As a matter of interest do you find the 18v to be a satisfactory replacement for air? I wouldn't have considered them equal, think air would be way more powerful?
  22. If you're charging a 500% markup then you should be offering a warranty Andy. That type of margin easily covers time to remove, clean and test as well as any potential return costs. An $11 part simply isn't worth $60+ unless it comes with a bulletproof warranty.
  23. No its very easy to provide a warranty and if you're marking something up 500% then you should. If it doesn't work you get your money back is very easy. If it breaks within three months you get your money back is very easy. 8f you're marking something up you need to provide commensurate value add. Anything less is unscrupulous.
