Dont drive it tomorrow until you know the fault. These engines don't like being overheated so don't risk it.

Craig - rather than throw parts and money at the problem, you are better to take it to Glenn for a proper diagnosis.

If it was head gasket you would most likely be using water. It sounds like you are holding water fine. As someone else suggested it could be water pump not pumping the water through the system properly. Water pumps with the plastic impeller are a weak point on this engine. If you are local I can loan you a working second hand water pump to see if that fixes the problem. If it is then a new waterpump with the stronger metal impellor is only $30 Euro from Schmiedmann.

It also has the dreaded N46 motor.

Looking for an e46 electric fan. Not the auxiliary one, but the one that sits between the motor and the radiator. Cheap.

What is your budget, and I presume you are looking for an e46?

Just use the hammer method. Big adjustable spanner on the fan nut, and then sharpley hit the end with a hammer. Just make sure to hit the nut clockwise as it is reverse threaded.

Also running at the beginning of the day when its cooler probably helped too.

M50 or m52 motor? The m50 was iron block

Did the fan delete mod on Babara today. I cant believe how good the difference is, and for so little money. I will get another electric fan and do the same to my other car.
