After redoing the cooling system on both e46's a few weeks back (radiators/expansion tanks/thermostats/waterpumps etc) I tested both cars for leaks on Sunday and both passed perfect. I then installed new bmw coolant (thanks Glenn) and distilled water into the red e46. The engine block drain plug is hard to get to but I managed it. Babara will get her coolant done this weekend.

Google 'e46 fan delete mod' - its a very common mod. E46's came from the factory with either the viscous fan and auxilary fan, or with the more powerful electric fan. You remove the viscous fan and the auxilary fan. Then you put in the electric fan - it bolts straight up to the factory mounts and the factory wiring plug. I've done it on both my e46's with great results.

I would do the fan delete mod. The clutch fans are known to explode and take half the cooling system with them. Some even put dents in the bonnet. If you are spending money on a clutch fan, better to spend the same money on the fan delete mod. Engine will be quieter, rev smoother and use less fuel.

I have briefly read about it as I will need to modify my m62 thats going in my e46 project. I will follow this thread with interest. Is the m60 going in an e36?

Is the reason for doing this so you can fit the m60 in a three series without the sump fouling the crossmember?

The zf box would be the way to go, but you will need to get your driveshaft shortened.

Are you still running the getrag 220 box?

Leak down test is important as it will tell you if your head gaskets are good or not. Maybe a head gasket was already leaking and forcing cylinder pressure into the cooling system, thus increasing the pressure and blowing the hose?

Here is a pic of the auto box. It even has the paper stickers still completely intact.

m54b25 motor in very good condition. It drove well and had 165k when the car was rear ended and subsequently written off. No leaks that I could see - this engine was well maintained with regular oil and coolant changes. Asking $450 as I need the space. Comes with all you see in the pics plus a few more things that were removed from it separately when I pulled the engine. I also have an auto box which is also in very good condition - it shifted very smoothly when I drove the car. I'm asking $200. Its a ZF 5HP19, also called a A5S325Z in BMW speak.

I took the motor and box out as I will be getting rid of the car soon. Motor is an M54b25 in good condition. No sign of the usual oil leaks, and was very smooth to drive. Comes with all the stuff in the picture plus a few other bits I took off to aid in removal. I dont have much space for it so Im asking $450 for it before it goes on trademe. I also have the matching autobox which is in mint condition - even the paper stickers are completely intact. Asking $200 for it before it goes on trademe. I also have other parts available before the car goes to scrap metal.

Its an easy job except for getting the fluid amount correct. It has to be done at a certain temperature to get the level right which is pretty tricky.

Conor (batmanswilly) and I spent less than $200 between us at zebra today and walked away with; # full e46 black leather interior including door cards and electric seats - mint condition. # e46 electric fan # e46 'purple tag' steering rack. # e36 aftermarket front gas struts (ultimo brand) in brand new condition. We got totally smashed by the weather but it was well worth it for the awesome deal we got.

Hey Glenn, what do you think of the 'mann' and 'mahle' oil filters? They are meant to be the best according to the internets. I use ryco but I'm looking at switching if there is a better alternative.
