hi guys/gals my names julian, just doing the intro thing, im not that new to bmw's but want to get to know /meet more bmw fanatics and try and find the right places to get parts/work done locally etc, the people you recommend and trust! and at a fair price(probably asking to much lol) i have a early 1973 2002 tii that is in need of a bit of tidying up, i could give you a list longer than my hallway as im sure most fanatics would but simply i want this car on the road for next summer........because it needs to be driven! so new clutch, a bunch of gaskets and rubber mounts, some minor rust and paint , potential engine-gear box strip down/check because they are out of the car and that should do for a while...... not! give us a yell if you can point me in the right direction or have any info etc, cheers

I've got two MK4's - one is a 2.8 manual, the other 2L auto. The manual is brilliant, the Auto slips rarely, so probably another 2-3 years.

Painted the engine bay, went a bit HAM with the grinder and cut a whole lot of crap out while I was there. Not bad for a lazy hungover Sunday. Also got block Pistons etc back from engine shop, just waiting on bearings and rings to turn up so I can assemble the block.

Not saying theres anything wrong with it but if you are going to do it, why not do it properly and save yourself a possible insurance nightmare later on?

I just picked up a new car worth more than yours today, so its certainly not me "scraping together pennies". There is a difference between a good car and a liability. If the inspection reports are to be believed, your car is the latter. I wish the new owner the best of luck, and i hope he comes on here so we can help him get the car back to the standard it deserves, with the owner that it deserves. When I was sorting through lists, I found some surprising differences, but these were often subtly different rims. BBS are a particular example. Chrome, anodizing, painting - the difference for a 17x8 rim was quoted as up to 2lbs, despite the rim being of apparently identical structure. I used to run 17x8 and 17x10.5 Oz Futuras on a Porsche 928. When I rebuilt the rims, I used new titanium bolts to replace the steels used originally. Aluminium is lighter still, but has less corrosion resistance, an important consideration on UK roads. The bolts weighed just under half as much. Opting for a polished rather than painted finish saved more weight - end result was something over 2lbs per rim. This is academic. The tyre choice makes a significant difference.

I don't think I'd ever purchase an auto .. even dual clutch whatever. Just like clutches.

Someone is going to pick up a good deal. Hopefully someone from on here. Our BMW family of motors look deceptively the same within reason, which is great for us motor swappers! Even if you told most mechanics that you have increased the capacity from X to X+ whatever, you can see that most of them wouldn't even be bothered doing the maths if it took longer than 4 seconds to work it out. So that's 800cc odd added to 2000cc and 800 divided by...she be right mate! No one has look at or even questioned my 3000 to 4000. Why would you?

^^^^^^ That is different trim to what he is talking of Allan. Having to buy the whole trim is bullshit. I would also bet the trim comes without the clips too. Took me about 3 minutes to find the clips & part number of: 51471840960

What you can't see in the pictures above is the horrible condition on the black trim that runs across the top of the windows from the A pillar right back to the C pillar. Mine looked like: So a bit of this: And this: And I got this: Much better: I'm delighted with the results and although the texture is a different to OEM you wouldn't know unless you knew. It looks so much better than it did that I'm happy even if it's not perfect. I used Dupli-Color "Custom Wrap" which seems to be the same sort of thing as Plasti-Dip. I'm not sure how long it will last but I used about 3/4 of a $28 can to coat each side 7 times. Application was easy, my second side (driver's) turned out better than the first but even so the first side isn't worth redoing, the imperfections are tiny. It really looks a million bucks - that trim in poor condition is in a place that you simply can't "unsee".
