What model for? That is a very reasonable price when you accept cutting plus blank costs around $95NZD alone.
  2. Thanks. Now I get it. ? This shouldn't apply at all to the e60/e90 crowd all of whom can get USB cables with obd2 connectors. Of the commenters here, it's only YoungTrashDriver who might need that if his e39s are older than 2001.
  3. Thank you! Is it th fat round connector that lives in th engine Bay? My e39 is a 2001 and everything works just fine over obd2 never had to research older. Edit: the history of obd is quite interesting. It became required in the US from '96 but uptake and standardisation varied worldwide until around 2002ish.
  4. What functionality does ADS provide that PA Soft/INPA/NCS Expert do not provide? Clarification. I double checked. My VM is actually Windows 7 x86_64 and it's on KVM, not VirtualBox. I would be happy to make a virt using whatever software is most common and share setup instructions to get stuff working though.
  5. Erm, what am I missing here? My cable is OBD2 to USB and I use PS Soft and INPA and NCSExpert on my dull-ish new-ish laptop. What is it I am losing by not using a 32-bit OS? (I use Win10x86_64 on that laptop and my VM is Windows 8.1 x86_64) You don't need an old laptop at all... Why oh why are you using serial ports in 2017? EDIT:If you truly must use something that has a serial port, at least get a rs232<>USB converter and bring yourself into this century.
  6. I never said anything about shitty, or old in my laptop description. I have my previous gen Carbon X1 dedicated to software now. Previously I was using my current laptop, which itself runs Fedora and had a virt for the software. That setup works perfectly btw, no reason you can't use the same under OSX. I was using virtualbox. I find VMWare for local virts overkill. This is not correct. The general readers of which you speak can do just find for reading codes and such, but to actually code the car, pins need to be soldered differently than the standard OBDII interface calls for. Now, there is no reason why someone can't do that to a bluetooth enabled dongle, but I haven't found one yet that does this. Plus, you'd also then have to code the software itself for the new interface, unless there is already a shim of somekind... anyway, too much effort. That's basically what I have too. Works fine with PA Soft 1.4 Use Virtualbox, I can even share my VM if you'd like. I have all the key coding software in mine as well. https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=561237 That is the thread for you. I believe the same interface cable we're discussing here will work for your e60, depends on model year it seems.
  7. Does not everyone have a laptop dedicated to their car? Although I do wish the dongle was wireless. Bluetooth would have been swell. What kinds of problems do you mean, btw?
  8. The thing you want is PA Soft. BMW Scanner, Etc... Something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cheap-OBD2-Auto-Code-Reader-OBDII-Diagnostic-Scanner-V1-4-for-BMW-Unlock-Version-/172517822821 I paid ~$25 for mine. I am not endorsing that one, I can't find the link to mine any more, but it sure looks like that one. It can run under windows 7/8/10 etc...

Grief grief grief show the wheel that're for sale grief grief grief This is lovely, and so way out of what my budget would be.
  10. "Mum, why is that weird-looking person taking photos of our car?!"
  11. The PPI is always worth at least its own value. Even the nicest of cars will have something wrong which will have been unforeseen by you, or the seller (this is giving everyone involved the benefit of doubt here...) which a PPI might well pick up. Speak with Glenn, or one of the other garages in town that specialize on BMWs and they'll set you right. I found this old post useful when I was in your position:
  12. This came up in r/BMW a few times. Their business has had a major overhaul in the last few years, where they are top notch now with regards to service specially.
  13. Major reason I'd use fcpeuro in the US is their lifetime warranty even on consumables. Like you can send them used oil you bought from them and they'll send you new oil! Wipers, ATF, filters, etc... I still get non-liquids from them, because liquids would be unfeasible from NZ.
  14. The most inaccurate thing in that video is the lack of queues everywhere
  15. This can be true, or not. Lots of variables, like what state you're in and whether or not you're a citizen. Since going full xenophobe as a nation, the US is quite a bit more obnoxious for non-citizens when it comes to bureaucracy. Why ecstuning versus fcpeuro? Oh how I miss American convenience (even if I miss near nothing else...) Free shipping, and meaningful warranties/returns policies. Ah, to have Amazon Prime again...
  16. I didn't start listening to music in English (That I could understand, at any rate...) until ~1990.
  17. Good on you mate! Was it someone from this forum? Step forward!
  18. I'm from the previous decade to you and these folks have me feeling young too.
  19. I had the same concern and replaced mine with ones that cost $30ish on ebay. I will note I don't actually use mine for their intended purpose and them $30 was simply to close the unsightly gap the broken ones left behind.

    Quick rant thread.

Facebook wins out simply because of exposure. So many people use that and for so many purposes, one FB post gets you thousands of views, as compared to an enthusiast site like this, where you might get hundreds. Forum software, the good ones, tend to be maintained quite well. What happens is forum admins tend to not update their forums very often, which is actually a big problem in software security circles. Wordpress is a classic. People run old Wordpress versions, have their website broken into, queue tears.
  21. Dunno, I tend to think of skylight/sunroofs as "That thing that will either break, or leak, or both."
  22. That could only be better if it was pretty-blue.
  23. Spend enough time there and you'll start think like the rest of us Americans. Beware the abyss!
  24. I watched a video on youtube about this very issue recently. Does that look like your issue?
