E46 320D - Bad Alternator and Power Steering Repair Advice.
zero replied to MichaelTaylor's topic in Maintenance
Check your engine mounts are good, to limit engine movement. But if I remember correctly there are at least two pulley designs on the e46 alternators, and one sits further proud than the other. -
Itbs make a great noise, but a very low bang for the buck, and can actually lose power if done wrong. Unless you have a set of s62 itb's lying around, or money is no object, I wouldn't recommend it. If money is no object these are good; https://racehead.com.au/product/bmw_m60_m62_v8_complete_itb_kit_open_trumpetpet/ Biggest gains you can get on this engine is good headers, and bigger cams. Neither is cheap

Stock internals will take up to 13psi before you need to start looking at aftermarket pistons. 13psi proboably equates to around 500-600hp. There are four different intake manifolds - you want the earliest one with the trumpets. For throttlebody use the one from the n62b48, its 3mm bigger than the biggest m62 one. You will need to port match the intake manifold to it but thats easy

I can recommend the ie steering coupler. Good product for a decent price

Yes, I definetly think its worth doing. We would love to see your progress.

When my wagon interior swap is completed you can take it for a drive. Obviously its a lighter car being an e46 but should give you some idea

Honestly, these engines are not worth spending money on, better to sell it and buy a six cylinder. I have a thread somewhere where I did a major overhaul including valve stem seals, and it fixed the smoking issue but the engine grenaded itself not much time later when it dropped a valve.

I guess thats what happens when you make the buying process as difficult as possible. Out of towners would not have been able to get into Auckland under lockdown either.
-
Looks like one design team designed the front, one designed the back, and one designed the middle, all separately from each other.
-
So many grandads in this thread haha

Ok boomer

This was the question I was referring to; "Does the A/C blow cold? " Anyway, its been quite humorous watching the q & a on his auction.
-
Now the seller is refusing to say if the ac works. He wants the buyer to fly up to Auckland to press the ac button.

What size and brand tyres are you running on the rear? You might have to widebody to get a big enough tyre under the guard to get you better traction
-
Its not very helpful to people out of town who cant get there to inspect. Imo any reasonable person would simply post a photo of the rust.

Will that modification of the inner arch pass cert?
-
Have you any hard evidence to back that up, because alot of top repairers have used that method, including reddish motorsport?
-
I'm planning on epoxying on the plates, and also using structural epoxy foam inside the racp. Both are bmw approved methods.
-
Does it work out more cost effective to have franklin cams modify your existing cams, than to buy upgraded cams? I know this is the case with the bmw M5x and M6x engines
-
If I had to buy one of these x5's with my own money I would get the first 4.6is because its rarer, and the seller says the chain guides have been done
-
n62 has its own issues, so both will need a fair bit set aside for mantenance.
-
Let me know how you like it. I've been looking for one too

Have you tried dragons breath?
