A bit more on the e21 saga.... changed the alternator reg so it charges now, tested the thermo fan/ switch, pulled out the rear seat and cleaned it, realised one of the previous asshats who has worked on this car put the rear seatbelts in ass about face, left on the right side and right on the left side so they didnt retract properly! There is a locating pin on the mechanism to prevent this exact thing, but they still managed it! Sorted that mess out, new HT leads, new rubber seals on bonnet and firewall. Its moving slowly closer to beoing roadworthy.

One step forward, many steps back on the touring2.0. Alarm decided it would just start going off for no reason all of a sudden. Unplugged bonnet sensor since it wasn't contacting properly as many others have done, battery was a bit flat so charged it, Still does it. So is currently sitting unlocked in my drive untill I sort it.

Finally got it back last week, didn't like the non genuine cam sensor and vanos didn't have enough movment. I thought I had the sprocket wound all the way round since the vanos unit came out but previous person hadn't done it properly last time and was gammied up so was hard to get it right round.

So I thought I'd be good and give it a full tank of gas and actually be able to drive it. Bad idea! Leaks like a sift out the top somewhere. Another thing to sort once it's nearly empty I guess.

Oh and still not running right, still well down on power. Feels like a vacuum leak, can hear a whistling noise as idle/low revs and stalls when stopped at lights some times, more so when ac is on. Which seems to be the only thing working great.

Oyea, now "check brake lights" keeps coming up every second day even though they're all fine, and I've checked and cleaned all contacts.

So think I fixed the fuel leak. Looked like the pump had been replaced and the hose that's on top was abit loose and the big plastic nut, so tightened them up. Cleaned up the fuel sitting the top and back together.

Also alarm issue I think is caused by a dud battery in the siren unit since it didn't have much voltage and had been leaking, so will get a couple more and see how that goes

Changed the transmission filter on the E46. Went reasonably smoothly. Now shifts with no issues.

Need to check the fluid levels tomorrow after it's all settled down.

I like the paintwork!

So, today, the 320d was washed and driven to Mt Wellington so I could have coffee and talk car stuff for a couple of hours.

The Merc 500SE - I investigated a graunching brake noise from the front o/s. Turns out that when the PO had some brake work done for the WoF, he was done too. The inside piston has seized solid in the caliper. I can rebuild, of course, but it'll most likely need new seals and possibly pistons which I can get, but they're 2-3 weeks away. :(

There were two manufacturers used for the calipers: ATE, and Bendix (Bosch). Everyone carries ATE parts, so guess which I have?

I can get a s/h caliper from the local Merc parts specialist, but even that is ~$250++, and I could buy a whole 500SEL parts car for that. I really don't have space for a SEL.

I've got a lovely pair of 4-pot ATE calipers that could suit, if the mounting holes lined up.

Sometimes you're a pigeon, sometimes you're a statue. Today I feel I have been both.

Thanks for the reminder. Will look up the parts diagrams now and find out where that vacuum line goes

Edit: found it. Missing He carbon canister so that vacuum line and the fuel vent line both vent to atmosphere in the engine bay...

Anyone have a carbon canister for sale?

Is it an NZ New one?

Dads unmolested 325i SE we just sold had no carbon cannister (or cat, or anything else emmisions related - not even an O2 cell).

My NZ new pfl 325i also has none of the above so I wouldn't be surprised if yours didn't have the carbon canister

It is NZ new, but it has the lines for one and the plug in the loom for the valve. The vacuum line is very poorly capped with tape and some fabric, and the fuel vent line is venting to atmosphere. Out of interest, do you know how they run the fuel tank vent without the Carbon canister/purge valve setup? Just venting to atmosphere somewhere near the back of the car?

Swore, cursed, hit thing with hammers, accidently broke a couple of things but managed to get the motor and gearbox in its place to figure out all the other bits and pieces

I don't know about the loom plug, but in the engine bay, there was just a rubber line, pointing nowhere. I think it came off a hard line further down the firewall. Somewhere down under the fusebox, just up above the chassis rail.

I know nothing more than that, sorry!

That's pretty much what mine has now, and then a very poorly blocked off vacuum line from the throttle body. I'm going to fit a CC anyway and we'll see if it makes a difference. Traced the fuel smell to a fairly large leak from one of the hoses on the fuel rail, a tighten of the hose clamp fixed that :D

Thank god LOL it was pretty bad kinda thought it was trying to kill me.

Still smells of gas. Not as bad definitely, so at least one leak fixed.
